Brooking defends Phillips' 'Victory Monday'

IRVING -- Inside linebacker Keith Brooking was taken aback by media questions regarding the Cowboys day off Monday.

Following Sunday's victory over Atlanta, coach Wade Phillips gave his players a 'Victory Monday.' However, Phillips said 45 players showed up at Valley Ranch to work out, get medical treatment and watch film.

Phillips said he was pleased with the professional behavior of his players.

Several other players voiced the same thing, but Brooking and return man Allen Rossum said it was unfair for the media to get on Phillips for giving his players an off-day.

Brooking said he's had about 40 'Victory Mondays' in his career and that it's a normal practice.

"Oh yeah, especially in the middle part of the year and the latter part of the year," said Brooking, a 12-year veteran. "This time of the year is when you start getting those types of days as a football team. That was very common."

Brooking was told by reporters that Phillips has been labeled soft, and he dismissed that notion.

What the hell is going on around here?

I'm so confused. Couple weeks ago I was ready to bash Wade and Garrett's heads in and now they're just.. doing their jobs. Really well, mind you.

Not going to say I was wrong, but I was definitely worried because we have notoriously gotten out to hot starts under Wade and now maybe the opposite could come true? We've got a tough schedule, but maybe we can start a little slow and finish strong?

Either way, I do like the direction this team is headed. Everything I complained about 2 weeks ago about Jason Garrett, he has done a 180 and has impressed me quite a bit the past 2 weeks.

For what it's worth, I feel like I am part of the reason Miles is a Cowboy. See, Monmouth University is walking distance from my house... a 2 minute walk tops. I watched every home collegic game Miles ever played, and he tore it up. When I heard about Miles' pro day, I nearly shed a tear. My dad pointed out Gaine, I went over and told him I was a huge 'Boys fan, and that I thought Miles Austin was going to be a superstar in the NFL. Now-- I was in 8th grade at that point, so he obviously didn't take me seriously. But I talked him up, reeled off his stats, and told him of his heroics. Miles is my hero, has been since 5th grade and will be until he retires. So to think that I MIGHT have had the littlest connection between him and the Cowboys, (which almost 100% isn't the case), I feel accomplished.
good story. thanks for sharing

Mosley conveniently left out the fact that despite "Victory Monday" about 45 of the 53 showed up to watch film and work out.

Huh? He gave Wade a pass for his laissez-faire approach and openly mocked the colleague who was counting cars.

Obviously, Mosely doesn't know very much about Dick Vermeil then.

He ran absolutely brutal camps with the Rams when he first took over. He had to scale it back in his third year after the players nearly revolted. They responded well to the downgear and started winning thereafter.

But just because he wears his emotions on his sleeves and has cried doesn't make him a weak-wristed pushover by any means.

I was gonna post the same thing when I read the column. Vermeil is a player's coach until the first and last whistle blows. In between, he's a dictator.

as it should be.
