ESPN MacMahon: Jerry: 'We've got a player in Doug Free'

The big question will be can he play LEFT tackle.

In my opinion, Free is better suited as a left tackle than a right tackle. His strengths are agility, quickness, and pass protecting, which is the primary function of a left tackle. His weaknesses are strength and power, and right tackles are generally maulers who excel in run blocking.

However, according to a recent Bob Sturm article, Free is "not the answer."

"Free is a great example of young players and how they progress when they get to play," owner/general manager Jerry Jones said on KRLD-FM. "There’s just no other way around it. You’ve got to get in games and let them play games and they get better right before your eyes.

Oh, so this is why we played choice, austin, ogletree, and our other young talent right? Oh no, we just let them rot on the bench for years.

He had a better game against the Saints than Flozell. Of course, that's not saying much.

Free has some work to do, but I don't know if we should be able to envision how he's going to turn out yet. He's a work in progress.

Saints have good speed rushers in Will Smith and Charles Grant. The only plays made by their DEs were made against Flo.

Exaggerate much? Choice was #3 and played with MB and Felix was hurt.

Austin was a raw talent who got the reps and demonstrated what he could do when given the chance, after he learned the game.

Jenkins and Scandrick played almost immediately as rookies.

Ogletree is playing as a rookie FA.

Absolutely...it took us 13 games last year to see that choice could play...austin sat the bench after showing the same stuff he always has shown in the preseason, ogletree played after sitting, and sitting, and sitting, and oh yeah the others ahead of him started laying eggs...oh, and then the owner chimmed in.

The DBs played right away...oh, becuase we did not have anyone else...

Yup, i exagerate though.

Oh and how about those awesome 2 TE sets with our young talent that we wouldn't trade for a 1st round pick???

yup...I'm wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off.

I see an adequate player...maybe.

I can't envision Free being an above average lineman.

how the hell do you come to this conclusion? the guy has held his own through he first 4 starts of his career without looking like he is lost, or out of place. he is already average at the moment even if he doesnt improve at all from this point. i think he a pretty high ceiling considering he was a 5th round pick. if we have another columbo type player on the left side, it makes us much better then a washed up flo.

My remark wasn't a slight against Free, but against Flo. Adams was the weak link on the line in that game.

Sorry, I didn't get your gist.

Adams has been the weak link on the line in most of the games this year so that is nothing new.

Broadus today said on the Radio that he isn't a guy that defenses just think they can take advantage of.

He believes he is a solid player with more upside.

When Colombo went down, I was worried. I thought Free would suck, but it's good to hear he is playing well. If we can get a young offensive lineman to pan out that would help us out a lot. That way we don't have to overpay in free agency.

I don't know how good Free really is but one thing I do know is he is no Proctor. Thank God.

Adequate? It's his first games ever as a NFL player. I see A LOT of potential.

He doesn't have enough junk in his trunk to ever be an elite player.

Exactly!!!

Look around at the contracts that good LTs get in the league. Next to QB, the LT is usually considered the most important position on the team. Think of it this way, if your LT sucks then your probably going to need several QBs to get through a season.

If we can move Free to LT and not have to go out in free agency to get one, it will be like hitting the lottery!!!!

Obviously Jerreh hasn't talked to Burmashave yet about HIS opinion of Doug Free. :D

Bob Sacamano;3167588 said:
then I question your football acumen

why can't Free succeed a LT?

dude has all the attributes

his weakest one is his strength (no pun ment) and he can work on that with our S&C coach
