Dallas Cowboys

Key additions: LB Anthony Spencer (franchised), LB Justin Durant, C Phil Costa (re-signed)
Key losses: LB Victor Butler, TE John Phillips, LB Dan Connor, S Gerald Sensabaugh

Analysis: Dallas was penalized for violating salary-cap rules, which has obviously limited the Cowboys' ability to enhance their roster. And although Spencer should fit as a defensive end in a wide alignment in Dallas' new 4-3 defense, he, too, was very expensive to retain via the franchise tag. The Cowboys simply did not have any money to spend, and, therefore, there just isn't much to analyze here. However, after locking up Tony Romo to a huge long-term deal, some signings could be coming soon. Still, Dallas could really use a big-time draft class.

Grade: C-

Can't really give an accurate grade with so little movement. Durant could end up being a nice player for us.

get a C- for being unjustly denied the ability to spend on FAs? The act like Spencer is the only move we have made or not made. I don't know what grade i would give: we did (are doing? is it over?) about as well asw we could.

They need at least one quality FA OL or this free agency period will be yet another wasted opportunity. Just one quality OL pickup and that C- could become a B.

Brandon Moore or Eric Winston changes that grade dramatically. Not like grades matter before FA is even over.

I feel confident that Spencer will have the franchise tag removed and a contract signed. As was mentioned in another thread by waiting until after the draft the FA market becomes more affordable.

Is Allen penciled in as a starter at safety?

Dear Lord, no. If so, you can prep for another year of missing the postseason.

#$ll no! He is the backup plan in case Dallas does not draft a legit starter and Johnson pulls a hammy doing yoga. The key is too keep McCray (RFA) off the field at all cost on defense! :p:

I think i'd rather see McCray than Allen, provided we have a rangy safety along side him.

Allen at least has knowledge of the system.

Then he's come to the right place! ;)

That was my first reaction to the signing actually.. he'll fit right in here. lol

I believe Allen to be an insurance policy if either (or both) of our injury boys can't go...

People on this board need to stop acting like Will Allen was brought in to be the starter. It is quite obvious that he signed to be a backup, ST and depth player for the team. If the team wanted a starter they would of grabbed Huff.

This just says that the team plans on grabbing a safety in the first 3 rounds, and to use Allen as a backup....

Didn't this guy get benched by Kiffin?

You look at his time as a starter, he looks to have played well for part of a year to earn a starting spot and then played the following year and did very little. Next season Tampa went to someone else at that position and the guy doesn't look to have really played at all under Kiffin after that one starting season.

Grading when free agency isn't over is like grading the draft when it's still the 4th round.
