I think it would be the opposite. Smith seemed to be a good fit for this scheme. He's a fast linebacker who needs to be kept clean. He's not the type that can consistently take on linemen and win (and consequently, he spent a lot of time last year trying to go around them). However, if we have poor DTs in front of him then he won't look much different than he did this year.

I think he can play WLB fine if the DTs can slow down blockers (which they couldn't last year) and I think he can be OK at SLB, where he can be used as a blitzer and have to face tight ends more than OL. He is not an MLB.

I want to chalk last year up to a bad fit/bad DTs and give him a chance to show that he can play like he was a couple of years ago, when the line in front of him was doing a much better job of keeping linemen off him. I think players get written off sometimes when their bad play is a direct result of the trash around them.

I just don't like the dude.

If his departure creates a huge hole in the defense I'll take the hole.

If he is released, its either because Quinn finally told them the truth instead of what they wanted to hear or he doesn't fit the scheme....not because they had no choice but to lose him.

I doubt the team would purposely create a void.

Either way I doubt it happens. It's way too good to be true.

I'm not for creating holes unnecessarily. The Joneses' FA philosophy is not a good one for filling them with better players.

If we had a front office that actually upgraded positions in FA, then it would be different.

I think the Jaylon situation is set up perfectly to be settled this season. Cutting him this year only really nets a cap savings of $400,000. Sure, we could split the hit, but the savings remains the same. Cutting him next year saves $5 million.

Play this year out and see what he looks like, then based on his play either cut him next year or restructure.

Kinda what I mean.

If they cut him, the cap savings is minimal....but it wouldn't be about that.

It means either they are finally being real about him or he doesn't fit the scheme.

Not as if they want to keep him and can't.

The whole idea is tied to bringing in Neal anyway, so any hole would be filled by him or someone else the feel confident in getting.

Quinn will use more three-linebacker sets than Nolan did. Getting Neal fills the need for that third linebacker. So cutting Jaylon would mean we'd still need to pick up a third starting linebacker since there's no one currently on the roster that I'd trust in that role.

Considering that we couldn't use the money we'd get for designating him as a June 1 cut until that time, I guess we could pick up a third LB then, but otherwise, we'd probably be relying on the draft to find one ... and that's not a reliable source of replacement unless we want to spend another early pick on the position. (And face it, there are some questions about LVE, and he was a first-round pick.)

It would be crazy to cut Jaylon. He is the only starter that is available every game. Sure LB needs to upgrade but no need to make a weakness even worst. Keep him, sign a guy like Neal and draft a LB or two. Jaylon plays better when he doesn't have to do everything at LB. Get a solid guy beside him and he will look better

I agree with your point in principle.

I also agree that hoping he can return to 2018 form in a more friendly scheme was worth a look.

But we don't know what Quinn is saying as far as his value or the role he will play.

I'm sure if his recommendation is to part ways he has a viable solution in mind.

Possibly Neal, possibly a subsequent move.

Also, while the team may not benefit much toward the cap by cutting him now, they would not have to pay his actual salary of 9.2 million.

If you bring in Neal, Jaylon practically becomes a 2 down LB until Vander Esch gets hurt. Unless you only sign Neal for a year or he is terrible, they clock would be ticking in Smith

If we sign Neal, I would like for us to get a couple of linebackers in the middle rounds to hopefully have someone who can take over for Jaylon next year, when cutting him would be in our best interest capwise. However, cutting him before we have anyone to replace him is a bad way of building a team.

I doubt Quinn would want to cut him. He's got enough to worry about, knowing that this ownership isn't going to give him much more than scraps in FA. He's trying to fix a historically bad defense basically just with his skill as a defensive coordinator.

If we did cut Jaylon, I fear that it would simply be because the Joneses think he's making too much instead of because we have a viable solution for replacing him.

Not sure how we'll employ the linebackers if we get Neal. It would be interesting to see. Since he's more of a safety, I would expect Neal to be out there in one of the linebacker spots in the nickel or dime.

Sime of it should be similar to how we used Wilcox in subs in 2014. With the exception that he will probably have some man coverage responsibilities with TE'S and HB's. As well as blitzing
