I don’t put a ton of stock in “power rankings” before a seasons starts because it’s all paper at this point. But I know many Cowboys fans do so I thought I would share this as we approach the season. I can’t link it because it’s ESPN+ but I can at least mention what they said.

ESPN’s Top Ten Preseason Power Rankings:
  1. Kansas City- with the best player in the NFL (Mahomes) and an all time great offensive coach in Andy Reid, the chiefs should be #1. The Chris Jones holdout is a problem but I’ll be shocked if isn’t worked out soon.
  2. Filly eaglets- they remain loaded at several positions but no NFC East winner has repeated in nearly 20 years. I’m skeptical.
  3. Buffalo- Josh Allen is good but he throws too many picks.
  4. Cincinnati- if Joe Burrow is healthy they will be very tough.
  5. Miami- great defense on paper, but Tua although good last year is is still a health question mark.
  6. Cowboys- ESPN says adding Gilmore and Cooks makes us better. They also say we are much closer to Filly than last year. I agree. The OL starters are good but no depth.
  7. San Fran- their OL has questions but ESPN says Shanahan can get the most out of an offense. Surprised ESPN has them this low.
  8. LA Chargers- they have the talented QB Herbert but so far has not materialized in a playoff win. ESPN apparently thinks they might do that this year.
  9. Cleveland- This ranking surprises me. ESPN thinks a lot more of this roster than I do. DeShaun Watson has talent but not sure he’s good enough to make this team a top ten team.
  10. NY Jets- I would have ranked them higher than Cle and higher than 10. Rodgers I’d diminished but he’s still good. And the jets have a pretty good D. If Rodgers upgrades their offense they could be really good.
Like I said at the start, I don’t put a lot of stock in these rankings before we’ve seen a single team play a down of meaningful football yet.The NFL of late is a year to year thing. A great team one year doesn’t mean it is the next. Starting next weekend we will begin the process of separating the contenders from the pretenders.

Thoughts?
I put Cowboys ahead of Miami. SF also goes ahead of the Cowboys until proven otherwise.

Don't understand the endless media love affair with the Eagles.

Fact- the Cowboys are 8-3 in their past 11 games with Philly. And while one of the wins was against Gardner Minshew last year, I don't think the Eagles are giving back beating Cooper Rush so it evens out.
Their roster is ridiculous and thier young QB just had a MVP season. What is it that you dont understand?

I understand completely. I also understand that if the Cowboys lost some starters and both coordinators like the Eagles did the media would be predicting doom and gloom.

Sorry No.

Might want to check who played qb vs your team last year and the fortunate times your opponent had big injuries.
i’m not even sure what you’re saying. are you talking about the cowboys? what does that have to do with why the eagles are overrated?

I'm kinda at the point with this team where I put them in the middle of the pack with everyone else going in to game 1, they lose a game, then they're 0-1; they win, they're back in the middle of the pack at 1-1; win another one and they're in the 2-1 bracket. I'm just going to enjoy the season. They are what their record says they are. No pressure. If they win, they win. But I'm at the point where I say show me the money... and I'm not crowning you jack.

Overall, I like what the team is doing. I personally would have spent my 3 or 4th round this year drafting a QB. If Trey Lance works out, which I think he'll eventually be forced on us Quincy Carter-style, then I think it pays off. But I just like the idea of drafting your own guy. Maybe Trey Lance comes in and backs us up and plays lights out in the RPO with Pollard and Deuce, and we trounce the Eagles at their own game, Texas Coast-style.

On the other hand, I see players like Will Grier give me pause. Did we just let a decent player get away. I would have written Cooper Rush off for less last season, and he's still here. Anyway, I probably just like too many players and have a harder time discriminating against them as some, particularly when we finally have depth. I would like to see them fill some holes there, as we move along and maybe bring in some veteran depth on the offensive line.

Honestly, I think you have to put philly in the top 3 just because of how they did last year. It just kills me to say that but until proven otherwise, the eagles are the team to beat in our division and in the NFC.

If Hurts is healthy, they are a really good team. jmho

The top 6 teams in the NFL are obvious. They are the top 3 teams in each conference. In alphabetical order:
  • Buffalo Bills
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Dallas Cowboys
  • Kansas City Chiefs
  • Philadelphia Eagles
  • San Francisco 49ers
All other teams in the NFL are chasing these 6 teams.
