Why is phillys move to have the oline coach their DC such a genius move? The nflnetwork seems to think this is a no brainer but i think it is flat out stupid. Yes he breaks down defensive fronts but their is a whole lot more to being a good dc than that. Besides he was already there so its not like he brings anything new. This is a way for Andy "The genius" Reed to micro manage his defense. Just like "The dream Team" it is a HUGE overhyped/ overlooked mistake.
To be honest the whole reason they had to bring in the "dream team" is there blown drafts. year after year they trade back bring in quantity and churn their roster over. Year after year they have missed on dt and had to sign two this offseason. Anyway this Philly hype is reaching Favrvapolusa levels for me. let them get the props , it will make all the more enjoyable when the collapse by seasons end. Prossman

Promote the "Hype"..........Hype doesn't win the NFC east. I hope the Dream Team label sticks all year. Also, to your point could imagine the beating the Cowboys and Jerry Jones would take if they made Hudson Houck the DC? Ha!

It is an act of desperation that they hope will work. Understanding the concepts of coverages alone takes a lot of time to learn. Plus, when you factor in the feel for how to call a game, which I believe is difficult to learn, will be very difficult.

Defense will be their Achilles heel this year along with offensive line problems.

Basically you can spin any decision a team makes as a positive move. The only real variable is the intent of the writer. Most of the media (even non-sports) in general follows a basic principle and that is ..

Over hype any negative stories and if there are no popular negative stories at the moment, take a popular positive story and hype it from every angle possible to create unrealistic expectations so that when the story fails to meet those expectations, you now have your negative story you can over hype.

Being a "Play Caller" in the NFL is where you separate the men from the boys in coaching. There are very good positional coaches who turn out to be terrible at seeing and adjusting to the flow. Andy Reid himself is dubious is this respect and has blown more than a few big games with bad calls. This will be the achilles heel of the Iggles this year, on both sides of the ball.

The Eagles are rebuilding key parts of their team through free agency, starting with their QB. That's not good for any team. Dallas did that for how long - from drew Bledsoe to T.O. to Ken Hamlin to Leonard Davis? And how well dod that work out for us?

Dallas is finally set at QB because a home grown talent (Romo) replaced Bledsoe. We now have a better, home-growm WR corps than anytthing we had with T.O. here; all of our WRs are good and home grown now. The OL is finally starting to come along as Doug Free was the new home-grown youngster to take over, and now others are beginning to fill in the OL. this is why we'll have a stronger and stronger OL as the next few years roll along.

At Safety, we still have problems because we're still building that position through free agency, and drafting a Safety will be - or should be - our team's top priority next draft.

So let the Eagles have all the free agent CBs and DTs they want. We'll still match up favaroably against their DL and Secondary this year. And we will be better suited against them in years to come because it will be our home-grown talent (OL and WRs) vs. their declining hired guns who will struggle long term at hte positions they addressed this offseason.

You don't have to look past Washington to know that the same story will play out in Philly. you can title it "The Curse of Rebuilding through Free Agency". They'll enjoy thier honeymoon (first year) and hate the marrige (the remaining years of these free agents' contracts).

Yes it will because they always do.

A good coach is a good coach. I used to say to my previous pastor who was a big hockey fan that Jimmy Johnson could coach a Hockey team to the Stanley Cup. Maybe I don't have a clue, but I though key elements of being a good coach transcended sports lines. Like being a motivator and leader.

No way that you can say a O line coach can go out and be a top or even a good DC right away. Sorry. It is like taking a helicopter pilot and putting him in a 737.

I agree that playcalling will be a big adjustment with this new DC.

But what Ive have heard......dont underestimate their new DC. He used to spend alot of time with Jim Johnson studying film ....even tho he was a offensive assistant. And he also has one of the best DL coaches in the game helping him out.

That being said.....Let the media hype them up.....Were not scared of them :)

LIke alot of NFL teams they have holes to fix. Their front office by some even here have been praised on how great they are......they are so great....that they had to fill a bunch of spots with FA players....because their drafts like alot of NFL teams have been hit or miss.

Its not just Jerry Jones that misses..... :)

Let the media hype the Eagles up......let them believe it.......but the NFC East will be a battle....

game, set, match...and it is a damn shame.

I actually haven't heard anyone praise the move. Most people have either been critical, or have said something like "it's an unprecedented move, but it remains to be seen whether it will pay off." I think the latter is fair. It's a totally unprecedented move, but that doesn't mean he can't be successful. Just wait and see how he goes before making a decision.

Wade Phillips is a good D-coordinator for the most part. Didn't translate too well when he was hired to wear the headset. A fairly flawed argument. Same for Weiss, Crennell, Marvin Lewis, ... and the beat goes on.

Yeah, I agree with this. I don't think he will struggle at all. Most good coaches learn what to do for every position, but some focus in one area. There will be bumps in the road, there always are. But chances are he will still get out of his players what he always did. Sometimes we as fans focus too hard on what guys do and pigeonhole them there.

Look at Paul Pasqualoni here. How many different positions did he coach here, 2 or 3? Then became DC to end last year.

I totally agree. I would ask these same pundits, if the cowboys made such a move, what would they say? it would be funny to see them scramble.

Stop acting like their whole team is full of free agents. They didn't rebuild through Free-Agency like the Commanders. They never even rebuilt. They won 10 games last year, and added free-agents at positions of need. There were 2 years of free-agents hitting the market at once and Philly added depth to an already talented roster. If Jerry wasn't such a moron giving out massive contracts to Roy Williams, Barber (we all knew he would break down), Newman and Colombo etc etc, we might have been able to improve our team as well. Instead, we've made zero improvements to a 6-10 team, and we're stuck with $20M dead cap next year. I really didn't want to turn this into a Jerry bashing thread, but the point is, he's sucked as a GM since Jimmie left. As and owner, he's fine. But I hate him as a GM.

You seem pretty confident that we'll kick Philly's butt. Why so certain? Last time we played, DeSean had over 200 yards and McCoy had 150 yards on the ground. What have we done to improve our pass-defense? What about our run-defense? Did you watch the game last year, every man and his dog knew Philly was running out the clock, and we couldn't stop McCoy. They weren't little gains either, he was picking up 10 yards a play. It was disgusting.

The strength of this team is our receiving corps, right? Well that's pretty much neutralized with their secondary. The weakness is the OL, right? Well they went out and added two pro-bowl caliber pass-rushers. So can you explain to me and everyone else what makes you so damn sure that we can beat Philthy this year? Rob Ryan?

[/rant]

I feel better now.

Switching from O-line coach to D-Coordinator is a big move, no doubt, and certainly seems odd, but he isn't the defensive novice some think. He was a college Linebacker and coached defense many years when he first started coaching. NFL is a different level no doubt, but he's been in the NFL long enough now that it's not like he is going to be wide eyed and helpless.

Because as it turns out the commissioner helped influence Mike Vick to go to the Eagles instead of Buffalo or Cincy. It is only natural that his network do everything they can to promote the Eagles in order to give that same commissioner the success story he was looking for.

Huh? First, what possible interest does Goodell have in promoting the Eagles, and second, even if that is true how does the Eagles promoting a guy from offensive line coach to D-Coordinator accomplish this?

Because everything they do is over hyped right now and some times success is as much about perception as it is about actual success. Especially where marketing is concerned.
