Here's the same mistake so many make. TRYING to compare a time when there was no cap to today. A time when the Cowboys paid backups that would be and after the cap started were starters on other teams. All these players were not young drafted players, but free agents that Jones offered more money to than other teams could offer. That is why the Cowboys had by far the deepest team in the league. Irvin was drafted the season before Johnson came so when they had their run at the Super Bowls he had 5 years in. Yes the Cowboys got lucky with Aikman and Emmitt but unlike what you think the Cowboys Super Bowl teams weren't a bunch of young players. They had players with 7,8,9,10 and 15 years in the league. Deion, Haley, Case, Donaldson, Hellestae, Tuiei, Novacek, Bates and the list goes on. Some of them were young and inexperienced but they were also good and because there was no cap they could try players and some weren't that good and got cut without the problem of the cap that they can't do today. It also wasn't just a couple years but 4 years and today a lot of those players will cost or get signed by other teams. The days of going young and let them get experience and about the time they become a team, they become a salary issue or they have to let some walk. Your idea works well in fantasy football.
