Moderator Note: This is a Father's Day thread, an appreciative reflection of a parent. Have a wonderful holiday, everyone.
Many of you have heard me tell this story before, so I will keep it short. On the eve of Father’s Day, I want to say thank you to my Dad for making me a Cowboys fan.
On Oct. 18, 1964, my Dad took me to my first Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl, and nearly 54 years later, I remember it like yesterday. We played the Cleveland Browns, who back in those days were a great team. They had the great Jim Brown at RB, and the Browns beat the Cowboys that day 20-16. I still remember the deep green grass of the Cotton Bowl, and how much I loved the silver helmets and pants of the Cowboys. I was hooked for life. My dad took my brother and I to a Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl and Texas Stadium almost every year until Jerry and the NFL priced us out.
I know many of you great Cowboys fans out there can thank your Dads too for many things. My Dad is still with us at 84, still my hero and still my role model. And he’s still a Cowboys fan. Each season I hold hope that I get one last chance to watch a Super Bowl with the Cowboys in it with my Dad. He has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so the clock is ticking. This season may be the last he remembers.
If your Dad is till alive, tell him what he means to you. Or if your Dad has passed on, thank the man upstairs for all the good your old man gave you.
Happy Father’s Day to all Cowboys fans.
