Well this is what I always tell people when they say variations of "the 90s dynasty is all because of one lucky trade (Walker)." We didnt get exactly what people contend we got. For example we got part of Emmit Smith, not all of him, with a Viking pick, as we parlayed that with some of our own to move up to get Smith. So, yes it isnt always as simple or as lopsided as people say. But then again, what are we gonna do, verbalize or display charts every time you make a point?

You also have to look at the aspect of not drafting Quinn helped Dallas keep Romo. If Dallas drafts Quinn, then that could have greatly changed the contract negotiations between Romo and Dallas. Maybe Romo would have felt slighted by the Cowboys drafting his possible replacement before he even played a full season and having to pay Quinn a good chunk of change even for a last 1st rounder. Perhaps drafting Quinn in 2007 makes Romo not sign a long term deal in the middle of the 2007 season. Where would Dallas be then?

The move worked out for Dallas no matter which possible draft picks get associated with it.

That will not placate the pissed off fans here. The only thing that will is if Williams starts being a factor.

I agree.

We had Quinn rated top 10? Jerry sucks

It's the Notre Dame curve. Playing for Notre Dame automatically bumps up a QB five rounds higher than he should be.

this was a well executed trade. i was extremely excited when we first pulled it off. i was a little dissapointed the browns didnt suck as much as i expected the following year to give us an even higher pick but we still made well off

Currently one of Jerry's oil companies is being associated with fraud. Sounds like trading that 1st rounder wasn't the only steal orchestrated.

Look at Jimmy Clausen and Sam Bradford, both of those guys are a current top 10 pick on draft boards right now and they haven't even played one NFL snap yet. For all we know these guys can be the next Quinn's...

If any of you recall JFE went ballistic on the trade. Her position was this.

The Dallas Cowboys graded Quinn out to be higher than their draft pick. When he fell they traded him away for the two picks mentioned in the anchor article.

JFE stated that if Dallas graded Quinn out to be of more value than where they would have selected him, it was a fool's errand to pass on him no matter what.

She wrote article after article on this subject skewering Owner Jones for his misstep in not drafting Quinn.

One has to wonder if she will relive her position in an article coming soon and rethink her insistence on choosing Quinn over Spencer and Jones?

Normally I don't hold much stock in what a journalist says since we have moved from a time when people did news reporting to a time when people do editorials and call it journalism. Frankly what we have in news papers, TV and the internet is sports blogs with the by line the clue on what's to come. A four minute article about I, Me and Mine where the writer is the star and the jocks are a by-product.

But I exchanged quite a few emails with Jen-Jen back in the day when this and other things got her goat and she genuflected in news print and band width about mistakes the Cowboys were making. No amount of discourse could sway her from her duty to tell it like it should have been in her mind.

While I truly don't expect it, it would be nice if she were a stand-up guy about this.

I won't hold my breath.

And how exactly are you going to be a current top 10 pick on a teams draft board if you have played an NFL snap already?

I think he is saying you wouldn't be on a draft board if you've already taken a snap. I think.

I may be splitting hairs, but with all of us in draft mode, I think we can all see the value of draft picks....we actually gave up a 2nd, a 3rd, and 5th to get Spencer.

If you look what Cleveland got out this, it looks very lobsided, but overall, here is actually what we gave up:

We received
2007 pick 26--Spencer
2008 pick 22--F Jones

We gave up
2007 pick 22 (maybe Spencer, Jon Beason, or B merriweather)
2007 pick 36 (maybe Lamarr Woodley or Sidney Rice)
2007 pick 87 (maybe Zac deOssie, Steve Breaston, or LeRon Mclain)
2007 pick 159 (maybe Pierre Thomas or Bret Celek)

Come up with 2 others because this guys wouldn't have been picked in 2007. I also have my doubts about LeRon McClain being selected.

As far as 2007, if we had kept the pick, we wouldn't have selected Spencer. Hitzgues reported on the air during the draft ( after the trade ) that the Cowboys were going to select Dwayne Bowe if the Browns didn't accept the deal.

Like I said, just splitting hairs and showing it was not as simplistic as the article made it out to be. We did not simply get Spencer and F Jones for Quinn as it said. That was not true.

I also said that things could have unfolded differently IF we used our trade up picks and drafted differently.
In that case, we still killed Cleveland in the original deal, but then maybe erased some of the gains when we traded back up--just based on opportunity coast only.

In that case (in the perfect world) we got Felix for 3 players who could have been (if we drafted ideally) LaMarr Woodley, Steve Breaston, Pierre Thomas. The point was to show opportunity cost and the value of draft picks, not to criticize our trade at all.

In the end we did great with what we got.

My hindsight drafts are always 100% perfect!

Apparantly, so are others from some folk. Too bad it doesn't mean much.
