Well, yea. But we don't NEED his replacement now. Plus, Witten is 31 and has never been injured. We had no guards even after the Frederick pick. Jerry gambled on the idea of Leary being healthy and productive and Waters singing with us. It was a gamble but he won. However, he gambled on the DL and lost big. Ratliff is 32 with an injury history and the organization had to have some idea that he might not ever play again. We just lost Brent after his manslaughter charge. Spencer and Ware are getting up there in age and Spencer is on a one year deal. A TE replacement was not a premium need.

Dude, trust me, you're preaching to the choir on this one. If it were up to me, we'd draft nothing but OL/DL/QB. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so I'm simply trying to justify the logic.

Can we really say after a few games that Escobar was a bad pick?? They did go BPA according to their board, and drafting someone else cause of need is just a flawed strategy.

Give the kid a chance instead of assuming it will turn out like Fasano and Bennett.

I don't think that he will be a "bad pick" because he's a bad player. I think he will be a bad pick because like Martellus Bennett, he simply won't get the opportunity to prove just how good he is. Not his fault, it's all on the staff.

Well, he has gotten some opportunities and he's done the most when he does get them. He catches damn near everything thrown his way so far.

Absolutely, but wouldn't you prefer to see your second round pick get more involved? Maybe I'm being a little picky.

Guess the bottomline is where do you want to develop someone, and at that point in the draft a TE was the BPA. Could they have picked someone to develop behind Romo or Ware, sure, but TE was the BPA so Witten was first. Not to mention Witten, out of the main 3 of Romo, Ware, and Witten, is the one that shows the most decline at the moment outside of Ware's injuries.

Either way, we have to have a plan to replace all of Romo, Ware, and Witten.....and I would start with Witten just like we ended up doing.

I disagree with your assessment of who's in a quicker decline. I think Ware is pretty much done as a force. He's getting beat up with his hand in the dirt. On the flip side, I think Witten is still going very strong, and isn't yet showing his age. But I'm with you, all of them need to be replaced in the next 2-4 years, gotta start somewhere.

I don't think you are being picky, maybe just a little hesitant to wait to see what he does this season. It is still early in the season and each game requires a different game plan. So, maybe during some games he will he used in a mis-match and other times he will not be used.

But, the kid is just learning from the best TE that the Cowboys have had for a long time in Witten. Let him develop a little and then see...the kid is a rook, you know.

We agree on this, really its a toss up. I will say though, I have more hope for Ware I guess. Witten's decline is more gradual but by the way he plays he hides it somewhat. Kinda like Tony G does right now, just boxing people out cause he no longer has the athleticism to do anything else.

We need a future at all 3 spots, along with our other issues, Escobar was just the start.

You're right, I guess I just expect instant gratification from anyone picked in rounds 1-3. Not really fair to the player. I subscribe to the notion that you have to give a guy 3 years before calling him a "bust", so I'm certainly not going to go there with Escobar, or the Escobar project yet.

Haha, I guess the good thing with Witten is that he and "athleticism" have never gone hand in hand to begin with, at least not when compared to guys like Gonzalez. My hopes are high for Ware, the guy has been a staple, and you just hate to see a guy go from the most feared player in the league, to an average Joe, I just don't see it changing, and it sucks.

No way he signs a teo or three year deal or even signs an extension for next year. That would mean having to report to offseason workouts and training camp. If he plays after this year it will be on one year deals signed just before the season starts.

Yeah, Witten is not going to last forever, and neither is Ware, or any other player for that matter. So, you need to plan for the future with players that fit the needs of the team that Garrett is trying to build.

Oh, and Marty B was just a damn fool, that is why he did not work out and has been with a few teams since.

I can see that changing with Ware, but he has had a bad run with injuries. Switching a life long (NFL life that is) 3-4 OLB to DE at his age, which I didn't and still don't like, is a big change for him so we have to give him some time to adjust....we owe him that much. At least Witten gets to do the same thing he has done since he got here, Ware is in a whole nother universe right now.

We need them both right now, but its good to see the FO at least thinking about our future when they aren't available to us at a high level.

I would be cool with that. He's done it before and it seems like he's doing it again. I hope that Waters can play for another year or two with the Cowboys.

Written wasn't used a ton in his first year until later in the season. And he was o a team with less talent

one could also argue not having to go through camp with all that wear and tear on his body and especially the legs means he will be fresher at the end of the year than otherwise.

He's been solid no doubt especially in the passing game but can anybody explain why the running has not been more productive? I read before the Washington game where our running game is actually worse this year than last season.

I don't get the disconnect.

Well its simple, Waters is a much better pass blocker than run blocker. Not saying his run blocking is horrible or anything cause its not, but his pass blocking has been far superior throughout his career.
