They would be doing something if one of these players is signed.

I think working out several qualifies as doing. They already have 5 on their current roster. If they were truly happy with them, there would be 'no room at the inn' for any other running backs.

But, just like all of their pre-draft visits, they're looking at plenty of running backs.

Too much smoke for there to be no fire.

They could just be bringing in Felix to use as some sort of measuring stick or something. He came out of the same draft as dmc and probably got lots of data on him from his time spent here. They can see how badly he deteriorated and go off his current numbers from a workout. I hope he isn't a serious candidate. Such a waste of a 1st rounder.

So why are some, seems like most fans fixated on them working out RB's. And what it means. A WR was brought in too. Aren't people up I arms that Dez may be in trouble here too.....lol....
I was was going to post this earlier, but didn't. But after reading an article I did.

Mickey Spagnola wrote his column about this, it's a good read.
I know it's not popular to like Mickey on here, it seems one needs to hate Mickey to part of the "in" poster crowd....lol...but he usually keeps a level head and makes a lot of sense a good part of the time.

There is talent at the WR position. That is not the case with the RBs.

Working out RB's does not tell me anything close to they aren't comfortable with the RB's they have. They are looking to improve competition. People read way too much into everything this team does or does not do. Why can't they just be looking to improve the 90 man roster at this point.

To me it tells me that everyone's pet cat Syngin Days is not the answer to push for the 5th RB position for TC. So the top 4 don't get tired legs in the off season.

They'll carry more than 5 RBs in TC

Their actions don't reflect their words. Every decent RB prospect was brought in for predraft visits, but the draft didn't offer the opportunities to draft one. I think they had hoped the RB position would be undervalued and one of the better RBs would be available. They was so sure of this happening that they let Murray walk. I have read repeated quotes that they are comfortable with the RBs on the roster, but they are constantly looking for ways to upgrade the position. There is even trade talk and I think everybody has grown tired of the AP situation. It looks like they gambled and it didn't pay off. There has to be a touch of desparation in the air when they are working out Felix Jones. I would call that very desperate.

I totally agree that the risk they took by not signing Murray does not look like it is paying off.

Agreed...............rumors are we were going to draft a RB in the 2nd round, but we never expected Gregory to still be sitting there and we couldn't pass him up.

Once our pick in the 3rd came up, the RB board was already picked clean of guys we were interested in as every down backs.

Regardless, bringing in Felix Jones for a workout is very disturbing...............we saw this movie before and it did not end well, not really looking for a sequel.

Their last offer to Murray was $6 million a season and he signed for $8 million a season in Philly. I still don't get why we could not have offered maybe $1 million more and kept Murray. Surely he would have stayed if we offered $7 and Philly offered $8.

We obviously valued him at $6 million, so losing our bell cow for just a couple of million more really hurts. And I don't think it would have taken the full $8 million to get him to say, $7 million probably would have done it.

Instead we sign McFadden for a bag of chips and call it a day..................that is our only move we have made to date to replace Murray, everybody else was on the roster sitting on the bench last year watching Murray, including the underwear thief and the practice squad guy.

Now if they start signing somebody, then there could be something to some of our suspicions. I would be mildly surprised if we immediately sign any of these backs or receivers in advance of camp.
Where is Phillip Tanner?

too early to panic, it looks to me like kicking the tires is just to get camp bodies and if someone shines, then they grab a roster spot...Tate was good in a rotation so why not take a look...

...people won't be satisfied in here until AP wears the star, and I just don't see that happening...murray went for the cash, and rightfully so IMO...I think if McFadden can stay on the field, then he gets 15 to 20 carries a game and behind this line, his apc goes to around 4.5 to 5....too early to panic

People will be satisfied when a quality, dependable RB is on the roster.nit doesn't have to be AP. any RB that offers improvement over the current RBs will do.

Spagnola is a laughable company man but more often than not, he is a fairly decent barometer of what the front office is thinking.

Speaking of kicking tires, that is exactly what the Cowboys were doing this week when working out a combination of nine running backs and wide receivers at The Ranch on Thursday. Doing their homework in case. My goodness folks, just because the Cowboys worked out running back Ben Tate, that didn’t mean they were giving up on Darren McFadden or Joe Randle or Lance Dunbar or Ryan Williams. They were just examining the field in case one of those guys should get hurt between now and the Sept. 13 season opener. Real possibility, right? Settle down. In fact, Tate’s surgically repaired knee from his 2011 rookie season would not suggest long-term confidence. And it’s not as if the Cowboys are trying to turn back the clock on Felix Jones. It’s a look-see. Some at The Ranch have a world of confidence in McFadden and Randle, and let me remind you the reason the Cowboys paid Williams a $240,000 signing bonus on his two-year deal had to do with like at least five teams near the end of last season were trying to sign him off the practice squad. My goodness, OTA practices don’t begin until Tuesday, so would be a little premature to think the Cowboys already are throwing in the towel on the running back position. Plus, has anyone considered that Tate still is a free agent . . . .

He just had to throw in the "why is he still available".

From the Jon Machota chat yesterday.....
  • are these workouts for the cowboys normal for the time of the year...or are they desperation moves to find someone to replace D Murray?

They work out guys all of the time. But it's obviously a little more significant when it's at a position like running back. I wouldn't call it desperation, I'd say it's more like leaving no stone unturned.

This has Will Mcclay written all over it IMO. He might be the best pro personnel man in the business right now. There just turning stones, and making sure. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they are just taking looksies now for during the season we have any injuries.

On another note, No I do not want Felix back, but he would instantly be our best blocking back on our roster.

Might as well shake the trees and see what falls out.

But it bothers me a bit that after telling us how we were set at TB and didnt need Murray or drafting a kid, we are shaking the RB tree quite extensively. That tells me that they in fact, aren't feeling good about their RB situation.

Murray was too expensive for what he offered. He cannot stay healthy unless it is a contract year. Proved this in college and last year.

The draft played out to a combination of our needs and BPA. Chaz Green was the best player available that fit our needs after losing Parnell. It would have been different had we known for certain that Collins was going to fall to us, but we didn't. SO.... now that we have a surplus at the OL position perhaps we trade Leary for something or we shake the free agent wire a little for, perhaps, a ST return guy.... You do know that Felix Jones returned his first ever kickoff return for a touchdown with the Cowboys don't you? You do know we lost Dwayne Harris don't you?
