ESPN Dallas: Multi-stop training camps to be part of future

As far as I know coaches do not determine the location of where teams hold camp. Once they hit the field the coach’s job is to get them ready.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, as I recall Jimmy specifically wanting camp to be in a location where the conditions were very uncomfortable. He definitely had say on that. Doesn't matter, it will be Jerry's call but it shouldn't be.

The location for camp, the setting, the conditions, all of this is part of getting the players ready so I don't see how the Head Coach could not have say in this.

Do you think this hasn't been discussed between Jason and Jerry? I think if Jason had a problem he could convince Jerry to change his mind.

I don't think any of us know if there has been discussion or not. However, that doesn't change the fact that it should be, IMO, the Coaches call and not Jerry's.

What positive impact does it have?

I wouldn't go so far as to say it does. In actual fact, I'm not even sure how it makes Jerry any more money.

I guess exposure is the name of the game.

If the Cowboys have a spilt camp, that means that one day is used for travel.

How long is training camp? 3-4 weeks? Do they practice every day? I think not, I'm sure a few off days are scheduled in.
Why is it a problem if the whole team spends one of those days traveling to another city?

Can someone please explain to me why this is a problem. How it could in any way have a negative impact?

As I see it, the people who have a problem with this, simply have a problem with Jerry's existance. Anything the guy does while breathing is a problem for them.

This is silly. There are different opinions on how Training Camp should be run. It doesn't mean that if you believe that there should be as little distraction as possible in camp, you are somehow anti Jerry. That's just not realistic.

As far as I know no that was not the case if Jimmy was going to determine the location they would have been in south Florida. Many teams have held camps at the same location for years despite the fact they have gone through many coaches. Coaches job is get them ready

Before Johnson’s arrival, the Cowboys spent 27 years training at California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Johnson held camp there his first season (Aikman’s rookie year), but he and owner Jerry Jones moved the operation to Austin, Texas, in 1990. Jones wanted to move camp closer to the team’s regional fan base. Aikman says Johnson supported the move because he wanted his players to experience the Texas heat, a weather condition he considered ideal to train a football team.

With Red running things I have faith he will keep things in perspective. I'm not worried about it at all.

I would say focus on football only, stay consistent in the one camp without wondering when you move again, and on days off instead of traveling how about rehabbing instead? And, don't forget the cost of travel for an entire team from city to city. I mean, hey, save some money, Jerry, you know, times are hard, right?

It's a total disruption on the whole operation, IMO. Stay in one place, get focused on training camp, get acclimated to the conditions, get comfortable and get prepared for practice tomorrow.

It;s just marketing by Jerry because I see no other value in it.

What value in it do you see?

I don't think it is an issue, heck many teams will go work out with another team in training camp for a week. I recall the Raiders coming to Austin 2 different years to work out with the Cowboys. Players are not being asked to move equipment

I would have no problem it they went back to Austin at St. Edwards. Jimmy Johnson had those teams ready and that was 100 degree afternoon practice. I will say where camp is located is not overly important the work they put in is

The heat there is detrimental to the player's health. That's too much heat to be exercising in esp long term. The heat effect is cumulative. There is no physiologic gain to be had from it either. You don't get used to too much heat. It doesn't make you stronger. You can acclimate to heat up to a point. IOWs you can adjust your regulation to more external heat up to a point and over time. But exercising in too much heat only hurts the body.

No, I do not recall Jimmy ever saying South Florida for Cowboys Camp. I do recall Jimmy saying Thousand Oaks was too easy and deciding in his second season with the Cowboys to move training camp from Thousand Oaks to St. Edwards in Austin. At the time, I remember him saying in an interview, after a game, late in the 89 season that we were not in good enough condition. The next year, we moved and went from mild conditions to 90+ heat and full scrimmages every day. It was something that Jimmy stressed and we were a better team for it. No, you know I like you Dooms and I usaully agree with you but I don't agree on this one. I think it should be the Coaches decision. If the team craps out late in the season, it's the HC who takes the heat. A perfect example of that is Wade. I think the HC has to have the last word on how and under what conditions training camp is run. If you want to say that it doesn't matter where it is so long as the conditions the HC wants are meet, I'm OK with that but I think it's got to be the HCs decision and not the owner or the GM if you want the team to win. That's just my opinion on it.

Cool, then stay in one place and if the Vikings want to come play touch football, come on down.

Jimmy had it right. He stayed in one place that was hotter than hell to get his players ready, and look how that turned out?

IMO, it's just a freaking waste of valuable time for players having to compensate for different locations when the can use that valuable time to get out and play some serious football instead of being paraded around like a bunch of clowns.

What's the benefit of moving around here and there? Tell me.

Tell that to the troops in Iraq.
;)

I think that there is something to training in the heat and just enduring it and overcoming it as a team. When you get through things like that, I do believe that it draws you closer together. I do believe that and I have personally seen that. Now, I'm sure that the physical aspects of training in a more mild climate have their advantages as well. I guess I just believe in a more focused approach but more then that, I believe that the HC should make those decision and not the owner or GM. If you want to say it's going to be in Oxnard, OK, have it in Oxnard. Would not be what I would pick but OK. Just keep it in one place and limit the circus atmosphere is how I see it.

No it's not. Turning this non-issue into an issue is silly.

Jason Garrett will make camp what it is. End of story. Good, bad, hard, easy. Taking a single freaking day to change locations will have zero impact.

Distraction? What distraction?

Boo Hoo Hoo. "All Jerry cares about is marketing the team and making money. He hurts our chances to win."

For everone who thinks this I have a suggestion. Get a life.

So, Mr. Get A Life...tell me what the benefits are for moving camp here and there.

I'm not saying I see a value in it. There must be if Jerry's doing it because there is a cost to moving the team.

All this does is add one day to the length of camp. One stinking day to travel and so many are up in arms about it.

It's a non-factor!

Go find something real to complain about.

I don't know that there is and I don't care. If Jerry wants to have a split camp, I don't care because it will have zero impact on the camp itself.

You start camp July 22. You have camp for two weeks and everyone thinks about nothing but football.

Then on say Aug 7th. Everybody wakes up, packs and goes to the airport. You get to the next location and unpack. Do whatever you do for the rest of your off day and get to fricken sleep.

Then on Aug 8th you wake up and get back to work.

What the hell is complicated about that? How is that travel day on Aug7th going to distact guys on July 22nd? Or even on Aug 6th?
