Well I was cautious in biting on "We are going to bust the budget this year" and I am glad as I was. Great addition to the Safety room but outside of that more of the same.

So how does this change our draft strategy? I still think the top needs are Edge, LBr, CB and Safety but I imagine the team is going to feel like they missed out on LBr and may try to force the issue in the 1st. I think they will feel somewhat covered at CB with Bland / Revel so more of an OLB rusher might be the other target.

If Style is n/a we will probably reach for someone like Allen at 20...just hopefully not 12.

Personally I would not let any of these moves alter the strategy and would still be looking BPA on defense.

Assuming no more major moves:

LB is the most glaring need, Edge and CB right behind. There's still room for a safety but seems less likely now from a need perspective. I think they want to play Kenny as more of a strong side end so I assume we'll see a NT somewhere as well.

The silver lining about everything being a need is that you can pick the BPA on defense in your first couple of picks I guess.

If no LB is there at 12, trade down, pick up a 2nd round pick, if not a little more.
Can still get a decent LB.

Edge and CB remain the biggest need but now DT is also significant.

No clue what they are trying to do at LB, but it is a significantly lesser need than those other three spots.

Keep thinking what Parker needs. The obvious is ILB and he has said as much. That who captains the D. Dean was there guy until he wasn't.
Then I look at the draft, and Hill is rated #1 then Rodriguez at #2 and then Trotter at # 3. None are sure fire 1st round guys and Rodriguez and Trotter are more 3rd round guys. Rodriguez is probably the most competent as that what he did at Texas Tech.

If Styles is by some miracle at 12 then you take him as he your answer at OLB/DE then trade 20 for say a team that want a 2nd or 3rd pick in 1st like Houston or the Jets as both have to vastly improve this year and the trade could net two 2nds. If so, then grab Chris Johnson CB and Jacob Rodriguez in the 2nd then either Harold Perkins OLB or Tacario Davis CB or Anthony Lucas DE or any guy Parker wants in 3rd.

I could live with that.

Really think we should have pushed harder in FA...I love Styles but he is my only 1st round LBr and dont love a rookie being the green dot player.

Gary is nice, but he is a buffer for a young pass rusher. He will be here two years max. Pass rusher is still at the top of the menu. They need to get a CB in the top 90 top. Right now it looks like they are locked into edge, LB and CB with their 3 top 90's. Not ideal at all. Hopefully they have a couple more starter level moves up there sleeve

Gary is basically Clowney + 15 million dollars.

An actual high end pass rusher remains top priority for me but I don't think we are getting a vet at this point which is unfortunate.

Eh he is better than Clowney. Clowney was good last year, but his numbers were juiced by a 3 sack game week 18. Clowney is a solid 3rd pass rusher, whereas Gary is a legit starter

Is he though?

Gary did not have a sack for the last 10 games of the season and when you watch his production most of it is a coverage sack or a stunt type scenario. Great run defender though.

Of course he is younger and I would rather have him but I just so not see it as a real upgrade or needle mover.

He is. Clowney is a good player, but he is more of a reserve at stage in his career. Gary had a rough stretch the last half of the season, but he has a long stretch of being an above average starter.

For a team in a 2/3 year window I dont see much difference in the short term.

Especially considering the cost and the team building factor.

Gary gives you more flexibility. You can either rush him standing up, or you can play him at a 5T or 6T on passing downs. They are still a rusher short, and even that is with expected growth from Ezeiruaku. But Gary gives you flexibility on how you attack the passer. Overall as a player, Id say he is a little below Phillips and Oweh. However he is someone that can really help us

Yea I think we just disagree on the talent level here.

Quality player? Sure. Is he worth the price tag and and is he a noticeable upgrade over what we got last year from Clowney? No for me.

He usually hovers around 50 pressures per year which is around what we got from our DTs last year.
