OXNARD, Calif. -- To say Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli were disappointed with the unit during the goal-line work on Saturday would be a massive understatement.

The first- and second-team offenses scored on seven of eight goal-line snaps.

"Not good enough," Marinelli said. "Nothing to say. Just, the film shows it. You saw it. Not good enough."

With the Cowboys holding out starting running back Joseph Randle from the live action, undrafted rookie Gus Johnson scored three touchdowns. On the second score, tight ends Jason Witten and James Hanna collapsed the defensive line and left guard Ronald Leary and fullback Tyler Clutts took care of safeties Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox. On the last touchdown, Johnson loaded up on Wilcox at the goal line.

I truly hope this is a sign of how dominating our offense will be this year, and consequently will make our defense that much better going against that level of competition day in and day out. Can't wait to see this team go against someone lese to get a real feel for how good or bad this defense will really be this season.

Is this more of an indictment of a defense, or is our offensive line just that good?

I'll lean more with the offensive line.

Pssshhhhh yeah right. We have the best oline in the league and they're going to be even better this year. It only makes sense for our d line to struggle. Our defense will be blatantly better watch

That is why I can't wait for the preseason games to begin. the only way we can tell what we really have is when we start hitting people not on our team.

I do think we have one of the best OLs in the league. And they are young, so the sky is the limit.

It doesn't change the fact that , for the most part, we have an unproven D.

Just about every team, can point to some FA pick ups, and their draft, and say, we will be better this year!! By that logic Phillys Offense is going to be off the charts. But our additions will be better then their additions? Right?

Hardy will be gone for 4. McClain, gone for 4. Byron, Gregory, are rookies. DLAW, had some good games, but still looked raw, we picked up White from NO and some middle tier LBs................................okay.

We are weak up the middle. We lost some decent performing LBs......Can Lee hold up?

I love the enthusiasm and all, and I love the direction, I am excited about the direction the Cowboys are headed......but are we there yet? Can this D be good enough to take over games? Can it stop Rodgers, when the offense slips up on that important drive?

Im not sure we are there yet. They will need to be more then "Just fine" if we have any plans on getting Witten and Romo a ring this year.

Exactly I look at it this way let's say our offensive line is a 10, and our defensive line is an 8. Of course our oline will win majority of those battles. But when we are playing other teams whose offensive lines are only 7 or 8 that's when we'll see this defense shine.

Last year on defensive line we had a broken down Spencer, scrub Selvie, Hayden, 1st year playing position Crawford, recovering from acl Melton, and Mincey. At linebacker we had iffy Bruce Carter, Justin Durant and McClain. Our defense is light years better than that trash this year even including the 4 games suspension to McClain and Hardy.
Mincey, Hayden, Spencer, 1st year Crawford < Mincey, Lawrence/Gregory, 2nd year Crawford, Hayden (first four games until hardy) It will be night and day watching 2014 defense to 2015 defense

Yes, the D should be better, But I don't see this vast improvement to a point the Defense will be all that much more effective then last year....Improved? Maybe. If all things go as projected.

Dominating? I doubt it.

I tend to be more critical as I get older. Year after year after year, were always going to be better because of this and that , etc etc....most of the time, its not as drastic as projected.

I am hoping for the Defense to come together later on in the season.....maybe find their identity. But it might be rough , the first part of the season. Just how I see it...,,,??

We'll just have to see. All I see is a bright future ahead for our defense and if you look at the moving parts and who replaced who from 2014 I see no way that the defense isn't a whole new animal this year

Your comparing the best oline in pro football to how our defense stops a goal line situation. Plus we added Hardy, Jones, Gregory, etc. I think your assessment of the D is too premature.

Also I was assured here that the only way we could succeed in short yardage situations was if we signed Murray, traded for a vet or drafted a rookie.

What happened to that?
