ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has teamed up with the United Way and donated $10,000 to assist families affected by the massacre at Virginia Tech, his foundation announced Wednesday.

"When tragic things like this happen, families have enough to deal with, and if I can help in some small way, that's the least I can do," said Vick, who played football at Virginia Tech before joining the Falcons in 2001 as the top overall pick in the NFL draft.

The Vick Foundation is collecting donations from local communities in both Atlanta and Virginia that will be placed in the United In Caring Fund for Victims of the VA Tech Tragedy and the special fund at the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd counties, which serves the Virginia Tech area.

The foundation said the money will be used to provide help with funeral expenses, transportation for family members and other support services.

That's his weed money for the week. He could have done a little better than $10,000 in my opinion. The man signed a contract which guaranteed him $37 mil in bonuses and will pay him $130 mil if he fulfills the entire deal.

Ron Mexico finally comes through in the clutch. Good for him, but he can't be the only Virginia Tech alum/professional athlete out there. Perhaps others will follow his good example and contribute as well.

If I needed a QB Vick still would not be the guy I would want behind center but Vick the person did something that I feel should be acknowledged and so from that stand point I applaud him for this act of charity

The fact that he did something at all is something to be applauded. He didn't have to. And he also help set up a special fund for others to contribute to if they're so inclined.

Doesn't matter if he gave a $1 or a $100, he gave.

He was not obligated to give anything, the fact that he has done so during a time of need should not be scoffed at

That was my first reaction as well. But I agree with others, the fact that he's doing something deserves credit.

When I first heard about this, .. I mean when it was just one incident, .. a shooting on the campus of VT, I wondered if Marcus Vick was back on campus.

I don't mean to say that jokingly, that was my first thought.

Initially I thought "he should give more" -- but you are right, just doing something is important - also, this isn't about the money - it would almost be insulting for him to throw some huge some of money around.

My issue with the " he could've done more" crowd is: Have you done anything?

I just think it sucks when we scorn what a person gives in good faith, when I haven't given anything. I realize some have acknowledged that he did a good thing, but if you haven't done a thing, why scorn what someone else has.

In all honesty, how do we know that Vick has not already contributed a $100K+ to VT, a $100K+ to the Atlanta community, a $100K+ to his Newport News, VA hometown and $200K+ to other unknown charities. The $10K donation could be in addition to everything else that he's given. Right?

Fact is, we don't know the depth of his generousity in that manner. We should all be thankful that a man in his position would do something to bless the families of the VT victims that could possibly influence others to do same.

Great gesture by Vick, as somebody else said, this situation isn´t about money, this is not Katrina where money was of the utmost importace to those affected.

I believe the last thing the parents who lost a child in this sensless act are thinking about is money, they need counseling and support and what Vick is doing helps a great deal in that effort.

Kudos to him.

Funny, the guy does something which is more than a lot, maybe any of the other rich VT alum did and he gets criticized.

Real classy bro.

dude made about $25 million in 2005-6, when signed his new contract, $10K is .004% of that! but ron mexico giving $10K (which equates to about $15 to someone making $50K a year) is not the issue to me, to me what is troubling is that he felt the need to issue a press release to announce it when that is in fact (speaking in percentages of income) less than i spend on girl scout cookies, never mind what i give to charity on a regular basis!! millions of people give a higher percentage of their income than that every single week in the offering plates of their church!! it smacks of a desperate attempt to prop up his image and when put in relation to what he is actually worth, it is pocket change and not worthy of celebration even though i readily conceed it is true that he didn't have to do anything!
