Extend Crawford now?

Title pretty much says it all. He played well last year, his 2nd year in the league after being injured his entire rookie season. (Correct?)

Pretty much every report at camp has him looking like our best D-lineman so far. Maybe the FO can get him to commit a few years on the cheaper end of the good DT market? IMO he is going to get very expensive if he is healthy all year.

People keep asking why would he do it. His archilles injury from training camp a few years back would be one I point to.

But they won't be able to low ball him too much. Regardless of how he plays, the franchise tag for DTs might be too exorbitant a price for me so I would push hard to lock him in now.

No.

Tyrone Crawford played his entire rookie season and was lost for the year during the first practice of training camp in 2013, his second season.

Crawford made an amazing recovery from the Achilles tear and showed no ill effects last year.

I don't doubt the team is attempting to get a long term deal in placed for Crawford, who moved to under tackle on the fly during camp last year and should only get better the more he plays the position.

First guess at what an extention might cost based on recent signees-- he'll be somewhere between Ngata (8.5m) and Nick Fairley (4.75m). So right around 6.5m/year? That puts him at the high end of the 2nd tier of 4-3 defensive ends.

5 years, 6.5m/year, replace the pittance he's getting paid right now and guarantee the first two years of salary (13m total) as well as a 5m signing bonus for 18m total guaranteed.

It's not cheap for the team, but it does lock him in and give the team some certainty at a position where he's the only sure thing we have (the other DT spot right now is a complete black hole).

I'm curious to see how Tyrone Crawford's contract situation turns out.

Everyone is proceeding right now under the assumption Crawford is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract and will become an unrestricted free agent next off-season.

I'm not sure that will prove to be true.

Crawford's contract may have contained split salary clauses in the first and second seasons to protect the team in the event the DT suffered a major injury during the off-season or training camp of those years.

If there was a split contract clause in 2013, Crawford didn't accrue a season towards unrestricted free agency that year and will not be an unrestricted free agent following this season.

He would either remain under contract for another year or become a restricted free agent.

But I have no idea if there was a split salary clause for the 2013 season.

News will eventually filter out sooner or later.

I think that happened with Leary and Weems as well, but it was never clear.

Either way they should act now if it gets them a discount.

The advantage of signing him before he breaks out is to save money not match the market
The idea would be to sign him around 5 mil a year with incentives. If he does turn into a elite player he gets more, if not the team is protected
Love the player and would love to extend him now but a good pass rushing DT can make big money
He might want to gamble on himself, I would

Very interesting and huge in the great scheme of things

Ronald Leary and Darrion Weems weren't on the roster (6 game minimum) in 2012 to accrue a season of service towards free agency.

Weems also missed almost all of last season due to a shoulder injury, he went on IR during week 3, and may not have accrued a free agency credit again if there was a split salary clause in his contract (and I expect it was).

Regardless of how Tyrone Crawford's contract status turns out, I agree it would be best to simply move ahead with getting an extension done before the regular season commences.

He's a good, young player.

Only a great GM would get him signed early like we did Dez and DeMarco last year, oops. I am still in awe of how he healed off that achilles.

I would love to see Crawford signed now, but there's really no pressure to. The Cowboys can carry a lot of the $17 million of cap room they currently own into next year (if I'm not mistaken). And with Dez secured, they can always franchise Crawford if he has a season worthy of getting the tag.

He played as a DE as a rookie in Ryans 3-4. Kinda non descript, but not bad

I would let him play out his contract. I don't see him as some breakout superstar in the making like most of you do.and if he puts up crazy good stats this season just franchise tag him.

Absolutely.

The year before it was the same story with Barry Church also making an amazing recovery from an Achilles.

This year it's Morris Claiborne returning unbelievably fast from a patellar tendon.

Many players are never the same after these injuries.

It says a lot about these players, our medical team and the training staff.
