IRVING, Texas -- Few things excite fans in training camp more than the play of an unsung quarterback fighting to make a team. In 2003 and ‘04, Tony Romo was that guy for the Dallas Cowboys. He was the unknown guy from Eastern Illinois who blossomed into a Pro Bowler and one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL after three years as a backup and even a backup to the backup. Matt Moore did it in 2007 for the Cowboys. Rudy Carpenter was that guy in 2009.

10/21 passing. So he's completing less than 50% of his passes and people want to crown this guy the next Matt Moore, lol.

Maybe he'll develop down the road. But that maybe is bigger than @DallasEast's underpants.

Completion Percentage is throw away stat, there are many reasons why a pass does not get completed so of it out of the QB's control. I know of at least 2 passes in SD that his receivers just flat out dropped the ball. People like what they have seen overall such as poise, pocket awareness, he looked better than the guy the ravens took in the 6th this year. No one is annointing him anything he has enough to warrant further development.

It stinks that teams can't afford to stash third QBs on rosters to develop. It'd be better for the league, overall, if everybody were able to. This bumping around from PS to PS doesn't help guys trying to get it down at the toughest position in sports. They really need to sit in a system for three years and see what they've got.

They need to just bump up the rosters, or make practice squads protected spots.

I would like to say game-day active rosters actually bumped to 53 and the 10 practice squad guys be kept untouchable and not have to clear waivers with maybe a max futures contract term of 3 years per guy. After 3 years you have to send him through waivers to re-claim him to the PS.

On the flip side it gives those QBs a chance to advance sooner with a team that needs them right away.

For sure, they make all these rule changes to tie the hands of the defense behind their backs...........but a simple move to help develop young prospective QBs that then adds to scoring would be too simple.........but you maybe have the owners not wanting the extra payroll either in a lot of cases, or you have the players union wanting the "shortage" to enhance dollars.

At the same time Hanie is 5/8 for 60 yards and a TD and nobody is remotely excited about him.

Reason being he has played in the league as a backup and a few snaps as starter so most probably feel he should be better by now vs Vaughan who is a guy from a smaller school and playing his first NFL snaps and some people think maybe there is something there.

Nothing wrong with being a little excited about him esp with the idea of having a QB to groom behind and aging Romo.

Oh and if he pans out we can call him Wild Thing like Charlie Sheen's character from Major League.

I think it's time they revamp the PS setup a bit. Maybe expand as mentioned to 10 players, and 2 can be protected, but 1 must be a QB to develop.
But if a team wants that QB or the other player, say a draft pick is tied to it, so the player can still be promoted to an active roster, but the team losing him gets compensated. with either a draft pick, or a trade. A team can't say no to the player moving, as this holds back player movement. But they get something in return or a chance to match the offer.
Even if kept at 8 players, let them protect at least a QB if not 2 players. If they don't use that option to have a QB, then it's one less player they can protect.

The more spots on a real roster for QBs the better it would be for QBs like Vaughan's chances of getting a real NFL paycheck and developing.

The idea of somehow giving team an extra spot that can only be a QB is interesting. Any additional protected players would have to be done by increasing the 53 man roster size. The reason the don't allow restricting practice squad players is because it restricts their ability to make more money if another team wants to sign them to their 53 man roster. The PS guys make about 100K and the lowest pay on the 53 is almost 500K.

I think the simplest thing would be to just increase the 53 man roster limit to 55. Just having a couple of more spot would be significant. Obviously as a fan, I would like to see even more spots, but I think 55 would be a reasonable number.

It just seems that 53 is not enough protected spots. It's silly that one team loses a player that they been developing and then they claim a player that another team has been developing and the cycle continues.

None of my business, but how did you ascertain this fact?

LOL

You didn't see those things last time he was driving down the highway? He blew all his change buying PBR for Sarge and had to air dry 'em. :D

The next starting QB that will take the field will most likely be a 1st round draft pick. Not a developmental player. I know its possible to develop a quality starting QB. But its highly unlikely.

What would Vaughan do under center of the 1st team with 1st team receivers?

But then what would he do on the first team against first team defenders?

The task of the coaching staff is to determine what he would look like if he were up to speed with the playbook, using all the skills we see starting quarterbacks use as far as audibles and such.

I don't know. But they should be looking into it.

He may have something, but I would be willing to risk an attempt to stash him on the PS before losing a roster spot.
