ESPN: Possible Cowboys FA targets

I would rather have Albert than Vollmer.
Also I would live to get Byrd and Levitre.
Other FAs I want are
Slauson
Knighton
Desmond Bryant

Wes Welker or Dwayne Bowe would be nice additions.

I would be happy with any of the above, I know we cannot get them all.

^This.

Slauson - The Jets GM is trying to force the coaches to replace Slauson with the player he drafted. This takes the Jets out of the bidding. Slauson played for Callahan at both Nebraska and with the Jets. He should know Callahan's Zone Blocking System better than anybody.

Knighton - He wants to be a starter. The Jags want faster DTs. That take the Jags out of the bidding.

Desmond Bryant - He is playing in a 4-3, but seems like a better fit in a 3-4; although the Raiders say they're going to be "multiple". Bryant is currently starting due to an injury to Seymour; otherwise, he is the 3rd option behind Seymour and Tommy Kelly. If they keep Kelly, then Bryant probably leaves.

Id take byrd over either of our safeties. We obviously were to enthrall with our safties since we draft one a year ago. Church is slow and sensy is good one outta every 3 games. Getting one like byrd would put our defense over the top. As far as our oline we went cheap last year and fixed nothing. HOPEFULLY even steven and Jerry can see a upgrade/overhaul is the single biggest need on this team. As far as jake Long, has he been beat up for two years or has a injury happened to him that has changed his game?

The OL will never be better unless we can draft and develop guys. You just can't rely on FA signings year after year. Of course, that means using 1st and 2nd rounders on OL and doing that with greater frequency. It means using more mid round picks on OL. You do that for 3-4 years in a row and you end up with a few long term guys that can lock down a position for years.

The legendary 90's OL only had 2 drafted guys playing together at any one time. And none of them were 1st round picks. Cowboys (like most successful) teams were great at combining draft picks, trades and FAs to create success. And almost every single one of those players went on to be pro bowlers (not necessarily with the Cowboys).

Draft Picks
Kevin Gogan (8th)
Mark Stepnoski (3rd)
Erik Williams (3rd)
Larry Allen (2nd)
Ron Stone (4th)

Trades
John Gesek* (10th)

Free Agents
Nate Newton
Mark Tuinei
Ray Donaldson (2nd)
Derek Kennard (2nd Supplement Draft)

*no pro bowls

Every other player above achieved at least 3 pro bowls. Cowboys had success with D players who eventually switched to OL (Newton, Tuinei and Stone).

I agree 100%. The dude is a beast and will get better with Cowboys running the 4-3.

If the Cowboys constantly run the 4-3 he could possibly have over double sack season along with Demarcus Ware, but I believe the Cowboys need to start invest in other pass-rushers and go with the 4-3.

You are not making any point at all.

Newton was an undrafted free agent. So was Tuinei.

Donaldson was a guy we convinced not to retire.

Kennard was 32, fat, and unwanted elsewhere.

These are not the sort of signings people on this board are talking about.

I don't want another year of sensabaugh. Enough is enough

I do find it unbelievable that some on this site think we are 'fine' as at safety, it really does show that everyone watches different things on Sunday. Sensy is the most non-physical presence you could ever have on your backend, and as for turnovers he is non-existent. Then we should base next year on Church coming off the most horrible injury for a DB, an Achilles.

If you want game changing plays on D, then we have to get better safety play, no way around it or teams will continue to pick on them week after week.

your point is that the Cowboys have to draft OL with 1st and 2nd round picks to have a successful OL. YOU are the one stating that the only way to build a successful OL is by expending as many picks as possible on the OL.

I am telling you that many teams, not just the Cowboys, have been successful by using ALL the resources available to them: draft, trade and FA

You cannot place your eggs in one basket. Not only does it make poor business sense but there is no precedence to support your claim. And Donaldson was a SIX time pro bowler. His last 2 were with the Cowboys. So your one foot in the grave description is BS.

Both Gogan and Ron Stone went on to have multiple pro bowls with other teams when signed away in FA. Only a fool does not use ALL of his resources to improve. A young vet OL like Slauson or Albert make sense in this era of FA. But so does a proven and still productive multiple pro bowler like Brian Waters.

No free sucks and so does Andre smith, and after the few choice words Than had with him i doubt Dallas will want him.

Brendon Albert would ne a perfect RT for us, young and can move. I doubt KC lets him walk tjough. Looks like we will have to go draft for a RT.

Kansas City picked up Eric Winston last year in free agency last year. They drafted Jeff Allen in the second who is playing guard for them but could play tackle. For the past few games Albert has been hurt and they are playing Donald Stephenson their third rounder at left tackle. They may let Albert go and try to find help at qb and defensive line.

They are a weird team. They have 5 first rounders in their front seven plus just Houston who is a double digit sack guy. A big time corner Eric berry at safety Jamal Charles and two first round wide outs. Their quarterback play is so bad it's not funny. Plus their two first round defensive ends are about like Spears.

I can see them letting Albert go and getting a qb and a slot receiver.

If we got Albert, he would want to be LT. They get paid more. Somebody else will offer him LT money. Isn't he a top 5 LT in the league right now?

getting ANY starting caliber player at a position of need in FA will be big for us and put us in great shape heading to the draft. Fill two need positions with starting FAs and we have a ton of flexibility heading to the draft.
I have to think we re-sign Spencer or franchise him though and that will cost us pretty big.
FA targets: S, OL, DL....maybe RB.

I don't think he will get Clady money or even Long money. We are paying Free in the range of what Albert will cost. Free is doubly bad He is playing losing football and is getting paid very well. If we can get Albert in the 8 million range then that would be great. We could then draft an inside guy in the top 3 rounds and get down the road.

Bushrod is going to come free as well. The Saints have a historically bad defense and at in worse cap shape than us. Albert may not come free. If I were the chiefs I'd keep Albert and jettison Winston. They have a gob of cap room no quarterback and have only recovered about 25% of fumbles while losing 60%. Other than bad qb play their record is an anomaly.

the chiefs actually have a good number of pieces to be a good team; just that the ones they DON'T have killed them this year

we desperately need a safety almost as much as we need a right tackle.

Byrd or Vollmer work for me. I don't think we'll be that big in FA. Especially if we resign Spencer.

I don't think they will be that active either....remember they take another 5 million hit on the cap from the NFL ot did they do the entire 10 million last year.....either way they were cheated...

I understand Albert would likely command a contract similar to that of Free, but we will also be paying Free not to play for us. If we could make a clean break from Free and not owe him anymore money, sure. But from what I understand, it will be a substantial cap hit to cut him and we have other pressing needs. Also, I stated before that Albert would probably prefer to play LT. Would the line play better with Albert at LT and Smith at RT or vice versa?

Gholston is Roy Williams with coverage skills. I'd take him over byrd
