ESPN MacMahon: Jerry hesitant to make coaching change

I think that Philips should stay. Its because of our defense throughout the year that has brought about our success. Its our offense that has sputtered and this is all because of Jason Garrett, who is nothing more than an average OC. If anyone needs to go let it be Jason. His playcalling all season and his inability to adjust makes me wonder why he is even calling the offense.

I was down on Wade earlier in the year. He seemed not sufficiently in charge on the sidelines -- and that goes to show how silly it is to try to judge that kind of thing by watching TV.

But I'm warming to the idea of keeping him. Coaching changes are always disruptive, and head coaching changes are the most disruptive of all. A little continuity when seeing improved play by the defense and by Romo is a good thing.

However, if Jerry Jones the GM has decided that Garrett is the next Head Coach, I would rather Jerry Jones go ahead and make the move.

No offense man, but how can you agree with what Alex said (which is that if Garrett is the next coach, he'd prefer Wade stay and run the defense as head coach), but say you'd rather have Jerry fire Phillips and put Garrett in charge?

I do agree with Alexander. If the choice is Phillips running the defense with Garrett running the offense, or Garrett running the offense and goodness knows who running the defense... I'll take Phillips any day.

Wade is one of those coaches that does enough to stick around but can never win a championship, or even get close. It's possible to do worse than Wade, but there are a lot better coaches out there.

Of course there's other things to consider than just should Wade go or stay. For instance, who would take his place? The primary and probable candidate would be Garrett. Is Garrett really that much better? Then again, Garrett does seem to be the heir apparent so if we bring Wade back for one or two more years, I can't see him getting us to a Super Bowl. So all it would do is delay the inevitable, which would be hiring Garrett.

While I don't want Garrett as our next HC, if it is going to happen then I'd rather get it over with sooner rather than later. I really see no reason to stick with Wade another season or two and then replace him with Garrett. Might as well get a head start on the Garrett era so then we can definitively see what he can or can't do and if he in fact isn't the answer then move on as soon as possible. Frankly, I would've preferred that to have happened this past year.

I've said from the start that Wade is capable of having winning records and getting teams to the playoffs. But beyond that, he's never won a playoff game and even if he does get one, do you really expect him to get 3 or 4 playoff wins in the same season? Really? If not, then let's move on to someone who can.

Ha. Possibly. Though there does seem to be a Cult of Norv thing going on there these days.

We've got our QB and our owner coming out in favor of the head coach, yet we still suffer through multiple stories about who his successor might be. Because we tolerate it and keep it a topic for discussion.

After the season there will be time to discuss Wade's employment. I wish for now we'd just enjoy the ride. Especially considering how well Wade's got our defense performing.

The same could have been written about Tom Landry at one point. Worse could have been written about Belichick at one point as well.

I'm not saying Phillips will have as much success as those guys... but you don't know what he will do in the future. He could lead this team to the super bowl this year and have a 5 year streak of successful playoff runs.

Will he? Nobody knows, but we don't know he'll fail either. I think he deserves some more time to prove himself. I agree with Jerry that continuity is key to successful franchises.

If this team winds up winning a game or two in the playoffs I'm actually not going to be shocked, at this point, if Wade stays. I thought for much of the year, well all of it really, that he'd have to make at least the NFC Championship game, possibly win the Superbowl, to stay on but I'm starting to believe, at this point, that if they win a playoff game or two that he'll be retained.

I think if this team wins 2 games in the playoffs, Wade is almost guaranteed of being back for another year. I think based on JJ's statement that the likely bar has been set at one playoff win. Get that and he's back.

Not sure what I think about this but it's clear to me that this team may not be as soft as I thought.

I understand that, not all of Wade 0-4 playoff runs have been top talented teams. Since he has came to Dallas he is 13-3, 9-7 and looking at 11-5 or 10-6 and another opportunity to get this team over the hump. I just don't know many coaches who in 3 season has his job in jeopardy for that record. It is the hand Wade has been dealt and for his sake and the sake of this team I hope as his dad said they kick that door down this season.

I've been one of Wade's harshest critics, but I'm starting to come around to him returning as coach next year. There are a few reasons for this.

Continuity is very important for a head coach to succeed. Unless you have Peyton Manning. Looking at Cowher and Dungy on tv makes me think that coaching is overrated. I don't feel that way about coordinators though.

The defense is starting to play up to their potential. They have been playing lights out for awhile now.

And the final reason is I think Garrett is still raw and needs more time. I honestly have no idea how Garrett will turn out, but he has potential. I just don't think he's doing as well as he could right now. But then again I felt the same way about Sean Payton, and he turn out alright. Giving Garrett more time to mature may be what's best for the Cowboys.

To me, it all depends on the plan.

If the plan is to replace Phillips with Garrett, I would as soon have him back that go that direction because it is highly unlikely Garrett will be able to secure a defensive coordinator as effective. It is a simple cost analysis. We would not gain much in a head coach and there would be a drain on the defense which honestly is the unit performing at the most consistent clip right now.

This makes tons of sense!

However, how do you fire a Head Coach who is 15 games over .500 in 3 Regular Seasons and gets you to the Divisional Round of the Playoffs?

Ask Jerry, he ****canned a coach coming off back to back Super Bowl wins...

I did like his explanation to NBC Sunday night. He talked about having confidence in this coaching staff and they have his support, but the staff (Wade) needs to "validate" that confidence and support in the coming weeks.

I heard that also, I had to double take because I wasn't sure that was our Jerry Jones who spoke that intelligently about the situation. He nailed it.
