Cutting Barber makes sense for Cowboys
January, 27, 2010

By Tim MacMahon

The case to cut Marion Barber is simple: The Cowboys can get similar production from Tashard Choice for less than one-tenth of the price.

Jerry Jones told reporters at the Senior Bowl that money won't be a determining factor on whether Barber will be back next season. We'll see if the owner feels the same way when it comes time to give Barber, who is due a base salary of $3.8 million, a $4 million roster bonus this spring.

This isn't about bashing Barber, whose production has dropped drastically since he signed a seven-year, $45 million deal and became the Cowboys' starter. If it was, we'd point out that he's injury prone and disturbingly ineffective in short-yardage situations for a back whose game is based on power.

The Cowboys would be foolish not to make Felix Jones the lead horse in 2010. Choice is more than capable of serving as a complementary back, and unlike Barber, he'd fill that role at a reasonable price. The Cowboys can draft another back in the middle rounds to play special teams and back up Jones and Choice.

Choice's opportunities haven't come often, but he's proven the Cowboys can count on him.

There have been nine games in which Choice got at least eight carries over the last two seasons. In those games, he rushed for 631 yards (5.0 per carry) and five touchdowns and caught 28 passes for 258 yards.

In other words, when given a chance, Choice has been better than Barber.

The dollars aren't the only reasons it makes sense for the Cowboys to move on without Barber.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure about this. Yes, it would save Jerry money, but how would it make us a better team in 2010? Nor do I see Choice as a goal line hammer.

i don't know. we already gave Barber the big bonus so it isn't like keeping him is going to break us. We simply need to go into next year with an open competition for snaps.

I give him another year to see if he can get it back.

If they were to cut him draft Dwyer or Hardesty and let's go.

Choice can be very productive and it's a waste just having him stand on the sidelines. I've always loved Barber and the raw emotion and force he runs with, but it may be time to move on.

I'm really torn on several levels. I do feel he has lost something but he is a emotional leader. Will we be better with out him, I dont think so. Is Choice the better #2 option at this point? It seems so.

The other part that is torn has nothing to do with anything but greed. I would not want to see Barber gone with out getting something back in exchange. No, he does not have much trade value but is he not at least worth a 5th round draft pick that we currently lack?

I agree 100%. It just seems it may be time to move on from him, all we can do is wait and see what approach we take with this situation.

Late 3rd Middle 4th we should be able to get.

If you were a GM would you give up a late 3rd or middle 4th for Barber?

I'm sure someone will give us a 3rd..its not like hes not producing. His YPC is 4.4 which is the same as Peterson, but its Choices turn. Barber has to move on. Later 3rd early 4th don't settle for anything less.

Unless Barber's carries are going to be drastically reduced, I'm not opposed to cutting him. If he's going to get the amount of carries he got this year, it'll be detrimental to the team.

Man, it seems like he just got here! cut him? that's drastic, I could see Philly jumping on him with Westbrook fading and having him comeback and haunt us - heck maybe even the Skins :skins:

Seattle, Houston, Detroit, Tampa Bay.... keep him out of the NFC East.

It'd be funny if he went to Seattle... Hello Julius:)

San Diego and Kansas City are both in the market for a power back. Might be a place to start looking, since A.J. Smith (Chargers G.M.) and Scott Pioli (KC's G.M.) like a steady running game.

Those thinking we could get a 4th for Barber are mistaken. We would be lucky to get a 5th for him. Runningbacks with Barber's mileage and wear and tear have little trade value.

I cant believe people are even considering this. Barber is still a beast and remember he wasnt given many carries to get things going.
