One of the theories being kicked around in an effort to figure out why the heck the Cowboys threw Champ Bailey's way 16 times Sunday is that Tony Romo is a right-handed quarterback who prefers to throw that direction.
If you go just by the numbers from this season, the evidence seems to support that theory. According to Stats Inc., Romo has thrown 70 passes to the right side of the field, 61 to the middle and left side. Of course, four games is a small sample size.
Expand the study to include all Romo's throws since 2006, the season he became a starter, and the right-left balance is almost even: 640 throws to the right, 620 to the left, 178 in the middle of the field.
So why did Romo keep testing a Hall of Fame-caliber cornerback in the loss to the Broncos? It wasn't because he was thinking right.
Tony Romo's throw distribution by direction, according to Stats Inc.:
2009 SEASON
Left sideline: 12-24-0, 143 yards, 0 TD
Left: 18-25-1, 299 yards, 0 TD

Right: 16-35-2, 180 yards, 1 TD
Right sideline: 23-35-1, 280 yards, 3 TD
