Frankly Jerry SHOULD be beholden to Carter.. cause they did him wrong cutting him when he had his substance issues. Everybody knows that's the worst thing you can do to an addict. They should have suspended him, and gotten into a program where he could get the help he needed. Maybe he never gets back on the field, but maybe his life goes a lot better for him. As it was dude hit some serious bottom before he finally made it out. And I don't think it was necessary. But yeah, I'm sure Jerry has taken care of more than his share of guys like Q over the years.
I don't know if they tried, and Carter just didn't want the help, but it seems uncharacteristic of Jerry to just abandon one of his guys.

you'll have to provide more evidence, but jerry looked out for randy because it was directly beneficial. it was also weed and not coke. and jerry reaching out to help quincy doesn't mean he was beholden, or that he agrees he was beholden, just that he cares. at the end of the day personal accountability is still necessary. i've already agreed that it's great to do, but not requisite by any means. i'm also not grandstanding. when my wife passed away, i fell into deep depression and destructive alcoholism and was summarily kicked to the curb by my employer and i don't hold any ill will towards them because it was my own doing.

I never saw any confirmation that Carter's issues were coke.. I thought he was a weed guy too.. At least until after his career flamed out. I think the depression of the mess he had made of his life might have pushed him to coke, but I always thought he was just a weed guy when he was playing. But I'd be hard pressed to find anything concrete yay or nay on that. I agree that it was his own doing.. and that he owns ultimate responsibility for his actions.. I just also believe that we are our brother's keeper.. at least to an extent. Jerry and the NFL had a chance to do the right thing with Carter (and so many others) and didn't. Now they have certainly gotten better in that regard and I think it's a step in the right direction. Mind you I don't drink, smoke or do any drugs and never have.. and consider anyone who succumbs to addiction to be weak. But that doesn't mean I don't think they don't deserve help.. and if I am in a position to help.. I try to do so. If I was a billionaire.. I'd be a lot like Jerry.. I'd help a lotta people. Believe me I've lost family members and friends to addiction. I don't view it lightly at all.

I think it was more about the social anxiety disorder than weed, with Gregory.

sure again, where we differ is I think helping is admirable, you think it's required. I just took issue w/ beholden. Men are beholden to themselves.

He's got several issues by all accounts. I was just saying it's easier to stand behind someone when the winds of change are at your back and you stand to benefit.

Well Carter did cuss Jerry out on the sideline during that disastrous game at AZ when he threw 3 picks (or was it 4?) but then threw what should have been the game winning TD only to have the kicking team botch the PAT and then lose in OT. Carter was benched the next week and the Cowboys season never really recovered.

Bruce Coslett screwed Carter, Emmitt and all of Cowboys nation with his shenanigans that year. He forced Carter to split practice snaps 50/50 with Hutchinson all season until Carter was benched .. then acted as if he couldn't figure out why Carter wasn't playing well. He also constantly refused to give Emmitt the ball much until the last game of the season and left Emmitt needing like 50-60 yards to keep his 1000 yard streak going against the Commanders in the season finale and the Commanders played like 9 men in the box to make sure he didn't get it.

Frankly I was surprised that Parcells went to bat for Q when he took over in '03.. and I'm sure he felt really betrayed when Carter relapsed over the summer of '04 after a relatively solid season under Parcells that first year.

It's not like Jerry shoved drugs in Carter's locker...Maybe Parcels did though.

I think that was Parcells but Jerry is the owner so I see where you are coming from. Big Bill is a jerk though.

Just ESPN?....heck it has been that way on here all year long also.
Wonder who all picked only 7 total wins, or less for us at this point.

Not supposed to pull old threads, but maybe a mod would do it with a summary.
