FA Re-do

Nice. Doesn't make up for your lack of informed opinion on the NFL, but nice anyway.

You can tell how well informed I am regarding the NFL by this thread?

Funny how someone who has posted four threads since 2004 can assert one's ability regarding opinion.

I would like to think I have firm grasp on logic as I was praised not more than a week ago by my critical thinking professor who is a very accomplished logcian.

Perhaps you should try applying it to your football posts... there is no logic in thinking that Mario Williams would have signed with the Cowboys rather than the Bills if the Boys were offering five million less... no logic whatsoever, in fact it flies in the face of basic human nature...

You are wrong about players playing for just money.

Uhhhh, no, I'm not...

Money might be priority #1 for some players but success has to factor in somewhere.

I've already addressed this, but one more time, just for you-- money is the primary motivating factor for about 99 per cent of the players in the league... they have a very limited time to make the big money, and they know it...

Oh sure, you have the odd player who has already made a ton of money, and is nearing the end of his career... at that point, if he doesn't already have a Super Bowl ring, that starts to become a consideration; of course all players WANT a ring or two... but if you haven't already provided for your future financial security, you're going to put money over the chance to win a Super Bowl ring...

Mario Williams is not some older player nearing the end of his career, he has time to get that ring... thus, I find it ridiculous to even suggest he would take five million dollars less to play for the Dallas Cowboys...

Hell, I love the Cowboys with a passion that my friends and family can't understand, and even *I* wouln't agree to play for them if some other team was offering me five million dollars more to play for them...

And if you say you would, sorry, but I'd have to question your honesty... five million dollars?? Are you kidding me??

Guys take pay cuts to allow their team to spend in FA.

Generally, those aren't "pay cuts" at all... the teams convert one kind of bonus into another kind of bonus (or sometimes, base salary), so as to minimize the hit under the cap, but the player's making the same money at the end of the day...

On those rare occasions where a player truly does agree to take a pay cut to help the team sign free agents, it is always an older player who is still gonna make a crapload of money... so we're back to that older guy looking for a ring before he retires, having already made good money playing in the NFL...

And sometimes, that player agrees to take a cut as an alternative to being released...

I have a feeling Crawford could push for a starting job also.

I don't think it really matters who the nominal starters will be on the DL, I look for a rotation that involves Crawford, Spears, Hatcher, Lissemore, Ratliff and Brent... others who might claim a spot in the rotation include Callaway and Geathers, perhaps even Coleman... their play in preseason will determine that...

I have to say, I kinda like that six man rotation... anyway, the point is, whether he starts or not, I feel confident that Crawford will see plenty of playing time...

I don't consider you uniformed, for the record...

However, I do find you comically naive about what motivates professional football players to sign with one team over another...

I can honestly say I would take 5 million less to play for the Cowboys.

I was told I wasn't good enough to play and I believed it. I believed it so much that when my mother said she couldn't afford to pay for a high school football program even with assistance, I let it go. When I graduated I said I didn't want to look back on life and say I didn't try.

I attend a community college and work my tail off to pay for it. I don't get financial aid or any help from family. I work out as often as I can because I want to transfer to UNLV to play football.

I want to be a Dallas Cowboy. You know what my chances are? I don't. I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery twice in the same day. I don't care. It chokes me up and brings me to the verge of tears knowing I might never do it. I NEED to try though, it's in my soul. Point and laugh at me but don't tell me it's about the money. I come from a family that has none and I would play for the Cowboys for minimum wage. That is God's honest truth.

If you say so... I still think if the Boys offered you a minimum wage contract, and the Bills offered you 5 million more, you'd change your tune in a hurry...

That is not to say I don't believe your love for the Cowboys, or your desire to play for them... I'm just saying that when faced with that choice, you'd take care of your family, the way any man would...

Again, we're back to your being incredibly naive, but now that I've got a guesstimate as to how old you are, I kind of understand... but seriously, ask yourself if you'd pass up the chance to buy your Mom a house, see to it that she never had to work again... you could do that with that 5 mil, you can't do that on minimum wage...

I'd like to think, and I purely hope, that your love of your family would outweigh your love of the Dallas Cowboys... if it wouldn't, you need to work on your priorities, young man... :D

You don't know my mother. As far as the rest of my family, yes, I would like to financially provide for them. Would they work to give me my dream, I know it. Everybody has their dream, you can't put a price on that. I would pay a million to make the final 53.

You better believe I would put that minimum wage to good use though. I would invest and probably get endorsements for being the first NFL player on minimum wage.:D

A regular Joe football player, the media would eat that up.

Man, these young whippersnappers!

IMO, we made the right moves in Free Agency based on our needs. Sure, I wanted to see Nicks wear the star, but if I had to have either him or Carr, I choose Carr all day long. Carr plays a premium position and there were only two guys legitimately available that play at a high level. Nicks was amongst the best OL available, but interior OL is a lot easier to find in the grand scheme of things. Cornerback is way more difficult to find a player that won't get burned. Also, the CB is more on an island where OG has the rest of the OL around him and also a RB if he gets beat (sure, the CB has a safety as well).

I think that having the free agency period prior to the draft certainly helped the Cowboys this year. They plugged many holes and allowed JJ to surrender a 2nd round pick to move up and get a stud CB (again, difficult position to find a stud). Then, they went out and got high-motor guys with upside...all-in-all, I believe that the Cowboys did wondrous things to improve this team so far this off-season, especially if the draftees step up...

I like free agency before the draft. You fill needs in free agency and go into the draft not reaching for players or overvaluing guys just because you don't know how your free agency will turn out

I understand.
The FO didn't rate that a huge need as many here do.
Metrics suggest our OL woes are vastly overstated.
Romo was sacked about an average number of times and we ran the ball for a fairly high yards per attempt average.

I'd say let's get to camp and see how these young ol look before going all risen star. It is far away from week 1 and there really is no need to panic.

I don't think this is said enough, cause for how many people say how awful our OL was last year and how we only had 5 rushing TDs, we still averaged 4.4 ypc, good enough for #9 in the league. Our sacks were middle of the pack at #14, not good, not horrible either.

Sure, in rushing attempts we were #24 in the league, but thats not the OL's fault. Not to mention the Superbowl Champs only attempted 3 more rushes for the season than we did.

No question they can and should be better, but with the additions of 2 FAs and several youngsters still in there developing, the need is well overstated on this board.

Even more we added one of the most coveted OL coaches around; added a top flight FB in Vickers and brought in two very dependable interior OL.

I don't think that area is as scary as portrayed at all.

Center is a legit watch and see concern but every team in football has those areas under the salary cap. No team puts 53 trusted, quality NFL players on the roster.

Great players who go to different teams rarely work out. Sometimes it just takes a change of scenery for a player to reach their potential.

Only one i can think of is Cris Carter from the Eagles to the Vikings.

Reggie White. Jimmy Smith et al.

There are tons of examples of just about everything.
Odds are better of hitting on mid-tier talent than hitting on rw11 though to be sure.

High expectations is a killer and only truly exceptional players rock regardless of team and scheme.
