Cowboys face decisions on DTs this week

November, 11, 2014

LONDON -- The Dallas Cowboys will have decisions to make on two defensive tackles this week.

Josh Brent's 10-game suspension came to an end on Sunday. He has been able to practice the last two weeks after the NFL revised his penalty for his involvement in the accident that cost the life of teammate and friend Jerry Brown in 2012.

While he was able to practice in London he was not able to be with the team on the sideline during the game.

Amobi Okoye's three-week practice window comes to a close as well. He is on the reserve non-football illness list as he comes back from anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, a brain disorder that had Okoye in a coma for parts of last year.

The Cowboys will have to activate Okoye to 53-man roster or keep him on NFI for the rest of the season. The Cowboys signed Okoye to a two-year deal in the offseason knowing he might not be able to play this season. It is likely the Cowboys will keep Okoye on NFI and give him a full offseason program and spring and training camp in order to be at his best in terms of football shape.

The Cowboys can delay a roster decision on Brent by asking for a two-week roster exemption. If they get the exemption, then Brent's first game could come on Thanksgiving against thePhiladelphia Eagles.

I wonder if that means DL Davon Coleman will be cut and hopefully added to the PS if he clears.

also, Garrett was glowing in his assessment of Jack Crawford (who was seeing some action at DT).

Good. Waiting for the weak link of the DT position to be cut.

Well, I guess we'll see if you're right. My guess is you are.

I expect Coleman to get cut and not Hayden though but it could be Hayden assuming you meant that. If they add Okoye then I expect Hayden to be cut although I suppose it could be another player.

Garrett also said Brent was too heavy right now.

I wouldn't shed a tear if Hayden was to get cut but I alawys wonder why people are so quick to get rid of him. So he'll go from starting to being cut? Aren't there guys lower than him on the depth chart?

And what's up with Jakar Hamilton? Why can't he get on the field? Is he hurt?

Look at some of the best defensive tackles in the league. I'm not sure what "too heavy" is. Some of these guys are major lard_________.

He should be game ready for 25 snaps pretty quickly.

Can they request the two week roster exemption at this point or is that possibility gone already?

Its going to take some time for him to get ready, but once he is Brent will help a lot by tying up two players in the middle.

Hayden gets all the hate but keeps on ticking. For some reason, the coaches like what he does.

Hamilton would most likely get scooped up by many teams. Many teams are depleted in the secondary. And we just lost Patmon for 3-4 weeks.

I'm guessing whoever we cut will be going to another team.

I had assumed most of the season that Jack Crawford would be the next to go, but I don't think that's the case anymore. McClain and Hayden have the least long term upside it would seem, but how realistic is to cut those guys over Coleman or Crawford? I would think McClain more likely, as the coaches seem to love Hayden, but Coleman hasn't played in awhile so it looks like him.

EDIT: or Dobbins. Leaves us a little light at linebacker, but keeps the better players on the roster I think.

My guess: they'll say goodbye to Lavar Edwards for the 39th time this season.

Edit: Never mind, just saw that Tim Dobbins is the cut.

Hayden likely won't be cut. They like him much more than most here. But I could see it happening. I like Hamilton but I don't know if he is injured. Ask @WoodysGirl. She gets all the tweets and if anyone knows she will. Sometimes I will tweet Bryan and ask him. Generally he answers but not always.

Hayden fills a role and he does it good enough to last the season at least. The guy is always hustling to my eyes at least.

apparently, even before the cut, Dobbins wasn't even on the depth chart, so that should have been a sign I guess.

I guess depth charts aren't always entirely accurate either. According to DC.COM, Josh Brent is two years old.
