ESPN Watkins: Stock Report: Who's up, down for Cowboys

I would include jenkins and watkins in that up group. Watkins is terrific covering punts. He made a tremendous play on that one punt in the third.

and jenkins keeps getting better and better.

and for what its worth, isnt this something andy reid has always done, give his team the monday off after bye weeks if they won? Or am I just imagining that?

Ok coach. When you and Coach Watkins get us our guaranteed playoff birth, maybe the team could earn a day or two after the two of you lead them to a Super Bowl win. One request though, could you keep Coach D on the staff? I like his fire! The special teams have been great!

I swear, most of these fans think players get weekends off like they do. I know I don't work on the weekends and I'm thankful.

Tell me, when do players have off during the season?

Please, if you want to have a conversation then we can do that, but don't act like a smart ***. If you had bothered to read my post you'd see I said if that's the way Wade wants to do it fine, I just don't agree with the philosophy in this particular instance.

I don't know what got into Watkins, but he was covering like a madman yesterday! I know he's always been pretty good, but wow.

It's a little silly to give the team a day off coming off a bye week, isn't it?

It was a reward for playing hard, but did you expect the players to actually stay away?

Wade Phillips' decision to give the Cowboys the day off following their 37-21 win over Atlanta comes with some expected criticism. It fuels the perception the coach is too easy on the player.

Marcus Spears wasn't among those complaining, revealing he would spend his free afternoon in the woods, hoping a deer would walk in front of his ground blind. He said these are the kind of rewards a team needs along the way to keep the players going.

Phillips doesn't see any harm. In fact, giving the players the day off didn't keep too many of them away.

"We had 45 guys already," the coach said at his early afternoon press conference. "It's just the day off from us meeting where we go over the tape with them. Tomorrow we'll go over the same tape with them except we'll leave out the good plays.

"So it's really not a great deal for them, because they don't get to cheer the good plays that they made. We go over all the mistakes that we made and things we need to work on."

The real advantage, Phillips said, was mentally, since the players know they don't have to be at Valley Ranch at any set time, but rather can come in and go through the regular Monday workout on their own.

The hate Wade receives is mind blowing at times.

I wonder if and when Cowboys fans will understand how good of a coach we actually have RIGHT NOW and stop looking for someone else to hop in here and "straighten **** out", when clearly it's the players themselves that had to learn how to win to begin with, because it clearly wasn't happening at all under Parcells.

I credit Parcells only for improving the talent level of the ballclub. That is all. Wade has done more and improved upon Bill's roster IMO since he's been here and it's still not clear how much... but:

The Defense on display yesterday was very reminscent of the fabulously quick, attacking San Diego unit that should have beaten New England in the AFC title game in '06. The only difference is: this club has even better talent than that one did, especially at CB.

Wade is in the last yr of his contract... until Jerry gives him another year his stock will always be down! Unless you think NFL coaches enjoy being a lame duck...

They really did not have a day off. All these stupid lame arse whiner media people. Always want the negative.
Monday is for reviewing film, Tuesday's are their normal day off.
Wade said 45 of the players came in today, and expects the rest to come in.

They got the day off of NO film watching. But he said they will still watch it tomoorrow [their real day off] but they are only going to review the negative things, not the good plays.

So they only got a delay in film watching.

Stock Up:

Gerald Sensabaugh - was the biggest factor in keeping future HOFer Tony Gonzalez relatively quiet and was a beast against the run. If not for the cast, would have had an easy pick too.

Patrick Crayton - I wanted him gone, but he nutted up after the double demotion and made 2 HUGE plays, as a WR and returner, both for TDs.

Coaches - Every coach, from Wade, to Garrett, to DeCamilis had their units prepared and/or adjusting to create a perfect storm on O, D and ST. The only coach I would leave out is assistant Campo, who's unit had yet another brain fart in the red zone or a crucial down (final 2 minutes/big 3rd down).

Stock Down:

Ken Hamlin - still tackles like a girl and can't catch worth a dang, another INT goes through his hands (and he doesn't even have the excuse of a cast). Not to mention the garbage TD by the Falcs was on him (noted by Bradie that there was confusion on the "backside" and Wade chewing out Campo right after the score).

Bobby Carpenter - there is no way he should ever be in the game on short yardage or goal line. Carp does not even try to shed blocks. The second TD drive he made at least 3 half hearted attempts to get off blocks, the one on the goal line was inexcusable. The combo of James, Carp and Hatcher on 3rd and 5 is just an invitation to run.

Stone cold waste of a roster spot. No reason in the world Jason Williams should have been inactive yesterday. I doubt Barbie could tackle in Lingerie Bowl.

I am with you on these two as well. Watkins was a madman running down the field on coverage. He had at least 2 sweet hits on the Falcons' returner. The Falcons were the instigators though, they started the game w/some huge hits but the Cowboys responded with exclamation point licks of their own on D and ST, especially as the game wore on (they could smell the blood it seemed).

Speaking of hits, Jenkins has become a devastating hitter. I don't like that he (and Newman) prefer to lead w/the shoulder instead of wrapping up ala Ken Hamlin, but Jenkins has used all the negativity against him (soft) to make himself a headhunter. Both Jenkins and Newman hit harder than Ken Hamlin tho. :D

Seriously? After his team ***** slaps a good Atlanta team in all three phases of the game his stock is down because he rewards the team with a day of rest.

I know Hostile's motto is Embrace the Hatred, but this year on this board, and in the media, we need to change it too: Embrace the Idiocy, or Embrace the Agenda. Ridiculous.

BBQ

Your post is very common sense. I see by your post count and date to join that you haven't become habituated with the insanity that general runs rampant on this board. I'm envious.

Maybe, just maybe, Wade has a feel for this team and knows what it needs.

This forum amazes me sometimes. Now that we beat ATL, some media and posters want to down play the significance of the game, or call ATL a pretender. Funny, I remember posters on this same forum saying we had NO CHANCE a WEEK before the game was even played.

Outscoring them 37-7 during the game showed the BYE week worked pretty well for us, not to mention our record coming off of BYE weeks is strong. So maybe, just maybe, getting 1 extra day off isn't such a bad thing...........

The term is cognitive dissonance. To be a good team Dallas has to beat a good team (such as Atlanta). But by definition that team is no good if it loses to the Cowboys. So what would have been a prized win four days ago is now worthless because the Falcons can't be any good if we beat them.

:lmao:

The next game counts just as much as this one.

This isn't a team known for being well prepared or particularly disciplined. Now they are that much less so for next Sunday.

Plus, while Atlanta may be a good team, I don't think many put them in that elite category. And they are not even in our division.

It was a nice win. To treat it as anything more to the possible detriment of next week is silly IMO.

"A possible detriment?" Who can say whether it is a detriment or a blessing?
I suppose we will find out next Sunday.
