What if a player calls for a fair catch, but the ball hits him and pops into the air......is the defense allowed to hit him once the ball pops up?

If the returner bobbles the ball, he has the right to regain control of the ball as long as the ball doesn't hit the ground. If he is hit before that, it will be a penalty.

Interesting....what if he bobbles it in such a way that it's available for a member of the opposing team to snatch it out of the air without making contact with the punt returner? I know it's unlikely but what if?

LOL not positive but that would still not be legal. The ball would be awarded to the receiving team.

As it stands now, if a player calls for a fair catch, the ball is his unless it hits the ground or another player from his own team. The ball is down if it touches a player from the kicking team before it touches a player from the receiving team.

If the player who called for the fair catch touches it first, then it touches a player from the kicking team without hitting the ground, the kicking team used to get an interference penalty for it because the ball belongs to the player who called fair catch until it hits the ground or a player from his own team. I think they changed this rule though so the ball is ruled dead when this happens now without the penalty.

The kicking team may not interfere with the returners path to the ball and may not touch it until it hits the ground
