Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin confirmed Friday that quarterback Kenny Hill has been granted his release from the program and can transfer to any school of his choice.

"[Kenny] is meeting with his family and figuring out what he wants to do," Sumlin told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

Big 12 champion TCU is a strong possibility for Hill, a source told ESPN.com's Travis Haney.

Hill replaced former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel for the Aggies and surged to the forefront of the early Heisman race with a 511-yard, three-touchdown demolition of fellow SEC opponent South Carolina to open the 2014 season.

Soon after, Hill's parents filed for a trademark for the nickname "Trill," which Hill adopted in the wake of the revelatory performance.

Hill and the Aggies continued their march through September, preying mostly on weaker nonconference foes to land at 5-0 and earn a No. 6 ranking after the season's first month.

Then things changed. Texas A&M lost its next three games and five of its final seven. By November, Hill was replaced by freshman Kyle Allen, who led the team to wins against Louisiana-Monroe, Auburn and West Virginia to salvage an 8-5 finish.

This was basically guaranteed to happen the day TAMU signed Kyle Allen.

Allen was the country's top QB prospect.

I don't know all the issues with Hill but reality is he probably goes pro in baseball.
He may commit to TCU and even enroll but once the baseball folks make him a contract offer he likely leaves the sport for good.

I was saying after that first game he won how bad this guy is. Can't throw the ball more than 15 yards downfield, accurately. A certain national talking head celebrity who is a huge A&M fan blocked me on social media just because I said that very thing about him. ha ha.

I think I know which talking head you're talking about. Initials R.M.?

Kyler Murray: Heart with Texas A&M
Updated: January 30, 2015, 8:26 AM ET
By Gerry Hamilton | ESPN.com

Gatorade National Player of the Year and No. 1-ranked quarterback Kyler Murray has ended his recruitment and remains committed to Texas A&M.

After a nervous week for the Aggies amid Murray's unofficial visit to the Texas Longhorns nine days ago, a collective fan base and coaching staff can breathe a sigh of relief.

Jonathan Dyer/USA TODAY SportsThe finalization for Kyler Murray came after a Thursday night in-home visit by Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital.

"Texas A&M is where my heart is at," Murray said late Thursday night. "Coach [Charlie] Strong and Texas is a great opportunity, but I felt that A&M was the place for me. Not because of my dad having played there, but just the right place for me."

The finalization for Murray came after a Thursday night in-home visit by Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital.

"It went well," Murray said. "All my questions were answered. I just can't wait to get this all over with and get back to playing ball."

Murray's decision comes three weeks after Texas A&M granted quarterback Kenny Hill his release to transfer to any school of his choice.

Hill was replaced late last season at quarterback by freshman Kyle Allen, who helped the Aggies salvage an 8-5 finish.

Murray will sign his letter of intent to Texas A&M on Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET in a ceremony at Allen High.

Murray made a really odd choice in going Aggie.
He isn't going to usurp Kyle Allen and will have to sit two years.

It's no odd choice. Kyler has been an Aggie since he was born. I was at A&M the same time as Kevin Murray, and he was absolutely beloved there by everyone. He was the AP Offensive Player of the Year in 1986 in all of college football. Kyler was brought up with maroon blood.

And he very well may "usurp" Allen. Sumlin has said in the past many, many times that the best player plays. That's how Manziel rose to the surface and started as a freshman, despite the competition with Joeckel, Showers, and others (Matt Davis maybe, I forget?) who would have presumably been ahead of him in the pecking order.

I could see Murray beating out Allen. It really depends on if Sumlin/Spavital want to play a more traditional air-raid style offense (which suits Allen), or tailor the offense to Murray like they did with Manziel.

Another thing, when Kyler originally committed to A&M months ago, he KNEW both Allen and Hill (at the time) were going to be ahead of him on the depth chart. And that didn't phase him at the time - why would it be odd that he'd suddenly not want to compete with Allen now?

Honestly JT, if he goes high enough in the MLB draft, he may never play a down of football for A&M. To me, if that happens, then Murray has played this the very best possible way. He doesn't hurt his situation with he and his father at A&M, he doesn't really hurt Texas and A&M new this going in so he doesn't hurt them either.

Who knows what will happen?

various:
First, I actually know a lot about Murray and his Dad. They live 15 minutes away.
I am not here to bicker with fan boys about it, just being realistic.

notes:
No, Murray will not unseat Allen. Allen has proven he will start at TAMU and they will build the offense around him.
This off-season in aggieville is about doing just that.
Murray may get that same treatment in a few years but he likely isn't around TAMU by that time.

Yes, baseball is likely his long term sport. He is considered a borderline 1st round pick right now as a middle infielder and his size is not a detractor for baseball.

BUT, Murray loves football and would like to play a couple years before going to MLB.

So again, it is an odd choice.
He backed off TAMU for a while after he saw Allen take over.
And he may have decided not to go to UT because his Dad had actually worked with/coached Heard before.

While I have a pretty good idea of what he was thinking previously who knows what a kid is thinking this second.
I think it now very likely Murray doesn't ever play a down of college football.
He will get a couple million reasons not to each of the next couple seasons.
After that the signing bonuses will be much smaller.

So you can make any statement you want, and if someone has a differing opinion, they're a "fan boy" and you aren't going to "bicker" with them. Got it.

What a wonderful setup you have as a king arbiter of all knowledge.

Your opinion of the Murray situation has no more credibility than anybody else's.

murray heavily weighed a switch and he did so for very logical reasons.

kyle allen is entrenched there.
he is going to get every chance to succeed and they will not make any quick switches because he'd leave and could transfer anywhere in the country.
they aren't going to risk that for a guy whose a better baseball prospect than football one.
murray going to ou made a lot of sense.
going to ut slightly less but still arguable.
going to tamu is just odd aside from the family tie and being a legacy there.

this likely means he goes pro in baseball sooner rather than later and is basically keeping his honorary aggie tie.

Seems foolish, to me, for Lodge to base a decision on where Murray goes. I mean, if you knew he would be the QB, then I can understand it but as has been mentioned, he might never play for Aggies. You sitll have a pretty good option in Allen but IDK. I think Lodge might end up at Ole Miss.

Kyler has ties to to both A&M and UT. His uncle Calvin played baseball at UT. Calvin Murray was also the batter at the plate when Randy Johnson's pitch killed that bird. Obviously his ties to his father are stronger. Also, the opportunity at A&M may be a little better at this moment. Not necessarily the opportunity to start, but the football program in general. A&M is in a good conference while right now Texas is in the conference that got left out of the inaugural playoffs.
