Highly coveted tailback Michael Turner, the backup to San Diego star LaDainian Tomlinson and the subject of considerable trade discussion over the past two months, has re-signed with the Chargers, inking his one-year restricted free agent qualifying offer.

The qualifying offer, for the highest level permitted by the league, is worth $2.35 million for the 2007 season. Agent James "Bus" Cook confirmed that Turner had re-signed.

<snip>

There remains a chance that Turner could be traded during the draft and the consensus in the league is that San Diego will continue to entertain offers on the first day of the lottery. There are several teams in desperate need of a quality tailback and the position isn't a particularly deep one in the draft.

Technically, a trade for Turner might be facilitated now that he has signed the one-year deal with the Chargers, because a player must be under contract to be dealt. But any franchise that acquired Turner would want him to sign an extension as part of the deal, because they would not want to lose him in free agency next spring.

must have been an awkward signing meeting, both sides know that he is signing with the sole intent of being traded.

Get a trade done Mr. Jones.....

the only trade they should even think about for a new RB is the guy for OU

anything else is a total waste of time...especially trading for some other teams backup who isnt even as good as our two current guys

Some other team's backup? Every running back in the league would be the backup in San Diego.

I think that Turner will gain anywhere between 1,400 and 1,500 yards next year. He is that good.

That doesn't leave many for LT. :p:

I think Turner's solid, but they're crazy to think they'd get 1st and 3rd round picks for him.

I don't believe that's what they're thinking, they're slapping the high tag on him so it makes it harder for teams to take him away, it would give them more time to negotiate the best comp in a trade instead of just having 12 days to match an offer sheet

Is Turner that good?
STATS tracks broken tackles. Last year, Michael Turner broke an amazing 22 tackles in only 80 carries, which comes out to a broken tackle on an incredible 26.3% of his carries. Among players with any appreciable number of carries, this was by far the best in the NFL. Next best was Maurice Jones-Drew, who broke 31 tackles in 166 carries (15.1%). To put these numbers in context, LT broke 16 tackles in 348 carries (3.7%), Larry Johnson broke 26 tackles in 416 carries (6%), and Ronnie Brown broke 13 tackles in 241 carries (5%). Turner wasn't just a one-year wonder with the broken tackles -- in 2005 he broke 12 tackles in 57 attempts (18.2%).Of his 502 rushing yards in 2006, Turner gained 286 of them after contact, an average of 3.6 yards per carry after contact. In 2005, 201 of Turner's 335yards were after contact, an average of 3.5 yards per carry after contact.
