The holes in the team are fairly well known.
O line and Secondary.
Serious Weaknesses are also known.
Lack of pass rush from anyone not named Ware.
Now there are some good FA corners available; and clearly there will be Guards available. So we can fix most of the problems in those two areas.
Safety is another thing as there is not much out there.
Pass rush- depends on what we do with Spencer.
Personally I say let him go; he was supposed to replace Ellis but was never as good so good bye.
Now if we keep Spencer we still need to figure out how to get more of a pass rush. The top D's have at least 2 guys who can get the sacks; Giants right now have 3. We have one.
IF we keep Spencer then we have to look at the D line to get sacks. That would mean moving Rat to DE and hopefully he and Hatcher can bet more sacks.
Calais campbell is from all accounts the #1 target by Arizona to resign and he was the only guy we could get that would be a true pass rush threat from DE.
Mario Williams is an interesting case. There are differing reports about how badly the Texans want him back. The fact that their D did so well this year without him would seem to indicate they will not be desperate to retain him.
Now he would be expensive; and supposedly he does not want to play in the 3-4 at either DE or OLB. He wants to be a 4-3 DE. So with the likely cost and his supposed unwillingness to play the 3-4 he probably is only a dream; I happen to think he could be deadly in the 3-4 but that is just me.
A lot of this also seems to depend on how much Spencer wants; but from all accounts the Boys have made no motion to try and have talks with his agent; so the rumors about how beloved he is by the Staff might be hyperbole.
If he leaves then we have to replace him. Butler is a good pass rusher; probably better then Spencer. But I have heard he is very poor against the Run. So he might be only a situational guy.
I do not think there is anyone in FA that can be considered an upgrade to Spencer. If there is someone please mention him.
Anyway that is my summing up of the situation on D. we probably get a good if not great CB in FA and maybe resign Elam. What else happens there is really a mystery and sadly there is not a lot out there we can buy that will help beyond CBs.
Now as regards the O line.
Costa is not a quality Center. Killa MIGHT be. How the Boys evaluate that position is important; if they do not think either will do then either a FA or Draft choice will be brought in.
Arkin might be a quality guard. That is about it for reasonable expectations.
Seems therefore obvious that we have to get one guard at least in FA.
Keeping Romo healthy must be a priority. He cannot survive another season like this last one; I was amazed he did not end up on IR.
Switching Free and Smith seems a foregone conclusion and you really need to have a veteran Guard next to Smith. So the main guys in FA are Nicks and Grubs. Nicks will be expensive. But he is worth it. Grubbs is a good fall back if Nicks costs too much. I believe one or the other will be a Cowboy for 2012.
So I believe we will get at least one New Guard and One New CB in FA; and after that it is anyones guess. Resigning of Elam seems more likely to me now but that could change; if RR wants another guy we probably will go after him. so that would add a Safety to FA as well.
As regards the Draft it seems that the major holes will be plugged if possible in FA and what is left will be addressed in the draft.
