Many of you have heard me tell this story before, so I will keep it short. On the eve of Father’s Day, I want to say thank you to my Dad for making me a Cowboys fan.

On Oct. 18, 1964, my Dad took me to my first Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl, and nearly 54 years later, I remember it like yesterday. We played the Cleveland Browns, who back in those days were a great team. They had the great Jim Brown at RB, and the Browns beat the Cowboys that day 20-16. I still remember the deep green grass of the Cotton Bowl, and how much I loved the silver helmets and pants of the Cowboys. I was hooked for life. My dad took my brother and I to a Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl and Texas Stadium almost every year until Jerry and the NFL priced us out.

I know many of you great Cowboys fans out there can thank your Dads too for many things. My Dad is still with us at 84, still my hero and still my role model. And he’s still a Cowboys fan. Each season I hold hope that I get one last chance to watch a Super Bowl with the Cowboys in it with my Dad. He has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so the clock is ticking. This season may be the last he remembers.

If your Dad is till alive, tell him what he means to you. Or if your Dad has passed on, thank the man upstairs for all the good your old man gave you.

Happy Father’s Day to all Cowboys fans.

I was already a Cowboys fan thanks to my father before he took me to my first game. It's a relationship that's only second to the one that I've had with him. Happy Father's Day pop love and miss you.

Happy Father's day to all the fathers here at the Zone:)

My Dad bet his whole paycheck on a Cowboys game against the Commanders in the early 70's. My family could not afford the outcome to be bad and it was not. So, here I am 41 years later still a cowboys fan. Thanks Dad!! He turned 76 May 29th.

Nice share and God bless...

Awesome story. Mine is similar, and not I saw my first game in ‘65 against the NYG. I I’ve been without my dad for 25 years, and not a day goes by that I don’t think of him. He spent the last six months of his life in the hospital, and I was there with him at least a part of every single day during that time. Cherish the time you have left with him.

The Cotton Bowl was a great stadium still is in my opinion and my Dad took me there in 1960 to the 1st game the Cowboys played there. Dad played High-school football on the same team with Forrest Gregg and was proud of it and yes he made me a Cowboys fan he passed away 1 week before I graduated High-school in 1973 wish we went to more games togather

I remember my first encounter with football. I was a young lad, and was passing by this freshly cut grass field with several young lads out kicking, passing and punting a ball. I was a rather large strapping youngster. I ask the other smaller kids what was going on. They said it was a "punt, pass and kick" competition. I had never heard of the this event. I ask how a young lad like myself could enter. They signed me up and I won the blue ribbon that day. I was in heaven and so happy with my new blue ribbon. I got home and showed my papa this beautiful blue ribbon. He smacked me up beside my head with some bacon grease and told me to put that sissy ribbon in my barbie's collection box. Ever since that day I have enjoyed watching this beautiful game. I remember back fondly of that smell of that bacon grease dripping into my eyes. It still puts a tear in my eyes remember that joyous day.

Bacon thanks Dad. that was almost 53 years ago.

When I was a kid, my Dad and I used to get out of church with Mom by going fishing on Fathers Day. He passed a year ago but I still tell him often. Good post Mr Hayes

My father passed on April 30, 1999. He was a rock, a moral standard, and a devoted spouse and parent. My father was three times the man I am. He was all the good qualities within me (props to you too mother :p ) and not one negative aspect of my personality. I miss him and always will.

A loving father is a SPECIAL thing. Happy Father's Day CowboysZone.

Fabulous thread.
My Dad wasn't a huge Cowboys fan but I do remember him commenting on how he admired Roger Staubach and Tom Landry because they were such classy guys. Dad passed away 14 years ago, my fondest memories of him are seeing him in the stands at my high school & little league games.
