Fans of Universities you did not graduate from

Technically if you live in the state, your tax dollars fund the University if public and it represents your state.

But I do think it's weird when people just pick a random team with no connection at all pro or college. I went to a school without a football program and I always preferred pro over college anyway, I grew up a few blocks from TCU so I like that they are better I guess.

I guess the thing that gets on my nerves is the people who support LSU or UT just because they think that being from the state gives them association to them. In reality, they root for the winner and I hate bandwagon fans.

well the Constitution says you are entitled to your opinion, no matter how high on that soap box you preach it from.

I never went to Texas. I have been a Longhorn fan since I was a small child. I have bought merchandise from there. I have attended a few games. I have watched and followed the football program since I was a child. I still remember watching Roger Clemens pitch for them. I didn't start watching the basketball program until the Tom Penders years, basically because they were never on TV. So during the 80s, my college basketball team was Syracuse.

BTW, I graduated from TAMU-CC. The only time I root against the Longhorns is when they play TAMU-CC. Of course, Texas always wins.

Texas is my favorite college football team. Eric Metcalf is my favorite college football player of all-time. BTW, Tom Landry went to Texas.

Another anomaly... and a reason you can root for who you want...

Terry Metcalf was a thorn in our side with the Cards... Eric hated the Cowboys even though he was from Texas...

I like UCLA as well... so shoot me...

How do you feel about this?

Personally, I don't think people should be fans of schools that they did not go to. At the very least, that their parents didn't go to. Pro sports is a little different because you can't really have a connection to a pro team, except for geography. I am just big on loyalty and I am a Cowboys fan because I am from the area and a LTU fan because I went there. What say you?

Are you from Louisiana? Therefore you shouldn't be a fan of the Cowboys..... It IS the same thing really. The Cowboys are a Texas team after all. I am a Longhorn fan but I went to SFA. I live in Austin now though. I'm not a bandwagon fan either so that's not a good argument.

I agree... given that logic... but...

Shreveport/Bossier/Minden/Ruston are all solid Cowboys fans... they want the Saints to do well but they identify with the Cowboys...

I was born in Texas but grew up in this area... DEDICATED Cowboy fans...

I'm not saying you shouldn't....I really don't care. I was just breaking it down that the argument could be made and is basically the same as rooting for a college team you didn't go to. The college thing is so weird anyway when it comes to fans. Like Oklahoma....fans are pro Oklahoma....anti Texas....yet half their team consists of players from Texas. So basically you're rooting for a Texas team if you think about it. If you can't root for a team you don't have ties to....then college teams shouldn't be allowed to have players that aren't even from the state the college team is in :)

Hate to tell u but i doubt there are any bandwagoners on this site.

Try Greenbay, NY(both), Saints, Patriots, etc....

I was brought up a ND fan by my father so I consider that somewhat legit.

Went to Iowa and root for them as long as they do not play ND.

Became a Cowboy fan as I watched the last part of SB V and just hated the Colts. Something about them really made me mad and I just became a Boys fan. Then the next year I really watched more NFL and once Roger became the starter I was hooked for life. Got to learn a lot about that team as I watched all the pre game stuff as much as I could that year. Then of course the SB pre game that year really focused a lot on Roger and from that moment on he was and always will be the #1 Cowboy to me.

When an OU bandwagon fan who never went to OU talks about how much they love OU, I always like to ask them how much fun they had in the student section at games.

Ok, so people who go to a private college well known for their academics but without a division 1 program can't have a favorite team? You know how many people across the country you are claiming should not be able to root for a college team?? come on

If you never served in office... you can't like one candidate over another...
If you've never been a cattle rancher, you can't like steak... (I'm a HUGE fan of steak and have never owned cattle)...
If you've never been a baker, you can't like cake...
If you're not Mexican, Mexican food can't be your favorite...

It's really a ridiculous argument... in a country founded on freedom of likes and dislikes. No one holds an exclusive right to root for any team. I have just as much of a right to root for Texas as Vince Young... maybe more as I am a taxpayer funding that school and he isn't... ;)

The OP is likely venting frustration on bandwagon fans... they annoy me too... but they have every right to be annoying bandwagon fans...

As long as your favorite is the school you are an alum of and your secondary schools aren't in direct confict with your favorite schools.

I am actually in issue now that TCU is in the Big 12 since my second school is Texas. That said, I can justify it by saying that I'm a Texas school fan except for Texas A&M due to their low class exit from the Big 12. Topping that off with the fact that Texas A&M went to the SEC and the SEC is the ONLY completely REDNECK conference. :)

:lmao2:

My dad was a UT fan before i went there, he never went to that school, but he worked at UT, i think if you work for a school you can cheer for them as well if you have the same view as the OP

i, however, think its ok for people that didnt go to that school to cheer for them, but i think they have to be from or live in the city or area that the school is located. Or at the very least, the state

Except for ND. Any Catholic can root for ND.

As an alumnus of the University of Texas I have no problem with people being fans. Buy more gear, attend games and please talk us up, especially to great high school talent. The only thing I find weird is when someone went to a Div I school with a team in a major conference and they cheer for another. Otherwise I have no problem, and think it makes things even bigger and better. Take some pride in it like you would with your NFL team. What I don't like are the fair weathers that just jump on who is hot that year.
