Callahan also recruited and coached Slauson at Nebraska.

Great. I'm really, really hoping we sign Slauson and pass on Warmack or Cooper.

No more D-Line on our film room door. We are now Rushmen. #WellLetsGetItThen pic.twitter.com/N4cnt3irMr
Could this mean we'll finally have a pass rush again?

They don't have a crystal ball on who will be available so filling holes with cheap veterans at least allows you to not reach if your pet cat isn't there. They are also possibly interested in Ronde Barber at FS. Same deal. Would you rather they be forced to add Derrick Dockery again if things don't go well?

You mean like signing Bernadeau and Livings and totally ignoring the OL in the draft last year?

The Cowboys have had "conversations" with free agent OG Matt Slauson.
Cowboys OC Bill Callahan was Slauson's position coach for three years with the Jets. Slauson has generated scant interest elsewhere since free agency began.

Getting Slauson and re-signing Sims would be a quiet but well played offseason going into the Draft.

Choosing a pet cat is just asking to be upset. I would be satisfied with an OL or 2 in the first 100 picks.

The Cowboys would like to get a deal done with Romo and/or Spencer so they can make some small moves in free agency to cover thin areas

As we noted this AM w @NewSchoolSS & @rjchoppy ASpencer did NOT engage in #Cowboys talks last week but @JordanWoy plans to this week

Talks with Anthony Spencer about possibility of extension have not yet begun, according to Jones

Calvin Watkins ‏@calvinwatkins
Cowboys don't seem to be in a rush to make a Spencer deal at this time. But things can change quickly.

Clarence Hill ‏@clarencehilljr
Stephen jones said getting a deal with romo is more important than getting a deal with spencer. Romo is the bigger priority

Clarence Hill ‏@clarencehilljr
Anthony Spencer's agent jordan Woy says he will talk to cowboys about a long term deal this week. The cowboys dont feel urgency to do deal

From this, can we assume the Cowboys are seeing the bottom fall out of the DE market and they're now wanting to wait to see how far it drops before negotiating w/ Spencer? Conversely, is Spencer (and his agent) now wanting to come to the table to get what he can via a long term deal vs a single big year under the Tag?

IIRC, I thought their stance had been that they were prioritizing completing Spencer's deal over that of Romo's, according to another tweet.

Stephen Jones says he is confident a Tony Romo extension gets done just doesn't know when. Player and team disagree on value currently

It's probably they pass on drafting an offensive lineman anyway. I'd rather have Slauson added than nothing.

Slauson, Huff/Barber, Robinson, along with Sims, would be a decent, cheap class of free agents to augment the team.

Don't know if Blackburn is out of consideration since we re-signed Sims.

Slauson is known for his versatility and played a variety of positions for the Jets and Cornhuskers under Callahan. What he would provide is for the Cowboys to not get focused on one pet cat or reach for a need and pass over a higher rated player at another position if he falls in their lap. Most of the Cowboys biggest draft busts have been when they went into the draft with the "Gotta draft (fill in need here) position no matter what in the first round" mindset. See Shante Carver and David LeFleur.

We need to address guard. If we go about drafting one and hoping to sign some stop gap safety or pass rusher that is the WRONG route. Sign a seasoned veteran guard to solidify the line and expedite waiting for a guard to develop (which to me seems like the longest process in player development) and draft some freak SEC pass rusher or safety (Matt Elam) to let their physical ability do the talking

I like this train of thought right here. I think you roll the dice on a solid vet like that and get a stud safety and boy I would love to get Matt Elam I think he is going to be a very very good player for years to come.

I read Slauson was so deficient last year in terms of run-blocking that it got the point they decided to rotate him with Vladimir Ducasse.

Elam apparently didn't look very athletic at his pro-day. The reports are the other FLA safety looked a lot smoother than he did. I like him and wouldn't be opposed to us drafting him, but he doesn't wrap up when he tackles which is not going to be pretty in the NFL.

Whatever, I like Elam personally but my main point is we need an athletic safety to fill a spot because putting all our eggs in the Matt Johnson basket certainly is a dangerous move. Plus I like that we're keeping Moore who can get in quality snaps at safety or an inside corner position

Elam's strength is in the box at SS, I think he would be a poor fit at FS where Johnson is playing. Vacarro, Cyprien, Thomas, Swearinger, Rambo those are more the FS types for Kiffin's defense.
