The off season for me is usually a very interesting time. Roster changes, free agent signings and the draft make for some very interesting changes hopefully leading to a better team. I always find the chess game of off season moves very interesting.
And thankfully, the Cowboys organization has become much better about “churning the roster” each year to get younger, more talented and more cap friendly.
One trend that is often overlooked by our fans is the inevitable change that comes every year with the roster. Not that many years ago, the Cowboys too often hung on to players who were being overpaid, getting older and past the best window of their value.
Not anymore. Last year at one point, the Cowboys were the 2nd youngest team in the NFL and had 18 new faces on the 2018 final 53 man roster. That’s about 34% of the roster changing from the previous season.
In fact, the Cowboys of the last three seasons average 15-18 new faces per year. That also means about 15-18 guys on last year's team will be gone in 2019.
When I read a lot of the proposed offseason moves, many fans tend to live in the past and present- not the future. We fans have a hard time letting go of some favorite players that the front office has to make hard decisions on and to often say goodbye. That’s the way it must be if you want to win a championship.
Put it this way- don’t be surprised to see more than one roster surprise cut before the 2019 season starts in September. Last year, many were shocked when Dan Bailey was cut. Who will be 2019’s Dan Bailey? Sean Lee? Tyrone Crawford?
The only guarantee I can make is there will be some fans very surprised at how many new players will be on this roster in 2019. And it’s all part of getting better.
