Using the Seahawks as a guide, try to fix the front 7. We will assume Sean Lee and DeMarcus Ware are coming back, even though many think Ware will be a cap casualty. That leaves 5 spots. You can pick one Free Agent (new or returning), up to 2 draft picks, and the rest must be returning players (Bruce Carter, Tyrone Crawford, etc.) to fix the Front 7. As always, try to be realistic.

They don't play that all the time. They play their tackles in multiple one and two gap techniques using multiple fronts.

I'm doing too many things at once and I'm not coming across very well.

Yes, they will shoot and shoot and hold as well as play a hole and play two gap control. They have a very good DL and get to show a lot of fronts.

Not all of the time. They have rotated Avril and Chris Clemons to the spot.

They will play that maybe 4 or 5 plays a game. Between them both. And they use that when they want a serious rush or need a big play big stop. But 90%+ of the time Irvin is out there.

Irvin got a grand total of 17 snaps in the Super Bowl. That is a strange way to use a player you normally have out there "90%" of the time.

Don't really know why we can only use 3 draft picks, because I think we'll come out with a 1-tech, a 3-tech and a DE, and the 1-Tech will play a role like Red Bryant for the Seahawks. Anyway:

Cowboys sign Henry Melton, DT Chicago Bears.

Cowboys draft Aaron Donald, DT Pittsburgh in the 1st, and Demarcus Lawrence, DE Boise State in the 3rd.

So:
Leo: DeMarcus Ware
1-Tech: Henry Melton
3-Tech: Aaron Donald
5-Tech: Tyrone Crawford
Sam: Demarcus Lawrence
Mike: Sean Lee
Will: Bruce Carter

Good thread idea. As long as smart people post, it should spark some interesting discussion.

Melton is probably a better fit as a 3-technique. That is what he was playing in Chicago.

Crawford moves to LDE
Draft Will Sutton in the 3rd to play 1 Tech
Draft Aaron Donald in the 1st to play 3 Tech
Restructure and keep Ware.

Bruce Carter at Will
Sean Lee at Mike
Draft Jeremiah Attaochu in the 2nd as the Sam.

Love both players but think Sutton slims down 10 to 15 and is almost the same player as Donald, a true 3.

I hate when we like the same players ( Attaochu, Donald, Sutton). Makes me question the player.

I prefer Hageman to anyone in the Draft for our needs at DT, but think we're going to go hard for Donald because he is a Sapp clone.

I'd love to land Kahlil Mack in the 1st. I'd take Kony Ealy in a heartbeat.

Even if we take 2 DTs early I'd still try and grab Reid from Princeton, Martin from UNC, and/or Bromley from Syracuse in the 4th, 5th, and 7th rounds if any of them are there.

I'd let Wilber, Holloman, Attaochu, and Carter fight for the 2 outside spots. Best 2 win.

I could get behind this plan wholeheartedly. But I doubt we have the firm conviction to resist the temptation to not take a skill player in the first three rounds.

We are far more prone to taking the DL in the first and then start wandering aimlessly about for the next two rounds.

Maybe because Denver runs 3 and 4 wide? and the Leo usually comes off the field in nickle and dime? Just maybe?

I've wanted a 1 tech for a long time but I'm satisfied with a true 1 to play 10-20 snaps a game at most. I'd rather have someone who can play a 1 or a 3. I'd use a prototypical 1 2gap guy less. If you can get a DT who can do it all you are golden.

Not with the injuries last year and 2 of our key pieces gone in Spencer and Hatcher. We're going to go D Heavy.

Irvin played 23 snaps against San Francisco. Maybe, just maybe, he is not as big a part of their defense as you think he is.

If you say so. I thought for sure we would go OL heavy after deciding Colombo and Davis needed to go and amazingly, we did not.

I learned long ago not to try to apply common sense to how we draft players.
