ESPN Dallas: Dom Capers is high on Jason Garrett

I suspect this will be the most physical camp any of these guys will have ever seen.

well, most of them played for parcells for a number of years so I dont know that it will be any more physical than that. You can not get carried away with it in this era.

Moose said the other day that he thinks the team should go to austin again and have camp outside in the elements and just make the team learn to deal with it, it will help them in the long run. He basically said being inside on the turf is not doing them any good.

wow.

This gets tossed around all the time. Laufenberg said he had the same qualities as walsh. He played for walsh. Laufenberg has been right about alot of things and knows this organization imo better than any other media member.

To see this get shot down all the time like some sort of crazy statement is really annoying.

I would love to hear the people who like to use this the way you do try and debate this with laufenberg. Would be alot of fun to watch.

Pretty sad that not only the media in this city but the fans of this team basically do this with everything when they have an agenda against a person.

by the way after the pm the other day, your dislike of garrett now makes sense to me, fwiw.

I understand the context of how the comparison was made, but I've heard names like Walsh and Lombardi thrown around on here on more than one occassion.

And debating with Babe about Jason Garrett would be like debating with Charlie Sheen about partying. He's been a Garrett supporter since the word go.

The point I'm making is, if he is such a wonderful, structured, disciplinarian - why did he just sit back and watch Wade run this team into the ground?

The company line is, 'he didn't want to step on any toes.' But I don't buy that, Wade doesn't seem like the kinda guy that would be difficult to communicate with, or someone not open to new ideas. Great coaches make an impact, whether they're an assistant or not - Garrett as a coordinator didn't make much of an impact. Garrett as the coach of a 1-7 team with no expectations, made an impact.

I'm curious to see how the players embrace his philosophies, they've played well initially for 3 different coaches now - Tuna, Wade, and RJ. The problem has been getting them to buy into their approach and start picking up what they're putting down. That's the question.

And in terms of the pm, it's not just those guys. He isn't a guy that everyone loves, he's a guy that Jerry loves and that's all that matters. And besides, I'd rather our players not like a coach because that means he's making them do things they don't want to do.

I think Garrett earned the job, and I don't hate him - I just think this organization has severely overrated it's talent, and Garrett's success is going to make Jerry enter the offseason more complacent because of his belief in Garrett's influence. And I also don't appreciate how he and Jerry went about the Sherman 'firing'. It also doesn't help when I come to my favorite message board and seeing people post like we're coming off back to back super bowls and this team is 'saved' because of RJ. No pun intended.

so your saying those guys do dislike him and they told you more do also? If so that means we are on the right track.

and I understand what you are saying, but he was an assitant coach, not the head coach.

and just for reference. Howcome The Bengals didnt win anything when Walsh was an assistant under Paul brown for 8 Seasons? Then they even let him go and hired line coach bill johnson over walsh who ended up flaming out.

Your theory would assume that walsh told paul brown what to do and how to run the team. If walsh was any good why did he sit back and not make changes while the team lost playoff games?

it just doesnt work like that, the assitants cant be telling the head coach how to run things. In fact it works the opposite way, go watch those great nfl films pieces on parcells-bellichick with the jets. Bellichick trying to offer advice and tell parcells what to do during games and parcells having a coronary and yelling back at him this is why you wont get another job!!

I mean, look at the 85 bears. Buddy was trying to do this to ditka and they hated each other.

and just for the record I have never declared anything about garrett. I just happen to like the guy and believe he does things the right way and it goes all the way back to the days when he was here and some things he would say. I really believe he is going to be a good head coach.

and I am an adult and feel like I can make that statement without it being twisted into someone saying I am declaring him lomabardi or landry or whatever. I have no idea if we will win or not, but I like the approach he has and I think the offense has been pretty good since he showed up.

the offense here gets scrutinized for everything, that is where the fans of this organizations heads are at. Every city is different and this one happens to be an offensive minded city and fanbase. So the intense scrutiny is there.

oh and also for the record I have never heard anyone but babe and hudson houck compare him to past coaches. Babe to walsh and hudson to john robinson.

Do you understand leadership or how it works? TO be a good leader, you need to be a good follower first. You cannot expect someone to follow you, when you are undermining your leader.

I mean seriously some of you who question why Garrett didn't upsurp his boss ever worked in a real working environment? How would you respect your boss or follow your boss when he wont listen or follow his boss? HC sets the rules and standards. Assistant coaches are supposed to follow it. Coaching faternity is pretty small, if Garrett ever did that, he probably wouldn't get many coaching jobs or HC offers either. He would be deemed trouble maker.

If anything, as Wade's boss, Jerry was the ultimate culprit. He deserves the blame and took the blame too. So its really silly to keep saying Garrett is problem for lack of discipline or physical TC etc.

You can only Blame Garrett from here on if there is still lack of descipline or team continues to underachieve, because its his show now. Especially since he has shown in short order how quickly he can achieve results.

To be fair, the guy was the Assistant Head Coach, was hired BEFORE Wade and was undoubtedly the guy-in-waiting.

I don't think anyone ever doubted any of those points. He isn't some no-name who was brought along for the ride. I don't think a single person in the organization ever thought that Red wouldn't at least get a shot.

And it's not like anyone is saying he should have crept into Wade's bedroom during the night and smothered him with a pillow.

Expecting Garrett to have control over his side of the ball and exert himself isn't too much to ask or expect.

But, it really does look like he played the role and just waited for his time to come.

After all I stated you are back to square one on this? You are again going back to my point about not being a good follower. YOu don't gain respect by doing contrary to what your boss says. There were reports, Garrett wanted more physical camp or practices and Wade/Jerry didn't allow.

How much of it is true or not, I am not sure either. But it fits Garrett personality from what I have seen in his tenure as HC.

Now as far as control over his side, it clearly seems like his side of the ball didn't lay down like Wade's side did. I think that pretty much sums it up fo me. Besides, still not sure what the beef is, when the proof is there in the last 8 games on how the team played and results he got without arguably his best weapons ( I still think Romo is best Cowboys OFfensive weapon).

Now Garrett doesn't achieve from here on out, then everyone can agree that he is reponsible or at least mostly responsible, barring injuries I guess.

PS: Heck Tony Dungy had most of his staff in place before he was hired. So did that make him any less of an authority over the team?

Rob Ryan for HC somewhere next year and bring in Capers.

I know you are being playful, but I've got to say:
I've always been a huge fan of the Ryans with their defense, but they've been abysmal in understanding offensive football.

I like our combo of Garrett and Ryan.

Sure. That will likely happen at some point to someone. That's part of running a productive and fruitful camp.
At that point, the dummy that didn't stretch right to begin with will do so from then on, huh?..

When Pat Summerall was asked what current coach reminded him most of Lombardi he said Jason Garrett.

But as I learned a while ago you simply cannot make comparisions of any kind on this site and expect people to keep it in context of what was actually said. Some just refuse to do it.

Jason Garret is *no* Lombardi. Get real.

I maybe reaching here but I also think it is kind of strange that we had reports of stephen wanting to fire wade and hire garrett after 44-6 but jerry wouldnt.

then we get to the summer and all of a sudden the offensive players start using this term "the cowboys way" and the training camp was physical.

then they came out and ran the ball well and had a very good season.

then all of a sudden wade is fired last year and within days we start hearing "the cowboys way" out of the players mouths again and the pads are on at practice. All of a sudden we start winning.

I am not trying to connect the dots, but I am. Knowing what I know and from listening and watching jerry's reaction to winning It wouldnt shock me in the least to find out years from now that Jerry made sure we did it wades way with a soft camp and everyone happy hoping to not get anyone hurt.

I wouldnt be suprised, in fact jerry said it this past week that he thought we were just going to pick up where we leftoff and was trying to take it easy to stay healthy. Randy galloway on with babe a couple of weeks ago said he was told by staff members that jerry made the coaches completely back off after bryants injury at camp and that is why they never hit all summer.

Just saying, I know this will tick off alot of people but it kind of makes sense to me.

Hopefully we have a real hard training camp with a ton of competition.

To be fair to Wade, several players have gone on record saying his camps were harder than the Parcels camps and that the Camp Cupcake stuff was way overblown.

I don't doubt that Jerry got heavily involved after the Bryant injury and throttling back what the coaches were doing in the drills. I recall at the time how angry he was that Bryant hadn't stretched adequately. But it's not entirely fair to blame Wade just because everyone likes to dump on the fired coach for being a softy.

In any event, I do think Garrett will go to bat for a rigorous routine and for hitting during the week. That's all good.

As to the Garrett's influence as an OC side discussion. Haven't any of you ever worked for a boss who wasn't as competent as you are? Haven't you wondered yourself how much more you could do if your boss would let you call more of the shots, or if you had his job? I don't see why anyone would think it would be any different for Garrett. By all appearances, he was a good soldier, and when he got his chance, he capitalized on it. I don't see why that's hard to accept. The real challenge will come after a successful season when the owner/GM wants him to compromise on his principles in order to market the club or appease veterans or whatever. It won't come this offseason. Hopefully next.

Man, if Cowboys didn't land Rob Ryan, I would have forever cursed Wade Phillips for it. Still think if it was Dom Capers, he would have stuck with Cowboys for a long time, since he would not be a Hc candidate anymore, unlike Rob Ryan is going to be.

This, and we all see with Pittsburgh how advantageous it is to have LeBeau there so many years and not an effort to leave for higher pastors at all.

He's coached 8 games, nobody knows whats going to happen.

I'm on board with Jason Garrett. I think he is going to do a fine job coaching this team. I really like the way he has taken control.. I thinbk he has earned the players respect and am excited for the upcoming season.
