ESPN Dallas: Multi-stop training camps to be part of future

GRAPEVINE, Texas -- Because of the lockout the Cowboys will hold training camp – if there is one – only in San Antonio. As to the future, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the team could return to the multi-city camps.

The Cowboys split training camp between the Alamodome and Oxnard, Calif., last year and also played in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, leading many to wonder whether that contributed to the team’s 6-10 season.

“I liked the travel we had,” Jones said. “I think it was good and I think we will have that in the future.”

I agree it is not the where it is the work they put in that makes the difference.

I think it got overblown, after all we were on the west coast anyways for pre season games. Instead of the flight back to San Antonio they stayed on the west coast.

Jerry cares about Jerry.. not his players, not winning, not anything else. As long as he's around, im going to hate him.

He doesn't care about winning half as much as some Cowboys fans want to think he does.

Yes Training camp will be in San Antiono this year (if we have one) but Jason never said he was putting a stop pretaining to the locations. Just because people add their own twist does not make it so. I have heard Garrett talking about the kind of training camp he plans on running but nothing about saying where Camp will be held.

The best place to hold TC is Oxnard. There is slightly less chance of injuries training and playing on grass compared to artificial turf. There is likely no physiologic edge between training indoors vs in Oxnard. There is some degradation of effort training in excess heat and humidity with no real gain except accommodation to heat.

I would have no problem it they went back to Austin at St. Edwards. Jimmy Johnson had those teams ready and that was 100 degree afternoon practice. I will say where camp is located is not overly important the work they put in is

The lockout has forced the Cowboys' hand this year and the team's 2011 training camp -- if there is one -- is expected to be held exclusively in San Antonio . But owner Jerry Jones said he would consider reviving the multi-site preseason practice schedule that the team has organized in the past. "I liked the travel we had," Jones said. "I think it was good and I think we will have that in the future. We will do multiple camps in the future. I want to be real clear about something: Having training camp in different places is not a deterrent or not necessarily the solution to having a successful team." Last year, the Cowboys spent 36 days in July and August preparing for the season while shuttling between San Antonio, Irving and Oxnard, Calif. They then returned home to Valley Ranch, where the Cowboys spent 15 additional days readying themselves for the games that actually mattered. When Dallas later stumbled to a 1-7 record, a slide that was punctuated by a catastrophic 38-point defeat to Green Bay in November, some wondered if the Cowboys' preseason odyssey - one that seemed more conducive to marketing the franchise's brand than promoting a stable work environment -- had overextended and damaged the team. The format of the training camp certainly didn't seem to emphasize good practice habits -- at least not in the eyes of Fox analyst and former Dallas fullback Daryl Johnston. "It was ridiculous," Johnston said. "There was no opportunity to be prepared on Week 1 with that type of schedule." But Johnston, Jason Garrett's former teammate, seems to think that the Cowboys will not repeat the same mistakes of 2010 under their new head coach. "I was critical of the atmosphere last year in training camp," Johnston said. "I know that [Garrett]'s already committed to having a different type of environment. It's a fine line between preparing your team for the regular season, building the brand of your franchise and allowing fans access to the players. I know they're going to do it the right way this year." Beyond this season, however, the team's training camp could revert back to a format similar to the one used in 2010. "I read somewhere there is some thought in our mind of not having multiple training camps that is not correct," Jones said. "It is just the opposite."

Now, having said this, I also think that this is not a question for Jerry to answer. I think this is a question for the HC and his staff to answer. Jerry is effectively cutting Red off at the knees IMO. Shut the hell up and just handle what the GM is supposed to handle. Let your Head Coach make decisions on how best to coach the team. Unfortunately, I am nobody anybody is going to listen to so, you know........

As far as I know coaches do not determine the location of where teams hold camp. Once they hit the field the coach’s job is to get them ready.

Do you think this hasn't been discussed between Jason and Jerry? I think if Jason had a problem he could convince Jerry to change his mind.
