Former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer has made a really nice transition into broadcasting over the past year or so. He's particularly adept at breaking down the quarterback position -- and he was kind enough to contribute his analysis of 49 different NFL quarterbacks to ESPN.com. He said he's tired of hearing quarterbacks take unfair criticism and wanted to have a deeper discussion. Here's his list. And he puts quarterbacks in the following categories: The Elite, The Superstars, Stars, Knocking at the Door, Glad They're Ours (GTOs), Gotta Prove It (GPIs), In The On-Deck Circle, Just-win Baby, Not Enough Evidence, Rehab Projects and Do Not Write Them Off Yet.

Here's where the quarterbacks on NFC East teams ended up:

Stars: 2. Donovan McNabb, 3. Eli Manning

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were the only two quarterbacks in "The Elite" category and they were followed by Drew Brees and Philip Rivers in "The Superstars" division. I personally think that McNabb, Eli and Ben Roethlisberger belong in the same category as Rivers and Brees -- but that's just me.

Knocking at the door: 1. Tony Romo

Romo led this category and Carson Palmer was No. 2. I'm a little surprised Palmer was this low. Do you guys think Romo should be ranked behind Kurt Warner and Matt Hasselbeck? That's what Dilfer thinks. Here's Dilfer's take on Romo: "Quickest release in the NFL … unparalleled ability to throw from multiple foot platforms, both intermediately and down the field … as artistic as any quarterback in the league, instinctively using all available resources (eye placement, shoulder nods, pump fakes, arm angles, you name it) … can make something out of nothing on a consistent basis … sometimes careless with the football, both in the pocket and through the air … limited big-game success."

Wow! After reading that first part, I'm sort of baffled by Dilfer putting Romo behind Hasselbeck. Yes, Hasselbeck's been to a Super Bowl. But who would you rather have as a starter right now?

GPI (Gotta Prove it): 3. Jason Campbell

Campbell's ranked behind Matt Schaub and Trent Edwards on the list. Here's what Dilfer said about Campbell: "Very good arm talent … hard worker who has embraced the cerebral part of game … still must demonstrate consistency in production."

Rehab Projects: 1. Michael Vick 2. David Carr

Vick comes in just ahead of Carr. Kyle Boller, Chris Simms and Vince Young were the players ranked immediately behind Vick and Carr.

Do Not Write Them Off: 2. Jon Kitna

Kitna checks in just behind Jeff Garcia and in front of Billy Volek

Maybe he was ranking QBs most like himself on that list ala McNabb and Eli.

Average QBs constantly bailed out by their defenses.

Romo is an elite thrower, his biggest problem was the turnovers.

The glitch has been fixed.....

How anyone can put big game failures like McNab and Hasselback above Romo is a mystery to me.

I do agree with his top 2- but have to put Rothburger above Brees and Rivers since he has made the big plays to win a SB which puts you in a higher category then those that have not made it there. What has Brees done more then Romo- win 1 playoff game? Rivers is very very good but then he has also been surrounded by as much offensive talent as anyone in the NFL. I would also put Palmer a little higher as well-not his fault he is on the bungles.

Manning
Brady
Rothurger
then you could throw a blanket over Brees Rivers Romo Warner
Then would come McFlabb and Eli and Palmer in a group as well

Eli Manning is the most overrated QB in the league this year. Every mediot has this guy listed as better than Romo but so far he hasn't proven it.

The Giants won a SB and Manning played well down the stretch but that was one magical season when their D-Line was AWESOME in the playoffs. The other 3 years that the Giants made the playoffs they went one-and-done.

In that magical season of 2007, Manning led the league in INTs with 20! (Tied with Kitna & Palmer) Oops! And he had only 23 TD passes, compared with Romo's 36, which was 2nd behind Brady's amazing 50 that year. Manning's QB rating was a pedestrian 73.9 in 2007, but his team won the SB anyway.

Bah! :bang2:

Sure Ben has an awesome resume. But if your picking QB's Romos better.
Peyton, Brady, M. Ryan, A-rod is who Id take over him.

I think Stafford is going to be elite too

Shame on you!! Letting facts get in the way of a rediculous love fest for McNabb and Eli. :D

I've liked Dilfer when I've seen him on TV. He just really laid a stinker with this analysis.

It's amazing that Mosley thinks Eli is elite because of his playoff run but thinks Matt Hasselbeck is overrated because of his. I'd take Hasselbeck (if healthy) over Eli in a heartbeat.

Interesting what he actually has to say about Manning, though. It's his calls at the line more than his passing that he gets credit for. That's pretty hard for a fan to evaluate fairly.

3. Eli Manning, New York Giants

Analysis: Proven winner who has become a great big-game quarterback … cerebral player … has huge responsibilities at the line of scrimmage, allowing the Giants to be very multiple on offense, paying huge dividends in the run game (almost every run they have is some sort of box-count run or is conditional on safety alignment or defensive spacing, with Manning getting the Giants into better running plays) … still shows inconsistency as a passer.

Not a fan of Eli, but I wouldn't want to bet money on Hasselbeck making it through a season in anything resembling a healthy condition.

And I'd rank Brees above 'em. The Saints aren't missing because of Drew Brees's play.

At least Dilfer lists reasons why he ranks them as he does. When I have seen him doing analysis on screen he's seemed very knowledgeable. I like this comparison, even if I disagree with some of the positions. Ranking QBs in their very different situations is always going to have a crapshoot bit to it, as every team situation will be different and have variable effects on their play.

Me, I'm just happy we got Romo.

It's really ridiculous. The difference between these two QBs is very apparent when you watch them play. One is ok and one is very good. I really wonder how many GMs would select Eli over Romo if they were starting a team today. I think a large majority take Romo, because he is clearly the better QB. If Crayton, Fasano, or Hochuli do their jobs in '07 (or even if the Pats DBs don't drop easy picks in the SB), nobody even mentions Eli in the same breath as Romo.

I'm sorry folks but Eli has proven it. He was a major part of their playoff push and eventuall superbowl win. I like Romo better and he is more exciting to watch but just because Eli plays for the Giants doesn't mean he isn't good. He is. Blind homerism is unbecoming.

Wow, give Eli the best running game in the league and a top 5 defense and he can win a lot of games. Impressive!
