Obviously someone's lost their ability to think rationally due to the loss.

The problem isn't at DT... As a matter of fact there is some quality there. I think a great many teams would be thrilled with Collins and Irving.

I think Collins will be much improved next year. He's a 310 lb guy who can play both DT spots and is a natural pass rusher. You can't ask for more than that. I expect him to be much improved next season. We just need to pair him with another similar talent. I'd go big in free agency on a DT to pair him with. I don't want T. Crawford near this starting lineup. He's better suited as a DT when we're in the Nickel and a backup 3DT/SDE otherwise. I'd like to see Irving develop into a starting caliber SDE. He was just wildly inconsistent this year. But we desperately need a WDE.

Collins isn't a backup. Not sure the underrated T. Crawford is either.

Irving is a force too and DLawrence was hurt....if Thornton and Mayowa and McClain are our backups that is pretty good

Draft a DE at 28 and sign a DT in FA..... we also get Tapper back

36 sacks wasn't that bad

Someone mentioned earlier , in one of the offseason needs threads, that DT is not a position of need.

I disagree.

I also agree with the OP's comments for the most part.

There are many teams in this league that would not have any of our Defensive linemen as starters.

Sure there would be a few teams out there that might be just as bad or worse than us on the D line but for the most part I think, just MY OPINION, that most of our starters on the Dline would not be starters and be rotational or backups on most other rosters.

I'm looking forward to Jaylon Smith's impact on this defense. It sucks we lost, but the arrow is pointing way up for this team.
Look around every franchise and see that they are getting older and/or staying mediocre.
Dak proved himself yesterday. The Cowboys hit a home run with him.Zeke is a beast and both will only get better.
Rodgers,Brady,Eli and Brees will not play forever.
The future looks very bright.
Keep that chin up...our team will dominate the league very soon.

A lot of the thinking about DT has go start with the question of whether Irving will/can become a everydown player or not.

Not sure yet.

My significant other asked, " why don't we have guys that can hit him?"
I said, " the guys he has protecting him are better than the guys we have trying to hit him"

She said, " well that's dumb".

I would fire Marinelli. I think the intel he gives the decision makers leads to underrating the need for a talent upgrade in all three phases of the defense. You have to remember, the Cowboys don't have talent evaluators at the top. Just an oil man and his son. They are completely dependent on feedback from their staff and I believe Marinelli is the one understating our defensive needs. He seems to have a liking for the unheralded try hard overachiever type. Just get him some of those and he can make it work. We'll give them cute nicknames, press some buzzword t-shirts and all should be golden.

Flush the franchise of this mindset and get some damn talent on defense. You need everything.

If we get a top DE, a LB, and a CB we will be in the super bowl next year. Yes sir. Like Denver did a couple of years ago. Spend some cash, make some trades, and sign 2-4 free agents and we can do this.

  • Can we trade Tony and a pick for Clowney?
  • Can we get JPP for a 3 year 40 mill deal?
If we head into next year with JPP and Clowney as starters at DE w Irving and Tank as back ups that would be significantly better. If the Giants offer JPP a 1 year deal or less than 13 mill a year, he will bolt.

Get rid of Crawford. We don't need him at DT- Collins, Thorton can man that position. We can draft so one to rotate with them if we don't resign McClain.

Unless we turnover at least 3 of 4, expect the exact same result next year.
Add one elite player and it will make everybody else much better.

They need 1 elite player more than they need 3 above average but not elite type players.

Houston should trade Clowney straight up for Romo. They were a playoff team with a bad QB. Adding an elite QB like Romo would make them instant Super Bowl contenders even without Clowney, especially if Watt returns healthy.

What are you talking about? Marinelli knows exactly the kinds of guys who fit into his defense. Look at the studs he brought in each year:

2013: Hayden, Selvie
2014: Mincey, Melton, T. McClain
2015: Hardy
2016: Thornton, Mayowa

Those are 8 Pro Bowl talents.

I'd be ok with Romo for Clowney straight up. But if necessary, if wouldn't mind throwing in a lil sumptin extra

Exactly. Irving, McClain and Mayowa had me fooled. And apparently T. Crawford played for his contract and then quit. He stole from Jerry. What a bust.

Some people want the same guys, and expect a different outcome. Stating that maybe another year, and increased health will make them better. I'm not with those people.
