Belichick is a much better coach than people are giving him credit for. Sure, he has the GOAT at QB, but he still has to win with all the other starters, including some of his great defenses.
Also, he has gone from GOAT to career backups. LOL Big drop off. Giving the Cowboys a run for their money on those days when we were desperate to find an Aikman replacement.
Some things that might prevent his success:
- Oh yeah, that dude Mike McCarthy isn't exactly a failing coach, and might still win it all! We're writing this thread like he's one and done. Let's at least wait for the results from the Skins game first. We lose that game and the NFC East, it's a foregone conclusion Big Mac is on his way out without a Super Bowl to save him.
- Belichick loves to be the GM and run his personnel in detail. I keep hearing from Pats fans that they think it's a reason why he is failing now. It's one thing to lose Brady, but with his age getting up there, he just doesn't have the energy anymore to also be the GM. Parcells used to be like that too, but relented to Jerry/Stephen/etc, so I could see Belichick possibly compromising in old age too.
- Here's the biggest knock - Big Mac is sort of a player's coach. Will listen to his players and change as needed. It's a reason why he is one of the oldest coaches now, because it's usually the first thing to strike down old coaches. I don't think Belichick has that in him. And he doesn't have the personality and button pushing ability like Parcells and Jimmy to overcome it. It would also be a big change for the players who were used to it from McCarthy. Even Jimmy once said you can go hard to soft, but not the other way. Not to say Coach Mac is soft, because he ISN'T. But he is much more of a people person than Coach Mumbles and chemistry in that locker room is extremely important.
