F-16 still going strong

So does anyone know why I've been seeing F-4s cruising around the Gulf lately?

They aren't flying along side the f-22s, but they're usually flying the same patterns that I've seen the 22s in.

We have a lot of oddball stuff right outside my window....giant Navy Sea Fighters, Stealth Cruisers, Marine LCAC hovercraft, lots of Navy Seal stuff (ASDS)...but I might be inclined to say that seeing an F4 is the oddest thing I've seen lately.

IF I recall correctly, the F16s are being refitted and used for targeting things like the new Chinese Stealth planes. Their radar capabilities can be pretty amazing.

Great design!

I always found it a bit strange that at onetime the F-4s were used as the Blue Angel's planes. F-4s were not best known for its manueverability and agility, as the A-4s and F-18s.

I think it was Yeager that said the F-4 was proof that you could get a brick to fly if you tied a big enough engine to it.

i see F-16's almost everyday! And, my home is right under a flight path of those noisy, bad *** planes!

I live in Utah about 5 miles from Hill, AFB (see below) and I worked for the Defense Information Systems Agency as a mainframe computer programmer and our building was on Hill AFB. I see all kinds of planes everyday. And, the Hill AFB Space Museum is awesome. It has almost every plane that has been made for the Military, plus some bad ICBM's on display.

Hill Air Force Base is an Air Force Materiel Command base located in northern Utah. Hill is home to many operational and support missions, with the Ogden Air Logistics Center (OO-ALC) serving as the host organization. The center provides worldwide engineering and logistics management for the F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. The base performs depot maintenance of the F-16, A-10 and C-130 Hercules aircraft.

The Warthog...takes a hit and keeps on ticking.

I flew an F-4 sim at Spangdahlem in the late 80's. I think the pilot told me it had a 3-1(?) drop to glide ratio, so yeah, flying brick. They also couldn't go completely vertical? The pedals were the brakes, not the stab controls. Very hard to not use them to turn lol.

I think there are several Euro countries that still use the F-4 as Wild Weasel's. Something about that wide body that makes a great platform?

The Belgians or Germans still use the F-4's. We see them a lot here in ABQ flying down to the school in Roswell.

Some of my all-time favs:

Was it a targeting drone?
