Judge upholds ruling against Commanders' trademark; team can appeal

  • Associated Press
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the cancellation of the Washington Commanders' trademark registration, ruling that the team name may be disparaging to Native Americans.

The ruling by Judge Gerald Bruce Lee affirms an earlier finding by an administrative appeal board. The judge ordered the federal Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the registration.

I would guess that will be the end of tomahawk missles, Apache Helicopters, Blackhawk Helicopters or the Chinook. And to use code names like Geronimo in the killing of Bin Laden was uncalled for.

That not I am offended by the term Commander but those are names of tribes. Some people compare calling a Commander to calling a black the "N" word or Mexican the "W". Apples to oranges.

and some people are easily offended there are Native Americans who have no problem with the name and some are Commander fans as well. There are high schools with the same name and members of the team were native Americans. I think some groups want and need attention

Because some people are not offended doesn't mean it shouldn't be removed, or that it's really not that offensive. There's a whole lot of people not offended by the confederate flag, or people who even use the "N" word amongst each other. Doesnt make it any less offensive.

The Court system has basically decided that the Constitution was a nice suggestion, but has outlived its purpose.

No decision surprises me anymore. They just make stuff up as they go.

So anything that offends some should be stopped? Fine rapper need to stop using the N word as well as blacks all together but they don't. Do not set a rule for some and not all or better yet people need to stop the over sensitive BS. When Native Americans high school team is called the Commanders I seriously doubt they did that to be negative and I don't think the Washington Commanders use the name as a insult they use it as a sense of pride.

Except that there is an actual multitude of American Indian groups that are offended by the Commanders TM that have brought suit unlike your strawmen.

Then you can compare and contrast the history of the US armed services and the Commanders over the past 75 years.

Washington Natives seems like a perfectly logical and acceptable choice to me. Get to keep the logo, mascot, and turns the "offensive" nature into one more of praise and reverence

and there is a High School football team made up of Native American called the Commanders, I doubt they are offending themselves. If tomorrow some one is offended by the Cowboys do we change it?

Someone is not familiar with the Civil Rights Act. And I guarantee you once the big fish is put into its place they will move onto other battles.

Frankly, reading your arguments all I see is 'I use the word and I'm not racist.' Just because most Commanders fans are willfully ignorant of US history as it pertains to the indigenous people and simply like their team is besides the point.

The name just like that flag has a long, despicable, storied history even if you choose to ignore it. The cliche is 'those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.' Not 'if people forget it doesn't matter anymore.'

Commanders have also won in courts over the years as well, if you keep going long enough sooner or later you will find a court to agree with your position. Fact is it is this courts view but this battle is not over with as of yet just because one side gets the verdict they wanted.

As for the flag you can take it down it does not change history, removing it does nothing. People will still buy it and fly it and not all who do are racist because the meaning is much different than how some view it

Yup. The "I'm not racist thus the flag/name is not racist' argument again. State sponsorship is meaningful even if you don't think so.

You're obviously inflexible and your arguments are not the one's going on in court so you go ahead and believe what you want.

I have no issue with South Carolina removing the flag from Gov. Buildings. After all it is not the State Flag of South Carolina to begin with. The Palmetto tree with
Crescent moon is the state official flag so that along with the US flag should fly over Gov buildings. Unless the fact you think the US flag which slavery took place under for a longer time is also offensive? How about Washington DC, George was a slave owner as was Jefferson so do we take down the monuments as well? Thrown in the Bill of Rights and Constitution as well since the people who wrote it signed it were also representative of slavery We can do all of that it does not change the history at all.

I'm sorry I am inflexible because I do not believe as you do? You view is the only view and anyone who thinks otherwise is inflexible. Really neat how that works.

Being wishy washy doesn't help your position. I suggest you study US history circa 1861, 1865, 1965 and try again. That is the 'heritage.' I had family in PA and MD in the 19th century btw.

I call you inflexible because of your sophist, 'let's throw as much **** against the wall as we can' routine. Every post is a new set of arguments. LEt's review:

You started off by saying that the military uses other Indian names. You then moved onto other schools use Indian names. You then moved onto some rappers are racist. You then moved onto it doesn't matter. You then moved onto Jefferson and Washington did it too.

Sounds like a 5 year old who got in trouble and is looking for an excuse frankly.

Funny thing is, if Dan Snyder feels he has to change the team name, those who are fighting this PC battle on team names aren't going to be happy with his choice. There is a local Native American tribe, the Patawomecks, which have stated they would be glad if Snyder named the team after them. http://spectator.org/articles/59851/patawomeck-tribe-snyder-could-rename-Commanders-after-us

Another rumor has been the team would potentially be renamed the BraveHearts, and keeping the logo. Both decisions would piss of the name-change crowd, and frankly I'd love to see them continue to whine about it.
