NFL Preseason predictions are usually very unreliable. The so called experts from all the major football media outlets are usually wrong in their pre-season predictions of who will win the SB. Why is that?
Because the NFL is THE most unpredictable of all the pro sports leagues. I put very little stock in almost all preseason predictions. Look at some of the predictions done by some of the big NFL media outlets and their writers the past two seasons, then realize this- no one knows.
PAST TWO SEASONS SB PREDICTIONS:
2021 Predictions
2020 Predictions
- Sports illustrated- picked GB to beat Buffalo in the SB. Neither made the SB.
- ESPN- predicted the Chiefs would beat the Bucs in a rematch. Didn’t happen.
- PFF- also predicted a rematch of chiefs and bucs but had the Bucs repeating.
- CBS Sports- predicted the Bills would beat the Bucs or the Pack.
Simple truth here: NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. AND THAT MAKES IT FUN!
- Sports Illustrated- picked the Ravens to beat the Saints in SB LV. (The Bucs beat the chiefs)
- ESPN- picked the chiefs to beat the Cowboys! (Sadly, we didn’t make the playoffs)
- PFF- picked the chiefs to beat the saints.
- CBS Sports- their writers did not have a consensus but picked either the ravens, colts, chiefs or Cowboys to beat either the pack, ravens, Seahawks, Cowboys, or chiefs.
Who will win SB LVII? No one has a clue.
Bobhaze: There no experts regarding predictions for this - or any - NFL season.NFL Preseason predictions are usually very unreliable. The so called experts from all the major football media outlets are usually wrong in their pre-season predictions of who will win the SB. Why is that?

No, but we can easily predict who will be the bigger contenders . Which is much more predictable based on current history and trends .
Doesn’t mean won’t be some surprises but there won’t be many the last weekends in the playoffs. .
Who is our Bubba's Smith? He only got one piece of chicken. Had to stop at KFC on his way home.
Those four people probably reviewed the four-season slide down that NE had following their Super Bowl XXXI appearance:It's always been exactly like this. I don't even put any of those predictions close to top tier bad choices. They were wrong but they have to produce some content and predictions are just a normal part of that.
The worst pre-season analysis I ever saw was prior to the 2001 season. Somebody got 4 anonymous front office type to make some predictions and the one they all agreed on was the team looking at the worst long term future at that point was --- the New England Patriots.
And why I stated there is often a surprise while most of the teams going deep in the playoffs have been there before .Reading your post I'd have to agree with you. Because that's how I see it too. But how do we explain more than half of the Super Bowls having a team that didn't make the playoffs the year before? That has to be a surprise, and more than half the times.
If we were looking for a surprise this year from a non playoff team last year I’d suggest teams like Chargers and Broncos because of big off season moves and an up and coming Elite QB.
While some might consider them a surprise cause they haven’t been playoff teams they shouldn’t be surprised.
Who was surprised Tampa won Super Bowl after not making playoffs after big free agency ?
And who was surprised Rams last year after blockbuster Free Agency?
These should not be considered surprises.
Maybe no one in a publication we can quote. If they get it wrong all the time the evermore reason not to listen. LolRight. Yet we won't see anyone pick them. But there are teams not expected. No one saw the 49ers going to the SB in 2019 after their 6-10 season. I can bring up many examples. In 1998 the Rams were 4-12.
Of course you're spot on as to the reasons why, I'm just saying no one predicts this.
I thought we were talking about SB winners.Right, Tampa was an obvious possibility. But the Rams made the playoffs the year before last. It was the Bengals that didn't.
I thought we were talking about SB winners.
Bengals would fall in my category of less surprise with an up an coming Elite QB. But yea, they were somewhat of a surprise in preseason predictions. It happens but I’d argue not the general rule for most teams going deep in the playoffs.
And the biggest one of them all is health. That’s the main reason it’s so difficult to pick the winner.Everyone is guessing. They may have good reason to believe what they're saying, but they know there are too many variables, and any one of those variables can change everything.
That's probably true, but there are other big factors, such as rookies not having the impact they were expecting, new free agents either having no chemistry with the team or just being misused, close games that went their way this past season going the other way this coming season, etc...So many variables. And the biggest one of them all is health. That’s the main reason it’s so difficult to pick the winner.
The 2019 49ers come to mind-And the biggest one of them all is health. That’s the main reason it’s so difficult to pick the winner.
