ESPN: Ed Werder Reports on Video Board

If the best they can do for a Cowboys controversy in 2009 is the height of our scoreboard (as pathetic as that is) I'm all for it. etter that than to have a controversy involving personell.

I agree, that would be a good year.

But, he's a highly respected writer. Of course, he's highly respected by his buddies, fellow ESPN co-workers and people who want to be employed by ESPN...but highly respected nonetheless.

I have yet to see ESPN actually at the league offices asking why the jumbotron wasn't raised higher. Instead they would rather be at Cowboys Stadium or Arlington calling it a 'controversy' and blaming Jerry Jones.

Times like this you can't help but think how desperate ESPN and Mr. Blue Suit are for ANY story in regards to the Cowboys. Yet, they refused to report that Roethlisberger was having a civil suit filed against him for sexual assault.

Go figure.

Ain't nothing but a bunch of puppets.

I still say that Ed Werder is respected within the journalism community not just ESPN.

As for your other comments, I agree.

ESPN's rating must be down as a result of the Cowboys not being the headline story every day this summer.

The Cowboys really haven't done much to warrant ESPN coverage. Of course, that's a good thing.

I see these as contradicting each other. You say that you agree with my other comments, particularly how desperate ESPN and Mr. Blue Suit are to report any story about the Cowboys and instead of going to the league office where this problem started, they are instead at Dallas. But, he's highly repsected in the journalism community.

Does the journalism community respect desperate journalists?

I hope not.

I really think this story could be informative and entertaining by just going to the league and inquiring what they are going to do about the situation. But they refuse to do so.

So standing outside the NFL offices and getting a "no comment" would be informative and entertaining? As far as the hype about the new stadium goes that punt hitting the board was the best thing Jerry could have hoped for because if that doesn't happen no one outside of us Cowboys' fans would give a .... about the new stadium right now.

Who says they would automatically get 'no comment?' And if you're a journalist and you're getting a 'no comment', then you could make that out as being the league has something to hide or wants to avoid talking about the subject. Happens all of the time, particularly at ESPN.

Is that any less informative and entertaining as the Cowboys saying 'we met the league rules.'

Well, entertaining in how desperate ESPN and Mr. Blue Suit are in getting any story about the Cowboys and continuing to ruin their credibility. But other than that, I don't see it.

"Hypnotoads 'Video Board Lefail" is very large, boldly and sumptuously painted, and it commands the viewer's attention in an altogether forthright manner. It is also carefully and shrewdly composed, and it takes full advantage of each object's shape, volume, texture and color to build a thoroughly monumental image."

"This is the kind of painting earlier artists produced to establish their right to be called 'master.' It is a diploma piece that proves this painter's worth, and that pays tribute to past masters like Van Gogh. It also is a statement directed at today's art world and its foibles and trivialities by a man who is simply beyond being just a painter. As such, it has a point to make about artistic quality, integrity and truth, and makes it directly and well - by example rather than by painterly polemics or exhortation."

"Hypnotoad may be termed a symbolic realist, able to find truth or deeper meaning in simple, ordinary things -- natural, man-made, animate and inanimate -- meaning that is missed by the thoughtless surface glance and revealed only by means of the prolonged looking, or contemplation, of the artist and his emotionally charged interaction with his world"

I don't think they do contradict each other. A reporter works for a particular organization. That reporter's skills as a journalist may not be unquestioned and based on his experience in the business, he may be highly respected.

But that doesn't mean people necessarily have to like the approach the organization itself takes. Good reporters/journalist can get caught up in the changes in philosophy of a particular organization.

Be that as it may, I agreed more with your point about Ben Roethlisberger. Initially, I was on the side of ESPN because it was an allegation. But as I learned more about the incident, especially information about other stories ESPN did on mere allegations, I became less sympathetic.

I think everyone knows that ESPN "loves" the Cowboys and that "controversy" drives ratings. Still, I think journalists can be respected even if they work in such an environment for such a publication or, in this case, broadcast organization.

I believe the scoreboard issue is being overblown, personally. But I think it's a story, nonetheless. People are talking about it. Even though it's not a big deal to me, it is a big deal to others. And that merits a story.

Doing a story on the scoreboard controversy doesn't hurt ESPN's credibility. The Roethlisberger situation? Yeah. The scoreboard issue? Probably only to Dallas Cowboys fans.
