ESPN NFCE: Another vote for a Cowboys rebound...John Clayton

The "Hot Button" question on our site right now is, "Which team that finished under .500 in 201o will make the playoffs in 2011?" Mike Sando picks the Rams, who only needed to win eight games last year to make it, but didn't. John Clayton picks the Cowboys.

Now, I know, I know... everybody's going to say that everybody always picks the Cowboys and they always disappoint. We've been over that ground and we'll be over it again. I side with John here, and you already knew that, but if your opinion is different you're going to think we're nuts. Fine. Way it goes.

I'm a little more interested in this piece of John's rationale, where he says the fact that the Cowboys and the rest of the NFC East teams are scheduled to play the NFC West in 2011 is a reason to expect them to win more games:

The easiest team to pick to go from losers in 2010 to winners in 2011 is the Dallas Cowboys. The star will once again be sparkling on the Cowboys' helmets.

That's not to say the Cowboys are a guaranteed playoff team. They still have to get past the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, but the stage is set for them to bounce back from a 6-10 season.

The key is the return of quarterback Tony Romo.

People who cover the NFL see the talent on the team, myself I think it is easy to see the talent on this team but until they learn to play as a team they will continue to under achieve. My hope if Garrett can instill this into this group of players. No doubt we have some holes but every team out there has holes.

lazy reporting, getting annoying. Come on, do something more indepth. Report how we might see something in Seattle this year or the Rams, or some other team that might make good strides and you can say "Look, i did some work".

Sure Dallas is the easy team to scream that because on paper it looks like we solved our problems, but we also kept some problems so 2011 can go down as fast as 2010 if we really work hard at it as we've tried to do year in and year out.

Don't have much use for 'the Professor' but I think he makes a good case.

If Rob Ryan can work some magic and get the defense playing close to the league average, we should be in good shape.

And playing the quarterback-starved NFC West is a nice plus as well.

If we can get something resembling a training camp, I think Garrett can get this team prepared and practicing significantly better than his predecessor ever did.

Coupled with accountability which was also missing, and I think the 2011 Cowboys could be the team we thought we'd be seeing in 2010.

There will be no "going down as fast as 2010" as you just implied due to Jason Garrett and his staff. The star on the helmet will be shining and our green pants will be shimmering! Mark it down!

In recent history, the Cowboys have done well when expectations have been low. And, given their 6-10 finish last season, there should be numerous vocal doubters going into next season. It's only when expectations are ratcheted up that they fail spectacularly.

To be fair, they haven't done much, regardless of their pre-season expectations, for a long time.

Winning the east 2 out of the last 4 season is not exactly nothing. Granted it did not end well hopefully Garrett can push this team over the top.

lets remember, we've kept a few coaches on this team that have yet to prove why they should have been hired in the first place.
