Darren (Dallas): Matt, is Jason Campbell destined for failure? Let's be honest, he has an aging running back and unreliable receivers. Can he earn a new contract by not losing games?
Matt Mosley: Welcome to our weekly chat. I think Jason Campbell needs Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly to grow up in a hurry. The Commanders need someone who can complement Santana Moss -- and so far neither of those guys has done anything. I keep hearing rave reviews on Fred Davis. We'll have to wait and see. I still believe in Jason Campbell -- as a lot of you know.
Yatin (LA): What do you think the Eagles do w/ Sheldon? I think he's gonna be this year's Lito. He'll sit behind Samuel, Hanson and Hobbs, see minimal playing time in dime situations, and then given the boot at the end of the season. Thoughts?
Matt Mosley: Well, they need a Jason Taylor situation to break out. If another team suddenly has a rash of injuries in the secondary, Sheldon Brown will become a much more appealing option. If they can land a third-round pick for him, they'd do it in a heartbeat.
Don (NJ): Matt, question about Big D. So you said after the draft that you questioned a few of Dallas' picks. That being said, you just saw/met a few of the rookies and talked to some coaches. Two weeks after the draft are your thoughts still the same or do you think this can be a productive class for dallas? Thanks love your work
Matt Mosley: Thanks, Don! I feel a little better about the class after meeting some of the guys and watching them a little bit. But not a lot better. Too many big-time personnel guys have told me off-the-record that Jason Williams was a curious pick at No. 69. I can't find anyone who's in love with the kid -- except maybe the Cowboys. The Brewster kid's a great story, and I really think he's an amazing young man. But I'd be scared to death about his lack of strength. Stephen Hodge out of TCU and Mickens and Smith out of Cincy are the guys who impressed me the most. With Folk's injury, the Buehler picks looks a lot better.
Stellablue, WA : Matt - Wondering what Bert Favre had for Dinner last night ?
Matt Mosley: That's not my territory...but I'm told he had the guiltless chicken platter at Chili's in Hattiesburg.
Alex (Langhorne, PA): Matt, if everyone expects Hakeem Nicks to compete right away, and the giants had receiver Jeremy Maclin higher than Nicks, why don't people think Maclin can compete right away?
Matt Mosley: Who said Maclin can't compete right away? I think he'll be on the field quite a bit in Week 1. I know the Eagles had some injuries, but DeSean Jackson would've fought his way into the starting lineup without injuries. Maclin will be starting by midseason at the latest.
JP Washington DC: Hey Matt love the blog. What is the logic (from the Commanders perspective) of putting Osack-Po at LB. Its really mind boggling to me, but at the same time the defensive side of the ball has been consistently good. If we can generate a consistent pass rush could you put our name next to the Steelers when it comes to dominant defense?
Matt Mosley: I'd hold off on the whole Steelers angle. Give it a week or two of OTAs before you break out the Terrible Towels for this bunch. I wrote a column last Thursday about what you're talking about. Moving Orakpo to SAM on first and second downs doesn't make sense to me at all. Find a way to let him do what he does best: rush the passer. You don't want this guy constantly dropping back in coverage. Makes no sense to move him to SAM. Add 10 pounds to his frame and let him play rush-end DE...Give me a break with this "we already have Andre Carter" nonsense.
Joe III (Jersey): Matt- Which Giants WR will have the biggest impact this year? I feel Hixon and Nicks will be the starters with Smith in the slot. Also, Barden could rack up all the Fantasy points with TD's in the GreenZone....YOUR THOUGHTS?
Matt Mosley: I would steer clear of Barden in fantasy. I think he's more of a developmental player. I think Steve Smith and Nicks will be the starters -- with Hixon being the third guy.
Mark (Lansing): Hey matt, I've got one question, I just read in Yahoo(I know they're competition) that the Giants are one of the teams forecasted to not make the playoffs. Do you think this is true? Why or why not?
Matt Mosley: I have no clue how anyone would predict the Giants missing the playoffs.
Carlos (miami FL): Hey Matt , do you think new Giant stadium will be like New Yankee stadium and have balls flying every where (worse than they do now)
Matt Mosley: I don't think it will be any worse than old Giants Stadium, no.
Evan (Portland, OR): True or False? Felix Jones is starter in Dallas this year, with Barber as the closer (like in 2007)
Matt Mosley: False
Mo (NY): I think the whole Giants WR situation is blown out of proportion. Yes they lost that playoff game to the Eagles, but they beat the Panthers in that HUGE regular season game. This year their front 7 is much better and the running game will stilll be dominant. I think they will still be serious superbowl contenders right now. Thoughts?
Matt Mosley: I agree with you. But I do think Plax's absence played a role in that December slide. The reinforcements and more emphasis in the running game should do the trick. I think the Giants are the third or fourth best team in the league if they line up today.
Mark Jones (Cork, Ireland): Hi Matt, After the incident in Dallas, how do you think this will affect the club during the season if at all?
Matt Mosley: Mark, it's really tough to measure something like that. Most of the veterans weren't in the building, so they can only read and hear about the horror. The way the players responded was truly inspiring. I think the team will draw inspiration from Rich Behm, who was paralyzed from waist down in the incident. I talked to his brother, Chris, yesterday and it sounds like Rich isn't backing down to this enormous challenge. It's an awful tragedy, but I could certainly see the team rallying around Rich.
Marc ( City of Brotherly Love): Hey Matt you NFC Beast!!! With TO now hibernating in Buffalo and Plax headed to the slammer. Could it be actually be possible that the Eagles now have the best WRs in the NFC East? A long way from Charles Johnson and Torrance ( T-Rex) Smalls.
Matt Mosley: I think the Eagles certainly have the best receiving corps now. The Giants are No. 2, Cowboys No. 3 and the Skins are in fourth. I love Santana Moss, but one of those other guys needs to step up. Randle El should not be a No. 2 receiver at this point in his career.
ryan, new york: matt, love your column. Question, after being around the boys the last few weeks it may be hard to predict but do you think Jason Garret will have this offense a run-first type. He has to look at the success the Giants have had with the 3 back attack, and i think that will set up the play action for witten and roy. agreed?
Matt Mosley: If he's as smart as advertised, he'll need to build this thing around the running game. That will help cut down on some of Romo's careless ways and it will take pressure off Roy Williams and Miles Austin. Lots of running game, lots of Witten and Martellus Bennett is the way I see it. You can't run 37 percent of the time -- like they tried to do last season.
Bob (Fairport, NY): Do you see Pierce bouncing back with a solid season after getting torched by backs during the Plaxico saga? Also who's the best pickup in free agency/the draft this year (Osi included since he's coming back from injury)?
Matt Mosley: For the money, Michael Boley was a really nice pickup for the Giants. But the biggest impact might be Jason Peters in Philly. I know you asked for FA/draft, but I chose to expand things a bit with the Peters trade. He'll make a huge impact on the left side -- especially in the running game.
Christopher (Newark): Better safety this year: Kenny Phillips (from the U) or Ken Hamlin?
Matt Mosley: Phillips
M (DC): With all the fuss about Commanders "aging" OL, why does nobody mention that Cowboys line is actually older with no starters under 30?
Matt Mosley: Now that's a good question. Hard to believe Andre Gurode's already 30 but I guess the fact that he was drafted in 2001 puts him at that age. I just think people think Marc Colombo, a former first-rounder, is a lot better than anything the Skins have to offer at right tackle. And Leonard Davis may be 30, but he still has more tread left than Randy Thomas. Gurode probably wins the competition with Rabach. That leaves Samuels vs. Adams. That's almost a push. So I'll give you Dockery over Kyle Kosier.
Bob (Fairport, NY): Who do you see being the Giants team MVP if they make the playoffs this season?
Matt Mosley: Eli Manning
David (Miami): matt, how can u say the giants have a better receiving corps than dalls? at least the cowboys have 1 semi-proven guy.
Matt Mosley: Give me Hixon, Nicks, Smith, Barden and Manninghamn over Williams, Austin, Hurd and Crayton anytime. They just have a lot more collective talent.
Trent (Omaha): Hello Matt, what is the situation at Dallas at WR? Are they rebuilding at that position and are they trying to develop any one to be the next TO (without the attitude)? Also, who are the projected starters?
Matt Mosley: I think the projected starters are Williams and Austin. Crayton and Sam Hurd will battle for that third spot. Jerry Jones thinks Austin is on the verge of replacing T.O. in terms of big-play ability, but that seems like a stretch to me. And all this talk about Roy Williams having the greatest offseason in the history of the league is pretty humorous. But I do think he'll be better than last season, which isn't saying much.
Zach (CT): Matt, I still say there is no way they go into the season with just them at WR. Maybe Ogletree will develop inton something down the road, but I really believe that Matt Jones will be lining up at WR for them this season.
Matt Mosley: No one at Valley Ranch has indicated that to me. Jerry Jones knows the player really well because of the Arkansas connection, but there's a history of off-the-field stuff. And the Cowboys are trying to get away from that stuff a little bit.
Jeff (Los Angeles): If Jason Campbell doesn't make the playoffs or puts up good numbers, is it safe to say Snyder will not renew his contract?
Matt Mosley: yes
James (Missouri): Matt how come nobody is talking about the Chiefs? Pioli is an absolute genius and nobody has improved their team more in the offseason. Where is the love?
Matt Mosley: I cover the NFC East -- but I know Todd Haley really well. You give him a decent quarterback (check) and a decent pair of receivers (half-check), he should be OK. Do you have a running game? Well, he didn't need one in Arizona.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA): The Eagles moves seem to have put them in a position to lose the NFC Championship game by the least amount of points yet. Thoughts?
Matt Mosley: Funny. I think the Eagles have as good a chance as anyone to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, thus getting me back to Miami.
Nate (Queens, NY): is it just me or does Barden have the same kinda past as Marques Colston. I watche dhim at Hofstra and he was a man amongst boys. even did well at the senior bowl. I think Barden has the same kinda upside!
Matt Mosley: I think Colston was more of an all-around athlete. Barden could help you in the red zone big time. But first, he has to learn how to get releases from the line of scrimmage. Corners will try to beat him up at the line. Colston figured out how to get off the line early on. I think it will take Barden longer.
Shawn (Philly, PA): Could you expand on your thoughts of how the dallas RB situation will go? Felix was easly the most productive of the 3 backs.
Matt Mosley: Let's pretend like we saw enough of Felix to make definitive statements. I think Marion Barber will have somewhere between 18-20 carries perr game. Jones should get at least 10-12 touches per game at a minimum. And Choice should carry the ball 5-6 times and catch a couple of passes. If used properly, this looks like a formidable group.
Bob (Fairport, NY): Who are the players that takes a leap on offense and defense for the Giants this season?
Matt Mosley: Phillips is about to become a Pro Bowl player and I think the league will start to realize that Snee's one of the best guards in football. Just an absolute mauler in the run game.
Robert MD: How soon do you see the Commanders needing a replacement for Clinton Portis?
Matt Mosley: Never too early to start looking. That was embarrassing bringing up Shaun Alexander last season. And Ladell Betts gets banged up quite a bit this season. Maybe this Mason can help you out a little bit. Just wait to see who the Giants don't need. That's how the Packers did it a couple years ago.
Nate (Queens, NY): i still wish the Giants got the Robieskie kid!
Matt Mosley: I LOVE the kid. But he's a No. 2 receiver. Nicks can be a No. 1.
Nick (Denver, CO): Will DeMarcus Ware be able to repeat his performance from last season? And who else will have the most impact for the Cowboy's defense?
Matt Mosley: That's a tall order. I don't think he'll have 20 sacks again, no. But he'll be a force. I think Jay Ratliff will have a breakout season at nose tackle. He's versatile, and I could see him getting nine sacks from his NT spot.
Shane: (Pasadena, CA): After their first Rookie Mini Camp, what do you think Hakeem Nicks will contribute to the Giants offense this year?
Matt Mosley: I wasn't at the rookie camp. But based on what I know, it's reasonable to think he could have a season similar to what DeSean Jackson had in Philly in '08. And the Giants would be thrilled with that result.
Country (NJ): Matt, How big of an influence you think Haynesworth will have in NFC east games? Do you think he's going to give the Commanders a formidable defense the likes of the other NFC east teams?
Matt Mosley: They actually played pretty solid defense last season. They were something like fourth overall. But they don't pressure the passer enough. That's where Haynesworth can help you big time. Collapsing the pocket. But you better stop this Orakpo to SAM nonsense.
Mike (Milford, CT): how do you forsee Clint Sintim in the giatns defense this year..Starter? only on passing situations?
Matt Mosley: He'll be in some subpackages. I think they'll bring him in and let him play defensive end when Tuck moves inside. He'll also play a large role on special teams.
J-VILLA(washington,dc): do you think campbell will make it thru the season?
Matt Mosley: yes I do.
Darren (Dallas): Matty, I'm not too worried about Orakpo. He's like every other Longhorn: a college wonder who really never transfers that dominance to the pros.
Matt Mosley: The thing about former UT players is a fair point, but I don't think Orakpo belongs in that "spoiled" bunch. He's an incredibly hard worker in the weight room and he doesn't have that sense of entitlement that you see with some of those UT players -- and their fan base!!!!!!
Robert MD: So you think it is completely out of the question that Orakpo could contribute on the strong side?
Matt Mosley: I think he'd do a fine job there eventually. But it would lessen his impact. the guy was born to rush the passer. Why do you want to move him back off the line of scrimmage and make him go through run/pass keys. Let him trust his instincts, which usually lead him to the QB.
Bob (Fairport, NY): On 3rd down the Giants can line up 3 legitimate pass rushers in Tuck, Kiwanuka, and Umenyiora. And then put Canty in at DT with Simtim coming off behind Umenyiora. Also they can put Canty at DE for short yardage situations. Is this the most flexible and diverse defense in the league this year?
Matt Mosley: yes
Cory norfolk,va: Let me preface this question first. up is not down and right is not left. But...doesnt it seem like Jerry Jones has turned the corner is his ways of team management and finding responsible ways of winning as a GM via the draft and free agency?.
Matt Mosley: You can't make this statement until they actually win a playoff game.
Ben (Virginia): Mosley...IT'S MAY. I highly doubt Phillip Daniels was brought back on a veteran minimum contract to start and play at DE when we just got the best pass rusher in the draft. he'll be at DE in week 1 and the Skins defense will be much better for it.
Matt Mosley: You better hope that's the case. But I'm hearing that Blache really likes him at the SAM. And I'm hearing it from people who have offices at Commanders Park. Am I overreacting to a minicamp in early May? You bet I am!!
Matt (Chicago, IL): What are the chances of the Cowboys pickn up a vet WR like Harrison to help development of Austin? or is the price tag to high?
Matt Mosley: I think he's hanging it up. I don't think you'll see a vet.
Gave(LA,ca): Do you think the eagles addressed the rb position enough? It just seems that there isn't any depth, 2 small guys sitting 1 and 2?
Matt Mosley: You guys are never happy. LeSean McCoy should be an excellent backup and the Weaver kid can help you in a pinch. And I'm pretty sure the underwhelming (but talented) Lo Booker is still on the roster.
JOE (CP,MD): matt youre the best man thanks for the BEAST coverage. the eagles have ridiculous depth along the O line, d-backfield, and at wr. who do you think will be on the roster in sept?
Matt Mosley: Thanks, Joe...If you're talking DBs, I would say that Hobbs, Asante, Hansen will be the main guys with the rookie "Macho" man in the mix. I think Brown may be gone. At WR, I think there's a chance Reggie Brown is released. Everyone else is probably safe: curtis, baskett, avant, obviously maclin and jackson
Maue (Albany): Mario Manningham + Hakeem Nicks will = a poor mans Boldin Chad Johnson type duo.... they are the giants starters with Smith in the slot
Matt Mosley: Way too much being expected from Manningham. I don't think he's anywhere close to the starting lineup. But the Nicks-Boldin comparison is certainly a fair one.
Jack (philly): Who will step into the national spotlight for the Eagles this year after being formerly unheralded in years past?
Matt Mosley: Quintin Mikell. Really, really nice player who's been overshadowed by Dawkins. Folks, you've been wondeful. We started with 27 and ended up with just under 700. Need you to show up on time next week. Let me run back and get the first guy in line real quick.
Yoush DC: Will Colt Brennan get a chance to start if he has a good pre-season and campbell fails?
Matt Mosley: Yoush, you were first in line today. Congrats on that...The answer to your question is no. I don't see Colt Brennan ever starting in this league. I think he could be a superb starter in the CFL, but it's not happening at this level. All my best.
