Thursday is the first day NFL teams can place franchise tags on players before the Feb. 25 deadline and everyone's favorite wide receiver, Miles Austin, is a restricted free agent and highly coverted by the Cowboys.

But a source close to the situation said the Cowboys will not place the tag on Austin, at least not right now.

If the Cowboys place the franchise tag on Austin, it would have to pay him the average of the top five salaries at his position from the previous season. Austin's take home before taxes would be $9.5 million.

Austin's agent, David Dunn, did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said the organization would like to give Austin a long-term contract, probably five years, but if not Austin could get a first-and-third round tender offer. If that's the case, Austin's salary would be $3.168 million.

Any NFL team can match the contract, but it would have to give the Cowboys a first and third round pick.

I wouldn't even mess around with this. Get him locked up or at the very least franchised.

There would be a team willing to part with a 1st and 3rd for him.

He's already in Dallas, so no, there is no team that would give up a 1st and 3rd for a WR who has had 1 thousand yard receiving year in his career.

franchise him and let him show what he can do this year.
then, if he does great, sign him long term mid/late in the year

His agent is gonna demand 18 million per year though, considering he's twice as good and productive as Roy Williams. Jerry doesn't have much leverage in this deal.

What's it going to be then, eh?

It works two ways. If his agent wants that kind of deal, is a team going to give up a one and three AND that kind of money based off a 12 game performance (and several which skewed his numbers off the charts)?

This sounds to be a good enough risk for Jones. Then again, in an upcapped year I would not worry and just pay him. But it is not my money.

Really?

Didnt the jets almost give up a 2nd for him last offseason when he had about 20 career catches?

Lock him up. Nothing to gain by risking it. Too much to lose.

For a team to sign him they'd have to give up a 1st and a 3rd plus a ridiculous contract that Dallas can't or won't match. The odds of that happening are pretty slim.

31 other teams would do it.

The first and third tender gives Jerry more leverage in working out a long term deal. Using the franchise tag gives the leverage to Austin's agent.

Silly statement.

I'm sure St. Louis really would be willing to give up #1 overall for Austin. Rinse and repeat for any team drafting in the first 20-25 picks and all of a sudden your list is narrowed from 31 to 6. Now those teams picking 25-31 are there for a reason. They make smart moves and dont give away draft picks. Your 31 is narrowed down even more.

Think before you post.

I hope the Rams do.
I wouldn't trade Miles for the 1st pick in the draft. Who would we take? The bust in waiting in Suh? Even if he didnt bust we have an all pro DT. Suh would be a backup? Do we trade down and take Berry and someone in the early second round? Not worth an elite WR.

Its true, if Roy is worth 9 a season Miles is worth over 18m a season.

If only the financials were so simple. Player X is twice as good as player Z so he deserves twice as much money. Got it.
