Favorite non Cowboys...

I would have to say it is Favre. He has always been an icon in the NFL. He is the last of the true quarterbacks in my opinion. Like someone mentioned before. He earned his right to be paid a lot of money, not just given a lot of money because he has potintual

LT is ladanian Tomlinson, Not Lawrence Taylor. For me anyways. Tomlinsons easy to root for, and easily the best back in the game right now.

Not gonna make a long list as I don't have alot of time today.

I like these guys in no particular order (tho #1 would stay the same):

Culpepper
Steve McNair
Rodney Harrison (I like big hitters)
Andre Johnson
The Priest (He's a good story)
Roy W (Det)
Chris McAllister
Torry Holt
John Lynch (before his skills fell off)
Derrick Brooks
Jonathan Vilma (just like the young guy)
Randy Moss (somebody had to say it)

I'm sure I could name some more, but that's it.

Edit: I like the premier OTs. Anybody who can keep their QB off the ground is alright w/me. Don't know Payton's and Brady's, but they definitely on my list.

Ogden, Pace, Jones, and you guys are welcome to add who else.

Non Cowboy players I like from respect of their ability.

1. JOE Montana ( the guy made it look easy)
2. John Elway ( living proof that if you keep going eventually you win)
3. LT ( Could cover the whole field in TECMO Bowl)
4. Mark Clayton ( played bigger than his size)
5. Derrick Thomas ( was a terror)
6. Darrell Green ( Fastest Man but Texas product)
7. Super Bowl Shuffle Video ( Da Bears) McMahon

Tony D

Earl Campbell

Dan Fouts

Kellen Winslow Sr

Daryl Green (yes I know he is a skin but I repsected his class and ability when he played)

Ronnie Lott

Barry Sanders - ability only

Walter Payton

Dan Marino

John Elway

Anthony Munoz

Lawrence Taylor - ability only

Ozzie Smith - Maybe even more in his current job.

Terrell Davis

I could go on and on.

Dexter Coakley
Tony Gonzalez
LaDainian Tomlinson
Ahman Green
Drew Brees
David Givens
Warrick Dunn
Keith Bulluck

What, Favre has to somehow control what the announcers say? If you don't like announcers oozing praise on guys then you must really hate watching the MNF crew give Larry Allen so much love.

I dont like Favre, he gets talked about so mcuh no matter what the situaiton is. Even when GB's on defense hes getting credit for stuff

"Only Favre, could of made that play"

Also when he was about to dive for a first down but saw a defender comign his way so he jsut flipped the ball to his WR, even tho he was like 8 yards past the line of scrimmage, and all the announcers said something like "Favre is jsut having fun out there, thats so funny" He was afraid to take a hit for his team to maybe get a first down, so he bailed out on his team, but even when he makes a sissy play he gets credit, that bothered me.

Uhh, Warrick Dunn's not your favorite tailback?

That's some sides of beef there.........wasn't the 'Nigerian Nightmare' something:)

Rocky Blier...But I hated those Steelers teams.

That's an interesting list, Juke. Love it because we share some of the same football memories.

I loved Namath, and I think Marino's release rivaled it....used to battle with Phins fans over that one..they refuse to believe anyone was ever in Dan's passing class. I've only seen two QBs in my lifetime that I consider "great" (Marino and Montana, and neither is anything close to my favorite, favorite doesn't always have to be 'best', just what thrills you the most), but Namath had, in the days QBs called their own plays, a mastery of the passing game that is amazing by today's standards. He was also, despite the ravaged knees, surprisngly mobile in the pocket. Fouts was another one I liked a lot.

A few days after mentioning Bambi here a few weeks back, I was surprised to hear Tuna bring him up in a pc as an example of an inexplicable success. According to Bill, Alworth did 'everything wrong', including catching the ball against his chest. But he still just raced by everybody to the endszone. I don't remember what he did 'wrong', just how as a kid I delighted in watching him do it. I appreciate the big physical receivers from Taylor to Irvin to AJ too, but my receiver 'seal' was stamped by Alworth as child, and that is the type I have always preferred, just as Fran's scrambling marked mobility for me as an exciting QB characteristic I still want to see.

Nance was certainly BIG, and this is a non-Cowboys thread, but Earl Campbell's thunder thighs epitomized the power running back to me. I remember Nance as being in the Larry Csonka mold, tho not quite as talented. The bigger runner I loved back then was Franco Harris.

I cheated by putting Duane Thomas on my list, but had to. He captured my running back imagination at an early age, just as Alworth and Fran did at their positions. I know OJ was faster on field, and Sanders was more than marginally the BEST, but DT was as (I think it was Chief's father said) like water rushing downstream over the river rocks. That was the best imagery I ever read on how he appeared on the field.

No one looks quite the same today, and I wonder if it's just that children watch the game with no technical understanding, but far more aesthetic appreciation. We adults get the science, but young eyes capture the art. I wish I could watch football again and just see the beauty and wonder again...now it's all tainted with stats and obscured with dissatisfaction. Eyes move to missed blocks and the mind to disappointment. So many high light reels defuse the senses.

Well, that's why they call it "nostalgia" , I guess. ;)

People lose sight of how good Namath was because, youngin's only look at the numbers...and his stats are not impressive...but what's lost is that he threw every pass 30 yard downfield...heck, his TE's averaged 19 yard per catch.

In fact, the entire plan in the SuperBowl was built around getting the ball deep to Maynard once, (even though he could hardly run because of a hamstring injury) and then throwing underneath the deep zones all day long because they knew the Colts saw Namath as a bomber.

And you're right, he had quick feet in the pocket...and set up in a flash, regardless of 3-5-7 step drops.

Alworth was a fav of mine as a kid...still is...

And I agree....I think part of the magic was that we didn't see these guys...they weren't over-exposed...like today. In fact, there'd be "This week in the NFL" and that was about the only time.

I have some old Cowboy games with Duane Thomas at RB...the guy was a physical freak...I am convinced that Jim Brown ruined the kid out of jealousy.

RB - Earl Campbell
RB - Walter Payton
WR - Paul Warfield
FL - Lance Alworth
TE - Kellen Winslow
OT - Anthony Munoz
OT - Jim Parker
OG - Art Shell
OG - John Hannah
C - Jeff Van Note

DT - Merlin Olsen
DT - Howie Long

MLB - Mike Singletary
OLB - Ted Hendricks
OLB - Mike Curtis
CB - Mike Haynes
CB - Dick "Night Train" Lane
SS - Steve Atwater

There were a lot of guys I didn't like (nothing to do with their ability, I just didn't like them):

Deion Sanders, Dick Butkus, Bart Starr, Bob Greise, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Theisemann, ... I could go on and on and end up with a list almost as long as the first one.
