Matt, MNF guys seemed to be hinting pretty heavily that the Jets would be trading for a WR. What's your take? B. Marshall?
Mosley (12:02 PM)

I know I enjoyed watching Brad Smith on that sideline route last night. But yes, they need someone. They actually thought making a play on the Cowboys' Miles Austin via restricted free agency in the offseason. Marshall would make sense there.

Mike (Ellicott City, Md.)

How do you think the Skins o=line has looked so far in the preseason? I know its only 2 preseason but if they stay healthy they could end up having an average line. Your thoughts
Mosley (12:04 PM)

I've been watching a lot of their backup guys with great interest. Bridges looked really athletic to me at times, but then he made a couple of bone-headed mistakes. I think Randy Thomas could go out at any minute. I'm not convinced Rinehart would be ready to go, but he's looking a little better. Jason Campbell tells me that Heyer's been dominant at times in camp

Zorro (Arlington)

My fiance works for Arlington. We toured the stadium after the board went in and the first thing she said was, "punts are going to hit that." I laughed and assured her that the engineers would have known exactly how high a punt can go ... so what happened? Did Jerry know it was too low and say "screw it" because his ego wanted the size and the sightlines? This could not have been a surprise to him and the designers.
Mosley (12:05 PM)

Zorro, if only your wife had've left that in Jerry's stadium "comments" box. Could've saved everyone a lot of heartache -- and headlines. The 90-foot high board met NFL specs, so now Goodell's in a tougher spot than Jerry -- in my opinion.

Mal (Passaic, New Jerz) [via mobile]

Matty Ice, keep up the work playa. How much playing time will Vick get on thursday? Also, if the defense performs sub-par, should that be cause for me to start worrying?
Mosley (12:07 PM)

Mal, I think he might get a couple series -- depending on how long they are. I think three at the most. Andy Reid might shed some light on that in a little bit.

Xander (Philly)

Do the Commanders regret not going harder after Favre or Vick?
Mosley (12:08 PM)

I think they'd done enough damage to Jason Campbell's psyche by then. Favre was never a consideration and I'm not sure Dan Snyder had the stomach to deal with the potential Vick fallout. There are more protesters in the D.C. area than in Philly -- I'm told.

Bryon (ATL)

If the Bills are serious about letting Roscoe Parrish go, would the Cowboys be interested to improve their shaky return game? And should they be interested in the price is a 4th round draft choice or so? Thanks love the blog!
Mosley (12:09 PM)

I don't think will make a luxury signing like that. They have to find someone who's already on the roster. Maybe they'll finally give the role to Terence Newman full time.

Phil S. (NJ)

What's shaking, Matt? I'm concerned that the much-lauded Giants D-line depth is already falling apart. What are the chances that everyone (aside from poor Jay Alford) gets healthy by Week 2 or 3? Also - I can't believe I'm asking this, but who long snaps for the Giants now? I really need to get a life. Thanks!
Mosley (12:11 PM)

Good question on the backup snapper. If memory serves correct, I think Zak DeOssie can handle those duties. And I'm not overly worried about all the injuries. Giants are being careful with Canty. He'll be ready to roll at some point. And big Fred and Barry should be available as well. I'm not as worried as Coughlin right now.

Bryon (ATL)

I'd be really nervous with Newman back there - not becuase I don't trust him but because I'm concerned with him getting injured....also what do you think of the Octavien kids play the other night and can he help at OLB?
Mosley (12:12 PM)

Octavien brings a little jump off the edge. That's a very encouraging sign for this team. I think he'll be a good special teams player, although he missed a tackle against the Titans the other night.

Darrin (California)

Hey Matt, Do the skins have enough to be a top 3 defense this year ? And if so can they make some noise in the NFC East ?
Mosley (12:13 PM)

I think this team will be very solid against the run and much-improved in rushing the passer. But it will come down to whether they can cause turnovers. They didn't do that enough last season.

Darrin (California)

How have the 2nd year WRs D.Thomas and M kelly looked for the Commanders ? Are they ready to step up ?
Mosley (12:15 PM)

I really have been impressed with Kelly. Very mature kid who catches everything away from his body. I just like watching him play right now. Thomas is more explosive, but he's also more likely to blow an assignment.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

SA Express News said that McBriar told Jones a couple years ago that the screen should be at 100 feet based on tests they did in the Alamodome. NFL requirements aside, Jones knew but liked the view at 90 feet better than at 100 feet.
Mosley (12:18 PM)

I'm sure Jerry appreciates the feedback from McBriar, but probably not in the newspaper. Jerry's decision to hang it at 90-feet met the NFL's specifications, so who's fault is that?

Jared (Philly)

Predictions on #1 RB in NFC EAST
Mosley (12:18 PM)

1. Brandon Jacobs2. Brian Westbrook3. Clinton Portis4. Marion Barber5. Felix Jones

Jem (Westchester)

How do you think Portis and Westbrook will hold up this year?
Mosley (12:20 PM)

Portis has worked extremely hard to get his body ready for this season, but he takes a pounding every week. The Skins need either Marcus Mason or Dominique Dorsey to become a steady change-of-pace type player. I'm not sure Ladell Betts is that great of an alternative at this point.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

Well I don't think McBriar went running to the reporters - I assume the reporter was there and just remembered it happening. Good point about the NFL requirements though. Seems odd that this hasn't happened more often.
Tommy Dreamer (New York,NY)

Who steps in behind Brandon Jacobs in the Giants formidable running game, Ahmad Bradshaw, Danny Ware or Andre Brown?
Mosley (12:21 PM)

Wow, lots of RB questions all the sudden. Bradshaw's the No. 2 guy at this point. Danny Ware's making a strong move, though. Brown's out for the season.

Joey Gladstone (San Francisco,CA)

Can first-round pick Jeremy Maclin pass Kevin Curtis on the depth chart and match or even surpass the excellent rookie season DeSean Jackson enjoyed last year?
Mosley (12:22 PM)

I think it would be good for him to field a punt cleanly before we start talking about him starting. I don't think he'll make as much of an impact as Jackson did last season. Jackson was forced into the starting lineup due to injuries. That's probably not going to happen to Maclin.

Justin (St Paul)

How productive to you see Westbrook this season and do you think he plays all 16?
Mosley (12:23 PM)

I think he'll be extremely productive -- especially with someone like McCoy to give him a break at times. Westbrook will always miss a game or two on you, so I think he'll play in 14 games.

Charles (Dayton, Ohio)

Matt Do you really think that Felix Jones is the fifth best back in the division. Over Bradshaw with the G-Men?
Mosley (12:23 PM)

Yes, I think Jones is a more dynamic back than Bradshaw. Absolutely.

Al Borland (Detroit,MI)

Who emerges as the Giants starting wide receivers after the departures of both Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer?
Mosley (12:25 PM)

I think Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon will begin the season as the starters. Mario Manningham would be the third guy in the mix. The good news is that Hakeem Nicks appears to be turning it on late in camp.

Vincent (DC)

If Jason Campbell continues his poor play, how far into the regular season before the Skins give up on this experiment and move on? 5th year, and he still can't hit wide open WRs.
Mosley (12:25 PM)

They will give him every opportunity to succeed early in the season. And the schedule sets up nicely. He'll be fine. He went 1 of 7 in a preseason game. It's not the ideal, but it's not the end of the world.

Newt (Jacksonville)

What are the rumblings you hear about Chris Canty's hamstring tear? Might it jeopardize his season?
Mosley (12:26 PM)

No one has suggested to me that he'll be out for the season, but I do know how these things can linger. I've watched Canty play through injuries before, so I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.

Eric Love (Philly)

Matt the Eagles have lost Dawkins (via FA), Bradley (injury), and their JJ (illness) and the secondary looks like swiss cheese in 2 preseason games. Is it time to start worring about the D in Philly?
Mosley (12:28 PM)

I wouldn't reach for the panic button just yet. Jim Johnson's blitz packages are still in play. We're just not seeing a lot of them because it's the preseason. The secondary will look a lot better when the rush looks better. And keep watching the legend of FOKOU!

Chris Martin (Maryland)

After recovering from a recent hamstring injury it is said that Hakeem Nicks just had his best practice as a New York Giant, is it possible to see the same kind of productivity Desean Jackson gave the eagles last year, maybe more? Or is that a stretch?
Mosley (12:28 PM)

They won't ask him to do that much. That's a bit of a stretch in my mind.

carl raleigh nc [via mobile]

does dallas need a veteren corner like mccallister or mckenzie or do they have enough in the secondary
Mosley (12:30 PM)

Carl, I think the Cowboys are OK for now. If Scandrick, Newman and Jenkins can stay healthy, they should be in good shape. After that, it's a crapshoot. I think the Cowboys will wait until the final cut before signing a vet -- if that actually happens.

Jason (Calgary, AB)

So Reid says he doesn?t have any clue when Andrews will be ready. Andrews says he?ll be good by Week 1. Reid says the back problem isn?t as bad as they thought, Andrews says it?s worse than Reid lets on. I?m guessing Reid?s patience is real thin right now? Would it be so bad to get Runyan in as nothing other than a kick in the pants to SA?
Mosley (12:32 PM)

Runyan just got cleared to resume football activities yesterday. I think they'd like to figure where he is in his recovery before signing him.

Jacob (Houston, Tx)

Hey Matt - how do you see the three-headed monster of MB3/Jones/Choice panning out? Is Barber primed to return to the role of being more of a 3rd down/goal line back or is he gonna retain the feature back tag?
Mosley (12:33 PM)

I never really thought of Barber as a third-down/goal line guy when Julius Jones was here. He'll be the starter and he'll rotate a lot with Felix Jones and Tashard Choice.

Erico Suave (Columbus, OH)

Matt what do you think of the Eagle's Eldra Buckley. I liked what I saw so far and I think he will make the third slot over Booker. Gotta love the Westbrookesque size and the Assante locks! Seriously though think he looks like a keeper?
Mosley (12:33 PM)

I like the kid, but he better start securing the football. That's the easiest way to get yourself cut. Start putting the ball on the carpet.

Kerry (DC)

With Haynesworth and the rest of his supporting cast, does Orakpo have a chance for DROY? I think he's picking up the LB slot better than you thought he would and I like when they go into the psuedo 3-4 look.
Mosley (12:34 PM)

Yes, I have him penciled in already.

Celine Dion (Las Vegas,NV)

Which will be more detrimental to Tony Romo, his split with Terrell Owens or with Jessica Simpson?
Mosley (12:34 PM)

Celine, I think both transactions will help his career. Love your work in Vegas!

Rahim (New Jersey)

Hey Matt love your blogs and chats. Anyway I was wondering with the exception of missing a game or 2 a season why such a low fantasy spot for B. Jacobs who might lead the league in rushing and rushing td's? It's definitely possible. What do u think?
Mosley (12:36 PM)

Great back, but he doesn't churn out huge fantasy stats. He'll get you a lot of 4 and 5-yard runs that win football games. But Peterson and Williams will give you scores from anywhere on the field. I will do whatever it takes to land the great DeAngelo.

Jake (VA Beach)

Speaking of Manningham, Eli seems to be targeting him quite a bit. Has he regained some of his Michigan ability? And, can he hold off Nicks, Barden, et al, all year?
Mosley (12:37 PM)

He's matured a lot as a person and player. Running good routes and he's making a lot of plays in practice. I'd still like to see more of it in games.

Pete (NJ)

I have read a few articles which discuss how the Panthers are preparing/should be worried about the Eagles with Michael Vick. While most people I've discussed it with feel that Vick will be reinstated earlier than week six, I haven't heard anything about it being by week 1... Is the idea of Michael Vick on the field in Carolina a realistic possibility?
Mosley (12:38 PM)

It's entirely up to the commissioner, but it wouldn't surprise that much if Vick's allowed to come back in the first couple weeks. The man's served his time. If he's doing the right things, then he could get reinstated. The recent photos didn't help his cause, but it's not a dealbreaker or anything.

Darrin (California)

Hey Matt , do you think WR Marko Mitchell has a shot to make the Commanders roster ?
Mosley (12:38 PM)

Certainly. He's making plays in preseason games. I think you have to find the guy a spot.

Tyler Parker (Shelbyville,TN)

How much will the Giants miss Derrick Ward in the running game?
Mosley (12:39 PM)

He's a really good player, but so is Bradshaw. And Ware's coming on strong in the preseason.

Craig (VA)

Who has the toughest schedule this year in the beast?
Mosley (12:40 PM)

I think the Skins have the toughest finishing stretch, but it's not that bad overall. Cowboys' schedule sets up pretty nicely for them. I'd say the Eagles have the toughest schedule followed by the Giants. But I'm working off memory here. I don't have the skeds in front of me.

Kevin (Connecticut)

Do the Eagles love Eric Berry as much as me? I would love them if they traded up for him after they win the Super Bowl.
Mosley (12:40 PM)

He'll provide good depth. Demps is your starter.

Matt (Philly)

So you think Bradshaw and Ware will replace Ward's 1300 yards of production and 40 catches? I know you really love the Giants, but you are making an awful lot of leaps this year about them. You think Eli will do 26/8 TD/INT without Burress or Toomer, and you think the running game won't miss a beat without the most productive back from last year? Isn't that a lot???
Mosley (12:43 PM)

you have to improve in other areas. Beckum's going to end up helping more than some of you think and Boss is ready to reach the new level, which means seven or eight touchdown catches. Barden's beast in the red zone. You don't necessarily replace Ward straight up, but Bradshaw and Ware have the talent to get the job done. What did Manning have last year? 23 and 10. I think 26 and 8 is reasonable. It's not Plax was tearing it up stats-wise last season.

Luis (Santa Barbara, CA)

Matt, loved your article on Plax's future (or potential lack thereof) in the NFL. What do you think we'll learn from tomorrow's interview on E:60? Have you had a chance to speak with anybody in his inner circle?
Mosley (12:44 PM)

One of the problem's is that Burress didn't let people into his inner circle. And I'm not talking about reporters. The Giants reached out to him many times to sort of help manage his life and career. He rebuffed them almost every time.

Kevin (Connecticut)

What do you expect from Brent Celek this season? He is the only capable TE on the Eagles' roster.
Mosley (12:46 PM)

I think he's on his way to becoming a very solid player in the division. He'll get overshadowed by the likes of Witten and Cooley, but Celek could definitely end up with about 600 yards and five or six touchdowns. He's a highly intelligent player who has sort of sneaky athletic ability.

RAY GORDON REID ( BATON ROUGE LOUISIANA 708O3)

QUESTION TO MATT MOSLEY AT 12.55 HI MAT MOSLEY WHICH NFC EAST TEAM NFL OPENING DAY HOME GAME YOU GONNABE AT
Mosley (12:47 PM)

Love the all caps look. I'll be at the Skins-Giants matchup at Giants Stadium. Two Beast teams in one place is tough to pass up.

Joe (Gaithersburg, MD)

Matt, based on what I've seen and read, my two biggest concerns for the 'Skins at this point are Special Teams/coverage and the secondary, particularly covering backs and TE's coming out of the backfield. Do you think this is a product of not scheming for the games, or should I be worried? Thanks; you rock!
Mosley (12:48 PM)

Never too early to get worried. I think you've been watching too much of Tryon out there. Young guys like Orakpo are only going to get better in coverage, but there will be a learning curve. Trust in Horton and Landry to get everyone in the right spots.

Steve (LI)

What is the deal with Canty and Ross? Is Canty done for the season? Garafolo said today he was on the practice field this AM, with no pads....what does that mean exactly?
Mosley (12:50 PM)

I haven't heard anything about Canty being out for the season. I just think they're being cautious. Ross will be ready for the season. Giants simply trying to stay ahead of these injuries. Ross is one of those quick-twitch guys like Terence Newman. You have to really watch those injuries.

Jason (Calgary, AB)

Any thoughts on Tony Curtis, the ex-cowboy just signed by Philly?
Mosley (12:52 PM)

Yeah, I noticed the Curtis signing. He's one of those guys with a huge frame and he's pretty athletic for a big man. But the tight end situation in Dallas was always too crowded. He never really made his mark. I just didn't think he brought much passion to the field. There's a kid named Rodney Hannah with the Cowboys who could end up helping some team. I think he'll be better than Curtis. Right now, Curtis is the more polished player, though.

Mick (Pittsburgh)

Matt, will there be more focus on Jim Johnson passing away after a few weeks in the season or do you think Sean McDermott will have the Eagles "D" back to form from last year?
Mosley (12:53 PM)

The Eagles aren't going to let Jason Witten and Chris Cooley get in one-on-one coverage with Joe Mays or Gaither. Don't worry.

BOSSMAN (Beverly Hills, CA)

Is Demarcus Ware the best defender in the NFL?
Mosley (12:53 PM)

yep

Kevin (Toms River, NJ)

Matt, do you see the Giants making any moves before the season starts?
Mosley (12:54 PM)

I don't see a lot happening on that front. But don't let Coughlin read this. He thinks we've played up the depth angle too much on the Beast blog.

Jared (Charleston)

thoughts on Roy E Williams?
Shawn D (Las Colinas)

Matt, I'm sitting here looking at the state of the art studios in Las Colinas and can't wait to hear you on GAC today. What happens to the Cowboys if Ware or Spencer goes down? They have no one behind those guys. And veterans out there that might be available after final cuts?
Mosley (12:57 PM)

Dodge, it's so nice to hear from you -- especially when you're busy planning a radio show. I think the Cowboys drafted a lot of players to create some depth behind Spencer and Ware. If Victor Butler can keep making progress and even Stevie Octavien, you could create some depth. There's not a lot of depth on this team, though. I'll give you that.

Mark (Wilkes-Barre PA)

Hey Matt, love the blog. Who do you think makes the cut? Stanback or Ogletree?
Mosley (12:57 PM)

Ogletree's making the team. Romo LOVES him.

Chris (Delaware)

Wondering if Marshall could land in Philly....
Mosley (12:57 PM)

never say never, but nope

BOSSMAN (Beverly Hills, CA)

What do you think the NFL/Cowboys will agree to do with the new scoreboard?
Mosley (12:59 PM)

I think the commish is in a really tough spot. The NFL signed off on the scoreboard's specs. It will apparently cost Jerry millions to raise it on a permanent basis. I think the two sides will reach a "private" agreement where the NFL helps fund the raising of the board. Otherwise, you have a real mess on your hands. If Jones didn't do anything wrong here, how are you going to make him put up a few million?

Matt (Philly)

Who is the odd man out in the Phillly WR race? Curtis, Baskett, Brown or Gibson? Jackson, Avant and Maclin are guaranteed spots.
Mosley (1:00 PM)

Curtis is guaranteed as well. I think Baskett and Brown are in the most trouble. I'd hate to see them cut Gibson. He's been really, really good in camp.

Steve (LI)

How worried should one be about the Giants performance vs the Bears saturday?
Mosley (1:02 PM)

Steve, you get the last question. I think the Giants will bounce back with a nice performance. The Bears actually did them a favor, which is what Justin Tuck basically said after the 17-3 loss. You guys are the absolute best. This was a late-arriving crowd, but by the end, we were rolling. Thanks for your time.

If the Bills let Parrish go Dallas would be foolish not to sign him... Punt returners are undervalued in the NFL.

If Stanback is cut, who will be our other kickoff returner (next to Austin)?

dont know how they'd justify keeping 6 WR's, and I certainly would hate to see us lose Ogletree for a guy who can only return punts...Parrish isnt a better WR than any of the top 4, and maybe not even the top 5 on our roster right now. If they got him, they'd be keeping 5 WR's active on game day, and thats highly unlikely IMO.

So far they have been using a single KR back there.

Yeah, barring injury, I'm sure Felix will be the regular guy...

But one thing I noticed at the game is that we ran formations with basically one returner only, not the two you so often see. Guess Joe D just expects the single returner to sprint over and catch it if it's to the sideline.

Roscoe Parrish fits an immediate void at PR - agreed. More importantly on the other hand, with the team keeping 3Qbs and 2kickers, there is no room for him on this team.

What is Ogletree going to do in games? Doubt he even touches the field on offense in the regular season. Roscoe at least will contribute in a big way.

There's lots of teams that have a guy that just specializes in punts and KR. Figurs,Cribbs,Higgins, the dude from Tampa(I forgot his name) and Hester in the first few years of his career.

It's something to be concerned about and your acting like it's a wasteful spot on the roster. It can win and lose you some games. That's all I'm saying. Ogletree will most likely not contribute in the regular season. Give it to a guy that will.

Well, currently we're only running one kick returner. It's a funky-looking return formation due to the new kickoff rules.

Edit: About an hour late on that one.

Mosley (12:33 PM)

I never really thought of Barber as a third-down/goal line guy when Julius Jones was here.

Because of all the touchdowns Julius Jones was not scoring?

Marion Barber has 36 touchdowns in 4 years, that kind of makes me think happy thoughts about him in a goal line role.

I think Mosley is a chump. But I think what he means here is that he never pigeon holed Barber into that particular role and saw him as a more overall back

I bet McGee goes to IR with his knee, leaving us with 2 QB's. Extra spot goes to either a 6th WR or LB.

Why are people laughing at Brandon Jacobs being number 1? Honestly, to me, other than Peterson, he's the back I'd fear facing most in the league.

We tackle Derrick Ward one yard from the LOS and it's a one or two yard gain. We do the same thing for Jacobs and he gains 5 yards if he isn't dancing. I freaking hate that. :(

Yea, why not deactivate Ogletree and let Parrish return kicks? Hes at best the 9th or 10th option. Or deactivate Mcgee or Folk.....

Roscoe wouldnt even need to break one, just a 12-14 yard avg. would suffice. They punt from the 30, Roscoe catches it at our 25, takes it to 35-40 and were a few first downs from at least a FG.

Why did I just explain how field position works? Whatever, I want Roscoe....

A guy w/ no hands, who tippy-toes? Fear him over DeAngelo, Turner, Chris Johnson, Westbrook?

Every RB looks good for the Giants, they have a great line.

Id go:
1. Westbrook -Until proven otherwise
2. Felix
3. Portis
4. Barber/Bradshaw
5. Jacobs- Hes going to get injured.... Be in and out of the lineup. Doubtful every other week. Hell be crying about his hammy or something all year

Maybe because Westbrook has literally double the yardage that Jacobs has over the past three years?
