Charles Davis was on Dallas' local ESPN radio feed today discussing the Cowboys 1st round pick.

He was asked to discuss the three most obvious needs and how they fit with that pick.
Most of this is stuff we all know and he's just one voice, but I'm posting it anyway for any added angles.

Guard
Davis says what most of us know, that the 18th slot could be right on the edge of getting an OG. But he thinks there are only two worth taking there.
Warmack and Cooper...again no news there. He said the drop off is stark after that and if they're gone, then it's best to wait unti the the 2nd round..maybe even trade up in the 2nd. I got the impression he did not like out odds of getting an OG in Rd 1.

Tackle
He likes Fluker for Dallas as a RT solution if the Cowboys chose to go in that direction. He also thought he'd probably be there at 18. I'm assuming he thinks Joeckel, Fisher, and Lane will be gone.

Safety
He says if Vacarro is there, he is worth it....again, if we wanted to go with a safety in Rd1. He says he loves him live and on tape and would not be concerned about the combine 40 time. He also said that he heard Vacarro had bad muscle cramps before running but powered throwing it anyway and deserves kudos.

DE
He said DE is real confusing this year for a lot of teams due to where guys will fit. He said Werner is a wildcard; great player and motor but not a truly great pash-rusher. Because of this Jax may pass on him at 2 and he could fall far after that. Teams are loving Dion Jordan. Some are in love with Ansah too...so don't expect them to be there.

DT
The Lotuelei situation is causing ripples. He thinks Floyd has risen enough that he'll be gone by 18.
He thinks we have a shot at Richardson and that he'd be great for us if there at 18.

No mention whatsoever of WRs, RBs, QBs, or CBs. Fine with me.

In the end, it's sounding more and more like the 18th spot could be dicey value-wise. If that happens, to maximize value, we may have to move a few slots one way or the other.

One thing to remember is that there are maybe 30-35 different players that have been picked to go before pick 18. Since only 17 will actually be taken, patience may still win the day.

My top hopeful choices at 18 are:

Warmack or Cooper
L. Johnson
Richardson
Vacarro

In that order. If all are gone, along with Floyd, then I hope we trade back.

I see no good reason to trade up in this draft.
I don't think we can afford it.
Hope to keep all of our picks this time around.

I'd never say never though.

small trade down (so we get and extra 4th or 3rd)

vaccaro + 3rd or 4th

bigger trade down (so we get an extra 2nd or so)

I like the thought process. Slot your targets to equal value.

In this case you're saying "If no Richardson (for example) then take Fluker or vaccarro PLUS an extra 3rd or 4th rounder".

I've been thinking all along that Kawaan Short will continue to move closer to the 18th pick as the Draft continues to get closer. He might be our last chance, and I think a good one, to get a top DL in this years draft. Possibly the last of the top tier Dlinemen.

I would trade down

...but the problem is that JJ can't be trusted to do that. He just doesn't draft well enough. My wish list:

1)Warmack....won't be there
2) Cooper...see WArmack
3) Johnson...I think he can project to be a Joe Staley like talent
4)Richardson...don't know if we can trust him: seems a little immature
5) Fluker....he's solid and if by CHANCE he doesn't pan out at RT he can MASH people at guard a la a young Leonard Davis.

...I watched him about 8 times on TV while playing for Purdue and the 'motor' questions are legit. He would just disappear for long stretches. I think he'd be a solid pick at 18 in the 3rd round. I mean, the guy can really play, when he WANTS to but we arent' in a position to risk that in the first 2 rounds IMO.

I would love that pick if he were to fall there but I doubt he will.

I'd love it, too. Unlikely.

But, one way or another, there are going to be a handful of top-10 projected players in somebody's estimation sliding to 18. I don't remember a year that was this flat in the top 25 or so picks. It's going to make the draft a lot of fun, I hope, with people more willing to move around with so little consensus in the first round.

I've been thinking about this for a while now.

I can see him falling because of lack of great measureables and all that and guys like Ansah, Lane Johnson rising in his place.

If he falls, he's my pick, that's for sure.

I think you're right. Hope so anyway.
I wonder if some of the higher up picks won't be sellers at a discount?
