Can't offer specifics on this, but Parcells has a particular belief/philosophy on signing other teams FA's. Not sure this applies to all teams or just teams with whom he has a working relationship, I.E. trades with. We would certainly qualify.

This goes back to us overpaying Davis after Payton tried to sign him for NO from us.

The philosophy has to do with I believe having an open dialog with certain teams about their players. FA's and RFA's.

The goal is to not inflate contracts of players the original team legitamately wants to resign.

Point being, Parcells wont try to steal Austin with an offer slightly higher than ours with some sort of poison pill.

If he signs him it will be with Jerry's OK. It will be a deal for significantly more money than we would pay a 3rd WR. It will be under the premise that Austin would be a starter and focal point of the Dolphin passing game.

Austin is worth more than a 2nd round tender because there are no WRs in this years draft who will fall to the 2nd round with Austin's speed and also and be good enough to start as the #3 WR. So Dallas has to decide if he is worth more than the 2nd round tender, and if not, then Dallas needs to act quick to sign him long-term right now.

If Jerry were smart, we'd qualify Austin at the highest tender, insuring we keep him. Cut TO, let Austin and Crayton battle for #2 WR spot. If Austin has a quality year you can then sign him long term and know what you have.

But Jerry isn't smart, so he'll keep 35 year old WR Owens, qualify Austin at the 2nd rd tender, watch as another team happily gives up the 2nd to get him, we'll get one so-so year out of TO, other team gets a productive WR with a lot of big play potential. We get a late 2nd rd pick, which could easily be the next Jacob Rogers. And we have a gaping hole next year and beyond at one WR spot.

:laugh2:

That's depressing.

Sheez. You make it all sound so pleasant. I can't wait to watch it unfold.

I think he's just referring to how we need to make a higher tender than lowest level -- the lowest level for say, Canty last year would have got a 4th if we didn't match, whereas the lowest tender for Austin nets nothing but the right to match. .

Canty was tagged with a 2nd round tag last year, and so will Miles this year.

I'd suggest the Cowboys to tag him with a 1st round pick ( only 600k difference ) to ensure that no team inserts a " poison pill " in an offer sheet, and negotiate with whomever is interested in him.

if we can get a second for austin it is a virtual crime not to take it.

yes, he is fast and yes he has potential but he guy has 18 career catches and can not stay healthy.

do i think anyone pays a second for him??? NOPE!

I am trying to think of the last WR to get traded for a 2nd round pick. Nothing comes to me off the top of my head but I am fairly certain they will have more than 18 catches.

Just going on memory, did Wes Welker get picked up by the Pats for a 2nd round pick? Not entirely sure . . . .

I would be very upset if he goes for a 2nd.

I just think Dallas knows what they have in him and it's as good as what most 2nds are going to be unless someone just gets real lucky.

I know he was tendered at r2 after 60+ catches that year and being the Phins leading WR.

yup... he was given up for the 28nd pick of the 2nd round.

Randy Moss was gathered for a r4.

sheesh... best WR corps in the league for a 2 and 4 is ridiculous.

I like Austin but 2nd round picks have real value. They are cheap players who scouts really like.

You have them under contract for a good while.

Its no guarantee you hit on them but you have the potential to hit way bigger than Miles Austin who was undrafted. If you are an NFL team that can turn that undrafted guy into a 2nd you do it. Especially with only 18 catches to his name over 3 seasons of football.

Right now you have guys like Sean Smith, Danny Beckwith, Delmas, Ron Brace and others ranked in that 2nd round area. Those guys imho would help this team more than Austin. I think all 3 could actually start here as a rookie.

But even more Dallas has a plethora of picks later on. Another seocnd and wow they have a loaded draft pool. Since they won't need 11-12 guys ont his team they can easily move up even into round 1 and grab a talent that would be off the table right now. OR they can move a second and third for a future first.

If we lose Austin it basically helps balance that RW trade as well. You spent a 1st and 3rd for a WR but then got back a 2nd because you had enough depth at the position.

We have two very good TE, three very good RBs and it is quite possible we throw a bit less next year. If so and we stay in 3 WR sets less do we really need a WR at 3.5 on the depth chart at the cost of a 2nd round pick??

If it was a high to mid second round pick, I would probably take it. But if it's a low 2nd round pick, that would be tougher for me to swallow.

I guess it depends on what the coaching staff really thinks of Austin. If they really think he can be a legitimate number 2, they should keep him.

I think he is as good or better than DeSean Jackson who was selected by the Eagles last year and he has a lot better size. He may also be faster. You have to remember that the second round has 32 picks in it and there is a lot of difference in the 33rd pick and the 64th pick. I'm not sure a team like the Dolphins who pick late wouldn't take him for a 2nd.

Austin is a high character player with immense physical tools. He's ready to be a No. 3 receiver for the Cowboys and he could easily become a No. 2 receiver for the Dolphins. Cowboys receivers Sam Hurd and Patrick Crayton hang on Terrell Owens' every word. To his credit, Austin didn't pick sides in the T.O.-Jason Witten dispute. He keeps his mouth shut and constantly works to get better.

how the HECK does he know? Is Matt in the locker room hanging out with Austin on the regular? gimmie a break!

Put the first round tender on Austin and you won't even have to worry about losing him. I love Austin and we need more recievers like this on the team.

this is called overrating your own guys.

desean jackson had 60+ catches for almost 1K receiving yards last year as a rookie.

austin may be a better guy and teammate but he is not a better player than jackson. its not even close quite honestly.

austin is fast and he is tall but he has nothing proven in the hands department or in route-running on anything but flys or posts.
